The sun rose soft and golden the next morning, spilling warmth into the apartment through the half-open curtains. Ren woke first, blinking sleep from his eyes as he realized—slowly, then all at once—that this wasn't just another morning.
There was a third heartbeat in the apartment.
He turned his head and saw Kai already awake beside him, sitting up with one knee bent, scrolling through his phone while pretending not to watch Hiro's open bedroom door every five seconds.
Ren stretched. "You're staring again."
Kai set his phone down. "I'm not staring."
"You absolutely are." Ren nudged him lightly. "You're worried."
Kai didn't deny it this time. "It's our first full day with him. I want it to go well."His voice lowered. "I want him to be happy."
Ren's heart melted at the seriousness in his tone. "He is happy. He slept through the whole night without waking."
Kai nodded, but the crease between his brows didn't leave. He only relaxed when tiny footsteps pattered down the hallway.
Hiro stood in the doorway in dinosaur pajamas far too big for him, eyes squinting from the morning light.
Ren sat up immediately. "Good morning, baby."
Hiro toddled to the bed and climbed up clumsily, crawling straight into Ren's arms first, then tugging Kai's sleeve until Kai shifted closer too.
Hiro whispered, "Good morning… Papa and Daddy."
Ren froze, heart exploding.Kai's breath actually caught.
Ren recovered first. "Which one of us is Papa?"
Hiro pointed at Kai without hesitation. "You. Because you're big."
Ren laughed. "And Daddy?"
Hiro poked Ren's cheek. "You. Because you're soft."
Kai smirked immediately. "He's not wrong."
Ren slapped Kai's arm while Hiro giggled between them, the morning already warm with love.
They decided on the beach because Kai said Hiro deserved "sunshine memories" and Ren said Kai deserved "to touch grass for once."
They packed towels, a tiny bucket and shovel, sunscreen, snacks, Hiro's favorite dinosaur, and enough bottled water to hydrate a small army. Kai tried to carry everything himself until Ren threatened to call him a show-off in public.
When they arrived at the beach, the wind was cool and salty, waves rolling in gentle folds. Families dotted the sand, children laughing, seagulls darting overhead. It was perfect.
Hiro clung to Ren's hand at first, eyes wide as he looked at the ocean stretching endlessly.
Ren knelt beside him. "You okay?"
Hiro nodded slowly. "It's big…"
Kai came up behind them, placing a reassuring hand on Hiro's little shoulder. "It can't hurt you as long as we're here."
Hiro looked between them, hesitating.
Then he whispered, "Can I touch it?"
Ren grinned. "Let's go."
They walked to where the water kissed the sand. Hiro held both their hands tightly until the first wave washed over his feet.
He squeaked. Then giggled. Then squealed with absolute, pure delight.
"It's cold!" he shouted, kicking the water. "Cold cold cold!"
Ren burst out laughing at his tiny dance. Kai's smirk stretched into a full smile—the rare one that Ren always found unfairly gorgeous.
Soon Hiro was splashing them both, making wild kicking motions at the waves. Ren splashed back gently, and Hiro shrieked in joy, running in circles around them.
Kai stood ankle-deep, watching them with the kind of quiet joy Ren wasn't used to seeing on his face.A soft, warm expression.Gentle.Completely in love.
Ren walked over to him, brushing their shoulders together. "You're staring again."
Kai didn't deny it. "I can't help it."
Ren followed his gaze—Hiro crouched in the sand, shoveling water into his little bucket with serious focus, tongue poking out of his mouth.
Ren leaned into Kai. "He fits us perfectly."
"Yes," Kai murmured. "He does."
Later, they helped Hiro build a sandcastle—though Hiro mostly destroyed towers as soon as Ren built them, laughing as the sand collapsed. Kai pretended to be offended every time, placing a hand dramatically over his chest.
"You keep ruining my architectural masterpieces."
Hiro giggled, smacking the mound of sand again. "Boom!"
Ren snorted. "He's just like you."
Kai raised an eyebrow. "How is that like me?"
"You destroy your own schedule every time you see me in the office."
Kai actually blushed—which Ren immediately committed to memory.
They tried flying a kite next, but the wind caught it too strongly and almost yanked Kai's arm. Ren shouted, laughing, "Kai! You're fighting the sky!"
Hiro cackled so hard he fell backward into the sand.
They ate snacks sitting under their umbrella—strawberries, little sandwiches, juice boxes. Hiro sat between them, leaning his head against Ren's arm while his feet rested on Kai's thigh.
At one point, Hiro looked at the ocean thoughtfully and whispered, "This is my best day ever."
Kai's eyes softened so much Ren felt dizzy.
Ren kissed the top of Hiro's head. "Ours too."
By the time they got home, Hiro was exhausted—sun-tired and sandy, holding his tiny dinosaur plush against his chest. They carried him inside, and he perked up just enough to take a warm bath, splashing so much water Ren had to put down towels everywhere.
After bath time, Ren wrapped him in a fluffy towel, drying his hair gently. Kai sat behind them on the floor, watching with soft eyes.
Hiro leaned back against Kai's chest, still sleepy, fingers playing with the edge of the towel.
Then he blinked up at them and said, completely innocent:
"Papa? Daddy?"
Both hummed in response.
Hiro looked genuinely confused. "Um… who's my mommy?"
Ren froze.
Kai froze even harder.
For three full seconds, silence filled the bathroom.
Ren pressed his lips together so he wouldn't burst out laughing. Kai's shoulders shook from the effort of holding in his own laughter.
Ren cleared his throat. "Well… you see…"
Kai raised a hand sharply like please don't let him answer this, so Ren clamped his mouth shut.
Hiro blinked. "Why are there two boys? Where's the mommy?"
Kai inhaled slowly, smoothing Hiro's damp hair. "Some families," he began with CEO-level calm, "have a mommy. Some have a daddy and a mommy. And some…" He glanced at Ren helplessly. "…have two daddies."
Hiro frowned hard, clearly unsatisfied. "But… but how do you be a family with no mommy?"
Ren bit his lip so hard he almost tasted blood, trying not to laugh.
Kai continued, "Well, we're both boys. But we love each other very much. And we love you. That makes us a family."
Hiro blinked, thinking deeply.
Then:
"So… Papa is the boy-mommy?"
Ren lost it.
He dropped onto the bathroom floor, laughing so hard he had to hold his stomach. Kai stared at him in betrayal while Ren wheezed, tears forming in his eyes.
Kai muttered, "Ren. Stop laughing. You're not helping."
Ren choked out between hysterical breaths, "B-boy mommy—Kai he—he called you—"
Kai glared. "Ren."
Ren collapsed again.
Meanwhile Hiro just looked at both of them like why are my parents broken?
He tugged Kai's sleeve. "Papa? Are you the mommy?"
Kai sighed, lifting Hiro into his lap. "No. I'm… I'm Papa."
Hiro pointed at Ren. "So Daddy is the mommy?"
Ren fell over again, hands slapping the tiles.
Kai covered his face. "No. No one is the mommy."
"But I need a mommy," Hiro said seriously. "Who makes the rules? Who tells you both 'no'?"
Ren was dying. He was actually dying.
Kai glanced at Ren. "Apparently he thinks that's my job."
Ren gasped through giggles, "Because you're scary enough."
"I am not scary," Kai protested.
Hiro hugged Kai's neck. "You're a tiny little bit scary."
Kai deflated. "I—Hiro—what—"
Ren crawled over and hugged both of them, still laughing quietly into Kai's shoulder.
He kissed Hiro's cheek. "You don't need a mommy, Hiro. You just need people who love you."
Hiro looked between them. "Do you love me a lot?"
Ren nodded. "More than anything in the world."
Kai rested his forehead against Hiro's. "More than you can imagine."
Hiro smiled, lifting his dinosaur toy proudly. "Okay then. I have two daddies instead of a mommy."He paused."Can I have ice cream?"
Ren snorted. "Nice try."
Kai sighed, standing up with Hiro still in his arms. "Bath time. Then pajamas. Then we'll talk about ice cream."
Hiro pointed accusingly. "See? Papa is the mommy."
Ren dissolved into giggles again.
Kai groaned miserably into Hiro's shoulder as Ren wheezed on the floor.
Later that night, after Hiro fell asleep with his dinosaur tucked under his arm, Kai and Ren stood in the doorway watching him.
Ren whispered, "Boy mommy."
Kai wrapped his arm around Ren's waist and whispered in his ear, "Keep talking and I'll make you the strict parent instead."
Ren giggled. "Impossible. I'm soft."
Kai kissed his cheek. "That's why he picked you as Daddy."
Ren leaned his head on Kai's shoulder. "Today was perfect."
Kai squeezed him gently. "Yeah. It was."
They stood there quietly, listening to Hiro's soft breaths.
Their son.Their family.Their new, messy, beautiful life.
And Ren whispered, smiling:
"He really thinks you're the mommy."
Kai groaned. "Ren—please."
Ren laughed into his chest, and Kai couldn't help the smile that slipped out too.
