Chapter 12 - "A new beginning, in our new beginning"

The rain had stopped just minutes before they stepped out of the black car, leaving the world washed clean and smelling faintly of wet pavement and cold morning air. The adoption center stood ahead of them, an older building with pale walls and big windows fogged from the warmth inside. Ren clutched his umbrella even though the drizzle had already faded, nerves tightening every muscle in his body.

Kai closed the car door with that eerie calm he always seemed to carry. But even he looked slightly tense today, shoulders more rigid than usual. The morning light caught the faint sheen of anxiety in his eyes before he hid it behind his usual, composed expression.

Ren took a breath and whispered, "I can't believe we're actually doing this."

Kai glanced at him, offering a small smile. "We're doing it together."

That single word—together—hit Ren straight in the chest, grounding him more than the cold air.He nodded, taking another breath before they stepped toward the entrance.

Inside, the center was warm, filled with soft chatter and children's laughter echoing down the hallway. A receptionist with gentle eyes looked up as they entered.

"You're here for Hiroto, yes?"

Ren immediately straightened, nerves spiking. "Yes."

Kai gently brushed his hand against the back of Ren's. Not grabbing it. Not making a scene. Just reminding him silently: I'm here.

The receptionist led them through softly lit hallways until they reached a familiar playroom. The same one where they had first met Hiro. The same one where Ren had watched Kai kneel down in a tailored suit just to help a little boy build a block tower.

The door opened.

There he was.

Hiro sat on the carpet with two other kids, pushing a small toy car along a track. His dark hair was a tiny bit messy, sticking up in soft tufts, and his cheeks were round and faintly flushed. The moment he heard their footsteps, he turned.

His eyes widened like he was seeing something impossible—like a dream that he had tried not to hope for too hard.

Ren's breath caught.Kai let out the softest exhale that Ren almost didn't notice.

Hiro stood up.

He didn't run. He didn't jump. He didn't shout.

He simply walked over with small, steady steps, gripping the toy car in his hands. When he reached them, he looked up with those big, hopeful eyes.

"You came," he whispered.

Ren immediately crouched down, heart melting. "Of course we came."

Hiro touched the edge of Ren's sleeve, just like the first time they met, but this time he wasn't hesitant. It was gentle, shy, as if asking silently: Is it really okay to hold on?

Ren gave his hand, letting Hiro clutch his fingers.

Kai knelt too, carefully adjusting the boy's jacket where it had slipped off his shoulder. "Are you ready, Hiro?"

Hiro looked between them. His eyes lingered on Kai's face a moment longer, recognizing him, trusting him. Then he nodded.

"Ready."

The social worker smiled warmly. "We'll go over the paperwork in the office. Hiro can stay with you while we finalize everything."

Ren lifted Hiro into his arms—not too high, not too tight—and the little boy wrapped his arms around Ren's neck with surprising familiarity. His small hands gripped Ren's shirt as if afraid he might disappear if he let go.

Ren swallowed hard, holding him a bit closer.

Kai's gaze softened watching them, and he brushed his knuckles lightly against Hiro's back. "We'll be finished soon."

They followed the social worker into a cozy office with a wooden desk and stacks of neatly organized folders. Ren sat on the couch with Hiro on his lap, while Kai took the seat beside them, leaning slightly forward, elbows resting on his knees.

The social worker slid a thick file toward Kai. "These are the final documents. Everything else has already been cleared and approved."

Ren glanced at the stack of papers, feeling overwhelmed all over again. But Kai didn't flinch. He picked up the pen, flipping through page after page and signing with steady strokes. His confidence and calm somehow made the moment feel safer, more real.

Halfway through, Hiro shifted on Ren's lap, tugging gently at the buttons on Kai's sleeve.

Kai paused, meeting Hiro's eyes. "Something wrong, Hiro?"

Hiro shook his head. "No… I just… wanted to touch you."

Ren's heart nearly burst.

Kai gently lifted Hiro's tiny hand and set it against his palm. "You can."

Hiro's fingers curled around Kai's thumb, small and trusting.

Ren thought he might cry right there.

This is our kid, he thought, breath trembling. This is our son.

After the final form was signed, the social worker stood and bowed her head slightly. "Congratulations. Hiro is officially yours."

Ren held his breath.

Then something released inside him, something warm and bright and terrifyingly tender. He looked at Kai and found the CEO staring straight at him with an expression Ren had never seen before—soft, unguarded, full of something that looked like awe.

Kai whispered, "We're parents."

Ren laughed—quiet and shaky—and pressed a kiss to Hiro's forehead. "Yeah… we are."

Hiro curled into Ren's chest, eyes drooping, overwhelmed and sleepy.

The social worker gave them a small folder, Hiro's favorite stuffed dinosaur, and a moment to themselves. When the door closed, silence filled the room except for Hiro's soft breaths.

Ren shifted him slightly so he could see Kai better. "He's ours," he whispered, voice breaking.

Kai reached out and brushed Hiro's hair back with the gentlest touch Ren had ever seen. "Yes. He's ours."

They left the building together—the new family of three—stepping into air that felt colder but brighter somehow, like the world outside had changed too.

Kai held the umbrella, keeping the rain off Ren and Hiro while Ren held the boy securely against his chest. "Careful on the steps," Kai murmured. "Don't slip."

Ren rolled his eyes affectionately. "You think I'd drop our son?"

Kai's gaze flickered with something soft. "No. I know you wouldn't."

When they reached the car, Kai opened the door and lifted Hiro gently from Ren's arms, settling him into the car seat they had installed that morning. The little boy blinked up at him sleepily.

"Are we going home now?" Hiro whispered.

Kai paused. "Yes. Home."

Ren buckled him in, fingers trembling slightly from the weight of the moment.

During the drive, Hiro dozed off, curled around his dinosaur, head bobbing gently with the movement of the car. Ren kept glancing back every two seconds, unsure if he should laugh or cry or both.

Kai drove slower than he ever had in his life.

At one stoplight, Ren whispered, "He's sleeping."

Kai's voice lowered. "I know."

"And he trusted us enough to fall asleep just like that."

Kai looked at him briefly before returning his attention to the road. "I'd trust you too."

Ren blinked, stunned. "Me?"

Kai gave him a small smile. "Yes. You."

Ren's heart did something violent and fluttery in his chest. "You're being soft again," he whispered.

Kai let out a quiet breath. "Today feels like a day to be soft."

Ren reached over and slid his fingers between Kai's on the gear shift. Kai didn't pull away.

When they finally arrived at the apartment—their apartment, now a home for more than just two—they carried Hiro inside together. Ren held the boy close while Kai unlocked the door. The moment they stepped in, Ren looked around and almost choked.

Kai had prepared everything.

The small bedroom down the hall had been quietly transformed over the last few weeks. Ren had known about the furniture and the soft light-blue curtains, but he hadn't seen the little bookshelf filled with picture books, or the tiny mountain of fluffy blankets folded neatly on the bed, or the toy car resting on the windowsill.

Kai cleared his throat awkwardly. "I… guessed he might like these."

Ren stared at him, disbelieving. "You set this up?"

Kai looked away. "I wanted him to feel safe."

Ren's eyes prickled, vision blurring. "Kai… it's perfect."

They laid Hiro gently on the small bed, his tiny hands still clutching the dinosaur. Ren pulled one of the blankets over him carefully, smoothing it over his shoulders.

Hiro stirred slightly, eyes half-opening. "Ren?"

"I'm right here," Ren whispered.

"Is Kai here too?"

Kai knelt down beside the bed immediately. "I'm here."

Hiro blinked twice, then smiled—a small, tired, trusting smile. "Okay."

His eyes drifted closed again.

Kai stayed kneeling long after that, watching Hiro breathe. Ren placed a hand on his back, rubbing slow circles between his shoulder blades.

"He's home," Ren whispered.

Kai nodded slowly, still staring at the boy. "He's really home."

Ren leaned a little closer, their heads nearly touching as they both watched their son sleep.

Ren whispered, "You know… you're going to be a really good dad."

Kai let out a single shaky exhale, as if the words hit deeper than Ren expected. "Only because you'll be here with me."

Ren's heart tightened. He leaned in and kissed Kai's cheek softly, lingering a moment longer than necessary. "We'll figure it out. Together."

Kai turned slightly toward him, eyes soft. "Together."

They stepped quietly out of the room, leaving the door slightly open so Hiro wouldn't be scared if he woke up.

In the living room, the weight of the day finally settled. Ren collapsed onto the couch, covering his face with his hands. "I'm going to cry for the next three hours, aren't I?"

Kai sat beside him, slipping an arm around Ren's shoulders. "Probably."

Ren leaned into him, letting his head rest against Kai's shoulder. "This is real," he whispered. "We're a family."

Kai pressed a soft kiss to Ren's temple. "Yes. We are."

Ren stayed still for a long moment, letting the warmth of Kai's arms and the unbelievable peace of the apartment settle into his bones. The sound of the rain outside softened into a calming rhythm.

He turned his face into Kai's shoulder, voice muffled. "I really love you, you know."

Kai didn't answer right away. He just held Ren tighter, brushing a hand through his hair.

Then, softly:

"I love you too."

Ren froze only for a second before melting completely, burying himself in Kai's chest with a trembling laugh.

"When did you get so good at—at everything?"

Kai chuckled quietly. "Only when it comes to you."

They stayed there on the couch, wrapped in each other, their son sleeping safely in the next room. The world felt warmer, quieter, and more complete than it had ever been.

Kai sighed softly. "Ren… welcome to the rest of our lives."

Ren smiled against his shoulder. "I wouldn't trade it for anything."

And somewhere down the hall, Hiro shifted in his sleep, dreaming peacefully for the first time in a very long time—finally home, finally loved.

Finally part of a family.
