Chapter 15 - "The last chapter of our story...again."

Disneyland was everything Hiro had dreamed of and more.

The moment they walked through the gates, Hiro practically exploded with joy, running ahead with his tiny backpack bouncing behind him like a baby puppy. Ren jogged after him, laughing breathlessly, while Kai filmed them with the softest smile anyone had ever seen on him.

Hiro kept spinning around, arms flailing."We're at DISNEY WOOOOOOORLD!!!"

Ren corrected him between laughs. "Land, baby, this one's DisneyLAND—"

Hiro hopped onto Ren like a koala."No, Daddy Ren, it's Disney WOOOORLD."

Ren pretended to collapse under the tiny weight."Oh no! I've been defeated by the small child!"

Kai shook his head, pretending to sigh dramatically."Tragic. I guess I'm a single father now."

Ren shot him a glare from the ground."Get over here and help me, you menace."

Hiro giggled so hard he fell sideways onto the grass.

Kai leaned down and kissed Ren quickly."If you stop dying on the floor, I'll buy you churros."

Ren gasped. "Why didn't you say that sooner?!"

They spent the morning weaving through rides—spinning teacups, a slow boat ride that made Hiro gasp at every animatronic creature, a carousel that Ren rode with Hiro while Kai took photos like a proud dad.

Hiro sat on Kai's shoulders at one point, tiny hands tangled in Kai's hair."This is the BEST DAY EVER!"

Ren nodded, linking his arm with Kai's."It really is."

They ate Mickey-shaped pretzels, Hiro tried on goofy hats, Kai made Ren pose for embarrassing pictures, Ren bought Hiro a bubble wand, Hiro waved it around so much he nearly blinded three people—

It was perfect.

Too perfect.

AFTERNOON – THE PARADE

They found a spot near the front of the crowd to watch the parade. Music blasted, floats sparkled, characters waved, and Hiro's eyes shone like tiny stars.

Ren lifted Hiro up so he could see better."Look! It's your favorite one!"

Hiro squealed, waving so hard his arm wobbled like jelly."They're REAL! Daddy look they're REEAAAL!"

Kai kissed Ren's temple softly."You two look adorable."

Ren grinned. "We're a package deal."

Kai slipped an arm around his waist."And I'm not returning either of you."

Ren leaned into him, warm and safe and—

THE MOMENT EVERYTHING SHIFTED

It happened fast.

The music cut.

Screams started.

The air changed—sharp, afraid, heavy. Crowds moved suddenly, shoving, scrambling, voices rising.

Ren turned immediately, gripping Hiro tight."Hiro—baby—hold Daddy Ren, don't let go."

Kai's voice was low, urgent."Stay close to me. Don't run. Don't let go."

Hiro clung to Ren's shirt, confused but obedient.

Then—

A loud sound tore through the air.

People dropped. Some dove. Some scattered.

Kai yanked them toward a wall for cover, shielding both of them with his body—

But in the chaos, Ren shifted to grab Hiro—

And then Ren stumbled.

Not dramatically. Not with noise. Not with anything violent.

He just… folded.

Like his body suddenly had no strength.

Hiro blinked."Daddy Ren? Why are you sitting on the floor?"

Kai's breath froze as he caught Ren, lowering him gently."Hey—hey—Ren, look at me. Look at me."

Ren tried to speak.

He didn't.Couldn't.

His eyes fluttered, searching for Kai's face, for Hiro's, desperately trying to say something he no longer had time for.

Kai's hands shook as he cradled him."No—no, no, Ren, stay with me. Please. Please stay. Don't close your eyes. Don't—don't—"

Ren reached weakly for him—just a touch, just a last soft brush of fingers against Kai's cheek.

Then his hand fell.

And Kai broke.

Right there on the ground, in the middle of Disneyland's chaos, he folded over Ren's still body and cried in a way he never had in his life—the kind of sound no one should ever have to make.

HIRO'S CONFUSION

Hiro watched with wide, puzzled eyes, clutching his bubble wand, tilting his head like he didn't understand the rules of this moment.

He tugged lightly on Kai's sleeve."Daddy Kai… why are you crying? Is Daddy Ren doing a Halloween prank? Is he pretending? Is it like the movies with the cool laser guns? Are you acting?"

Kai didn't answer at first. He couldn't. His breath was shaking too hard, fingers curled into Ren's shirt like he could force life back into it.

"Daddy Kai?" Hiro whispered again, voice small. "What's wrong?"

Kai finally looked at him.

His eyes were broken.

He pulled Hiro close with one arm, holding him tightly against his chest, still cradling Ren with the other.

His voice was barely a whisper—cracked, trembling, desperate.

"It'll be okay, honey. We'll be okay."

But the lie trembled in the air.

Hiro leaned against him, confused but quiet, trying to be brave because Daddy Kai looked like he needed it.

Sirens screamed somewhere far away.People ran.Sunlight dimmed.

And in the middle of the happiest place on earth, Kai held his entire world—the past, the present, the only family he'd ever built—and felt it cracking in his hands.

Everything after that moment blurred, except for one thought echoing in his mind:

"I know we'll be fine...right?"
