Chapter 29 - First use - The Eyes of Fear

Leo began to wonder whether he had left anything behind while waiting for the high-speed train.

All the cash he had brought from home inside his duffel bag had already been converted into Korean won at a bank before he came here.

Since he no longer needed the duffel bag, he tossed it into a trash bin with the smug arrogance of a rich brat and bought himself a backpack.

The outermost part of the backpack was made entirely of a transparent compartment with air holes, allowing him to put small pets inside. The other compartments held several emergency necessities.

For example: a spare T-shirt in case he got sweaty, two spare batteries for his phone, sunglasses so he wouldn't attract too much attention, some canned food for cats, a small amount of cash…

Even though Leo had extra money lately, he still hadn't changed his phone, because it worked well enough for him and also had a distinctive feature: the battery could be removed easily.

Before leaving the house, Leo charged both spare batteries with a special charger. That way, even if his phone died, all he had to do was replace the battery.

When Leo's pale appearance combined with the sight of him sitting on a bench with a white kitten in his lap, he drew the attention of many people.

In a place like South Korea, cosmetic surgery was something that nearly eighty percent of the young population took part in. Naturally, this became Leo's greatest undercover advantage.

Even though people passing by turned their heads to look at him, no one went overboard. In fact, for some, the cat in his arms, with its heterochromatic eyes, was far more interesting.

While Leo was waiting for his train, he suddenly felt someone tap his shoulder.

Unsurprisingly, the person showing him this much interest was an American tourist, and he said he wanted to take a picture of Leo.

When Leo turned his head, he saw that several other Americans were waiting behind the man, so he refused the request in Korean.

Leo's idea was to put a language barrier between them and get rid of these guys faster.

But the plan fell apart when one of the people standing with the American group turned out to be a translator.

"The reason I refused in Korean was because I didn't even want to talk, if it's possible. Could you please stop bothering me?"

Americans have a unique kind of confidence, and it often irritates people who aren't American. Leo was one of the people who knew this best, yet he still couldn't stop himself from being surprised.

"Wow, dude, your English accent is even better than mine. We haven't met anyone who can speak proper English since we came to Korea."

Leo noticed that while the skinny man, who looked just as scrawny as himself, spoke loudly, everyone in the station turned their heads toward them. Then Leo smiled and answered, "Yeah, I can imagine..."

In the following seconds, Leo learned that the group in front of him was actually a family and their traveling the world. Not just that: they started telling him everything— their names, their ages, the schools they attended, and so on...

The translator who had spoken earlier knew that this kind of conversation wasn't very welcome in South Korea. Speaking loudly and having long conversations with strangers without asking for consent first weren't things Koreans viewed kindly.

Because of this, many tourist spots in Korea even put signs on the walls saying things like "Speaking loudly is prohibited."

The interpreter tried to step in and warn the American family a few times, but their enthusiastic chatter was like a raging sea that no ship could ever cut through.

Without noticing, the man had ended up outside the group.

The interpreter realized that the smile on Leo's face held a trace of anger, but then, all of a sudden, Leo's smile turned completely natural.

The interpreter had no idea what had happened, but the American family's voices had gone silent after a few seconds.

None of the family members knew what was happening either, but as they stared at Leo's smile, they slowly began to step back. Leo's innocent smile felt as if it were hiding a terrifying killer beneath.

The oldest of the family, a middle-aged man, thought this must be the legendary "killing intent." At that moment, he remembered a Korean historical drama he had watched.

In the drama, there was an exaggerated scene where the emperor grew angry, and cold sweat trickled down everyone's back. But now the man realized that the scene wasn't exaggerated at all—he just hadn't met enough people capable of showing killing intent until now.

In reality, what was happening was Leo testing out his newly acquired ability.

Of course, Leo didn't unleash the ability fully on a group of innocent people.

He used it like slowly turning on a faucet.

Thankfully, the system-made ability had an extremely high degree of control.

When Leo first activated the ability, he barely got any reaction from the American family members—until the droplets from the faucet gathered and turned into a small stream.

And surprisingly, Leo also knew exactly how they felt. He could sense the killing intent they were feeling, but unlike them, he did not feel fear.

Leo then warned them that there were places in South Korea where speaking loudly wasn't appropriate.

Feeling the killing intent fade away, the family must have been in Japan before coming here, because they apologized to Leo following Japanese manners.

As Leo watched them leave with a smile, the people around him tried to figure out what had happened.

The ones who guessed the closest were the group of young people at the far corner of the station.

"He probably showed them the gun hidden at his waist. Look at how they ran."

"Should we call the police?"

"I don't think it's necessary."

"Hot guys can commit crimes, too. You can't defend someone just because he's handsome."

"Hmm, I still don't think it's necessary."

"Whatever, there's no need to risk him noticing us calling the police and shooting us. Besides, even if he has a gun, the fact that he passed through the checkpoint means he must have a permit."

"But he looks so young."

"Are you stupid? With all that makeup, you can't even see his real skin tone. How do you know his real age?"
