Chapter 149 - Chapter 149: The Monastery of Black Ice

The climb up the northern peak was brutal.

The wind howled like a wounded beast, whipping snow into their faces. The air was so thin it felt like breathing through a wet cloth. Lina's raw, burned hand throbbed with every heartbeat, but she kept her fingers wrapped tightly around the golden compass.

Behind her, Reyon was struggling. Without his full shadow, the biting cold seemed to affect him more deeply. He shivered violently, his breath coming in shallow, white clouds. Seren walked with her head down, her hands clamped over her ears to block out the howling wind.

"Just a little further," Lina shouted over the gale. "The compass is pulling us down into that valley!"

They crested the final ridge and looked down.

Lina's breath caught in her throat.

Nestled in a deep, bowl-shaped crater at the very peak of the mountain was a monastery. But it was not made of stone or wood. Every wall, every sweeping roof, every pillar was carved entirely from black, translucent ice.

It did not reflect the pale sunlight. It absorbed it. The black ice looked like a frozen nightmare, jagged and heavy, pressing down on the earth. And directly beneath the central courtyard of the monastery, the dark purple stain from the compass pulsed like a bruised heart.

"The leyline," Nia whispered, her teeth chattering. "It's right under the building."

They carefully descended the steep, icy path into the crater. As they approached the massive black ice doors, the howling wind suddenly died. The silence that replaced it was heavy and oppressive. It felt like the air itself was holding its breath.

Lina pushed the heavy doors open. They swung inward without a sound.

Inside, the cold was unnatural. It did not just chill their skin; it bit at their spiritual energy. Nia tried to summon a small blue flame to warm them, but the magic sputtered and died on her fingertips.

"The cold here suppresses cultivation," Nia said, her voice barely a whisper. "We are completely mortal in here."

The main hall was vast and dimly lit by the faint, eerie glow of the black ice. Lining the walls were dozens of monks. They sat on black ice cushions in perfect meditation. They wore thick, gray robes, but their skin was pale blue, frostbitten and ancient.

They were completely, terrifyingly still.

"Hello?" Mira called out softly.

The sound of her voice did not echo. The black ice walls swallowed the noise instantly.

Suddenly, the monk at the very front of the hall opened his eyes. His irises were completely white, blind and milky. He did not speak. Instead, he slowly raised a trembling, frost-covered hand and pointed at Lina's right hand. At the raw, red skin where the Censor's mark used to be. At the faint golden glow of the word Kai beneath her skin.

The monk reached into his robe and pulled out a small iron chisel. He turned to the black ice wall beside him and began to carve.

Scrape. Scrape. Scrape.

The sound was agonizingly loud in the silent hall. Lina and her friends watched as the monk carved characters into the frost.

YOU CARRY THE HUNGER, the wall read.

Lina stepped closer. "I carry the Quill," she corrected softly. "I carry the power to rewrite the dark."

The old monk stopped carving. He turned his blind, white eyes toward her. A look of profound, devastating pity crossed his weathered face. He went back to the wall.

THE QUILL IS NOT A TOOL, he carved. IT IS A PARASITE.

Lina's stomach dropped. "What are you talking about? The First Founder created it to heal the world. To plant the Spirit Root."

The monk shook his head slowly. He carved faster, his chisel flying.

THE FOUNDER DID NOT CREATE THE QUILL TO HEAL. SHE CREATED IT TO STEAL. THE WORLD HAD ITS OWN VOICE. ITS OWN CYCLE. THE QUILL WAS FORGED IN THIS VERY MOUNTAIN TO OVERWRITE THE WORLD'S TRUTH WITH HER OWN STORY. IT FEEDS ON TRUE NAMES. IT FEEDS ON SOULS.

The monk dropped the chisel. He reached up and pointed a long, icy finger at Lina's chest.

THE BOY'S NAME WAS NOT THE INK, the wall read. THE BOY'S NAME WAS THE BAIT.

Lina stared at the words, her heart hammering against her ribs. "No," she whispered. "Kai gave me his true name to seal the cage. It's inside me to protect me."

IT IS INSIDE YOU TO CONSUME YOU, the monk carved, his hand shaking. THE QUILL HAS TAKEN ROOT IN YOUR SOUL. IT IS USING THE BOY'S MEMORY TO KEEP YOU DOCILE WHILE IT EATS YOUR IDENTITY. IF YOU REACH THE FORGE BENEATH US, IT WILL NOT REWRITE THE WORLD. IT WILL REWRITE YOU INTO ITS MASTER.

Seren let out a small, terrified sob. She pressed her hands over her mouth.

Lina looked down at her right hand. The raw, red skin was pulsing. Beneath the surface, the golden word Kai was shifting. The letters were no longer steady. They were writhing, slowly rearranging themselves into a new, jagged symbol she didn't recognize.

It wasn't just a name anymore. It was a parasite. And it was hungry.

Suddenly, the black ice walls of the monastery began to groan.

A deep, terrifying crack echoed through the hall. The purple stain beneath the floor was reacting to Lina's proximity. The black ice was beginning to thaw.

And from the melting floor, a voice that sounded like grinding glaciers whispered up from the dark.

"My author... you have finally come home."
