Lina stepped into the center of the clearing. The black ink on the ground hissed and recoiled from her shoes, as if the corruption itself was afraid of her.
The shadow beasts at the edge of the clearing snarled. They lunged forward, their white teeth gleaming in the dark.
"Lina, the Censors!" Nia screamed.
"I know," Lina said. She did not stop.
She dropped to her knees in front of the dying fox spirit. The silver creature looked up at her with dim, golden eyes. Its nine tails were heavy with black sludge. The ink was eating it alive.
Lina placed both hands on the fox's head.
She closed her eyes and opened the floodgates.
The golden word Kai beneath her skin exploded with light. It did not just glow. It roared. Thick, brilliant rivers of golden ink poured from her palms, flooding into the fox spirit's body.
The effect was instant.
The black ink on the fox's fur began to boil. It shrieked like tearing metal as the golden light burned through it. The corruption dissolved, turning into clean, white steam that rose into the dark canopy.
The fox spirit threw back its head and let out a cry that shook the entire forest. Its nine tails flared with blinding silver light. The matted fur turned smooth and luminous. Its golden eyes snapped open, burning with ancient, fierce power.
But Lina was not done.
The golden ink did not stop at the fox. It raced across the ground, following the black veins of corruption back to the massive stone stele. The golden light climbed the ancient rock, burning away the thick vines of solid ink.
The original runes of the First Founder began to glow. They were not dark or heavy. They were warm and alive. The stele pulsed with a heartbeat of pure, clean spiritual energy.
A shockwave of golden light blasted outward from the clearing.
It hit the shadow beasts like a wall of fire. The dark creatures did not just scatter. They evaporated. Hundreds of shadow wolves, bears, and serpents dissolved into harmless gray mist, their white teeth crumbling to dust.
The black ink on the trees stopped flowing. The weeping bark sealed itself. The dead grass on the forest floor turned green again, sprouting fresh, vibrant shoots in seconds.
The Whispering Woods were healed. The leyline was clean.
The fox spirit stood up. It was magnificent. It towered over Lina, its nine silver tails swaying gracefully in the wind. It lowered its massive head and touched its nose gently to Lina's forehead.
"Thank you, little author," the fox's voice echoed in her mind. It was warm and deep, like a grandmother's lullaby. "The tear is mended. The ink is balanced."
Lina smiled. She reached up and stroked the fox's soft, silver fur.
Then, the silver eye on the back of her hand began to burn.
It was not a gentle heat. It was a searing, white-hot agony that made Lina scream. She clutched her hand to her chest, falling backward onto the grass.
"Lina!" Mira dropped to her knees beside her, grabbing her arm. "What is happening?"
"The Censors," Lina gasped through the pain. "They felt it. The surge was too big. They know exactly where we are."
She looked up at the sky.
The dark canopy of the forest was glowing purple. The clouds above were swirling into a massive, angry vortex. And from the center of the vortex, dozens of golden chains shot downward, crashing through the trees like spears of lightning.
"UNAUTHORIZED LEYLINE MANIPULATION DETECTED," the booming voice of the heavens shook the earth. "CLASS ONE VIOLATION. ALL CULTIVATORS IN THE SECTOR ARE TO BE SEIZED AND JUDGED."
The golden chains slammed into the ground around the clearing, forming a massive cage of burning light. The trees closest to the chains caught fire, their leaves turning to ash in seconds.
"Run!" Nia yelled.
The fox spirit roared. It swept three of its massive silver tails across the ground, creating a wall of pure wind that knocked the nearest golden chains aside.
"Go!" the fox commanded, its telepathic voice urgent. "I will hold the sky. You must reach the mountain pass before the chains close. The northern leyline is the only place the Censors cannot follow."
"We cannot leave you!" Seren cried.
"I am a guardian of the earth, little echo," the fox said gently. "The sky cannot hold me forever. But it can hold you. Run."
The fox spirit leaped into the air. Its nine tails blazed with silver fire as it slammed into the descending golden chains. The collision created a shockwave that flattened the trees for a hundred yards in every direction.
Lina scrambled to her feet. The pain in her hand was blinding, but she forced herself to move.
"The mountain pass!" Lina shouted, pointing north. "Follow the compass!"
They sprinted into the dark forest. Behind them, the sky was tearing apart. The golden chains multiplied, weaving together into a massive net that was slowly closing over the entire woodland. The sound of the fox spirit roaring against the heavens echoed through the trees, growing fainter with every step.
The silver eye on Lina's hand pulsed faster, burning hotter. It was a beacon. The Censors were tracking her spiritual signature.
"They are locking onto my mark!" Lina yelled over the roaring wind. "I am leading them right to us!"
"Then we need to cut it off!" Reyon shouted. He grabbed a sharp piece of broken bark from a shattered tree. "Lina, give me your hand!"
"No!" Mira screamed. "You cannot just cut a karmic seal! It will tear her soul apart!"
"We don't have a choice!" Nia cried, pointing up.
The golden net was dropping lower. The trees around them were splintering under the pressure. They had less than a minute before the cage closed completely.
Lina looked at the burning silver eye on her hand. She looked at the golden compass in her other hand. The needle was spinning wildly, pointing toward a narrow gap in the mountains ahead.
She made her choice.
Lina did not let Reyon cut the mark. Instead, she pressed her burning hand directly against the golden compass.
The golden ink inside the compass flared to life. It rushed into the silver eye, overwhelming the Censor's mark with pure, ancient authority. The silver eye turned gold for a split second, then shattered like glass.
The tracking signal died.
The golden chains above them faltered. They swung wildly, losing their target. The net slowed its descent.
"Now!" Lina screamed.
They burst through the tree line and hit the rocky slope of the mountain pass. The air was thin and freezing. The golden compass glowed steadily in Lina's hand, pointing deeper into the jagged peaks.
Behind them, the sky over the Whispering Woods was a battlefield of silver and gold. The fox spirit was still fighting, buying them time.
They climbed. The rocks were sharp and slippery with ice. Lina's legs burned. Her hand throbbed with a dull, aching pain where the Censor's mark had been. The skin was raw and red, but the tracking was gone.
They reached the top of the pass just as the sun began to rise.
Below them, the Whispering Woods were quiet. The golden chains had retracted into the clouds. The Censors had lost their target.
Lina collapsed onto the cold stone, gasping for air. Her friends dropped beside her, exhausted and battered.
"We lost them," Nia whispered, staring at the empty sky. "For now."
Lina looked down at the golden compass. The needle had stopped spinning. It was pointing straight ahead, toward a massive, snow-covered peak in the far distance. At the very top of the peak, barely visible through the clouds, was a dark, pulsing purple stain.
The next cage. The next shadow.
Lina closed her hand around the compass and stood up. Her body ached. Her hand burned. But her heart was steady.
"Let's keep moving," she said.
