Chapter 37 - I Go Alone

Blue suggested brunch and Seraphina agreed without hesitation, which was one of the things Blue had already catalogued about her: she did not perform reluctance. When she wanted something she said yes and when she didn't she said no and there was no performance of uncertainty in between. This was rarer than it should be.

Roman had looked at both of them when Blue announced the plan and said, with the expression of a man who knows something is happening and cannot identify the specific shape of it: "I'll be at the office."

Blue had said: "We know."

They went to a place two blocks from the house, warm and the kind of place that smelled like good coffee and effort, where the bread came without asking and the staff moved with the ease of people who genuinely liked being there. They got a corner table and ordered and looked at each other across the small square of white tablecloth and Seraphina said: "You were going to tell me something last night."

"I was," Blue said.
