She lay in the dark and went over everything Blue had told her.
She had done this before, taken something large and turned it over in the dark until she could see all its sides. She was good at it and she had been doing it since she was a child in a house where things were not explained, only performed, and understanding required your own private excavation.
But this was different from the other excavations. This one had a person at the centre of it.
He was seventeen when it started. Twenty when she came home and didn't know his name. Twenty-four when his father died. He had been twenty-five when he started Carter Group and poured everything into it with the kind of focused intensity she now understood was not just ambition. It was somewhere to put the weight.
