Day thirteen.
Six in the morning.
Naruto arrived first.
He set up at the center of the training ground.
Not against the post.
Open space.
He waited.
Sasuke arrived at six-oh-two.
He set his bag against the fence.
He looked at Naruto.
"Rules," Naruto said.
"I'm the one attacking," Sasuke said.
"I know. I want to establish parameters."
"The parameters are: you attempt the clean form, I create disruption, we record the results."
"That's very clinical for something that's basically you getting to hit me."
"It IS clinical," Sasuke said. "Tobirama asked for data."
"You agreed too fast yesterday."
"I agreed at an appropriate speed for a useful training exercise."
"You agreed in one second."
"That's appropriate for a simple decision."
Naruto looked at him.
"Levels," he said. "We do levels. Start low and escalate."
"Agreed."
"Level one is just movement. You move around me, no attack."
"That's barely disruption."
"It establishes baseline. Then we escalate."
Sasuke considered this.
"Fine," he said.
Naruto gathered wind nature chakra.
"Ready?" he said.
"Yes."
Sasuke started moving.
Level one: movement only.
Attempt one: clean form held to completion.
Sasuke circling didn't affect the entry angle.
Data recorded.
"That's your baseline," Sasuke said. "Movement alone doesn't affect it."
"Right. Level two."
Level two: movement plus chakra pressure.
Sasuke moving with a light Sharingan activation, no direct technique.
Attempt two: collapsed at the terminal stage.
The chakra pressure disrupted the entry angle decision.
"There," Sasuke said. "The decision point is sensitive to external chakra signatures."
"I was deciding and then you added pressure and I reconsidered."
"Yes. You need to decide before the pressure arrives."
"Like the census."
"Yes. Decide first. Let the technique happen at the edge."
Attempt three: same level, new approach.
Naruto decided the entry angle before Sasuke began moving.
Clean form.
Seven seconds.
Dispersed naturally.
"Better," Sasuke said.
"I decided before you started."
"Yes. That's the key."
They recorded it.
"Level three," Naruto said.
Level three: Sasuke actively attacking, but telegraphed.
Attempt four: Naruto dodged the attack.
The wind nature collapsed.
"You prioritized the dodge over the technique," Sasuke said.
"Because you were attacking me."
"The dodge was correct," Sasuke said. "The technique cannot be primary when you're under real pressure. It has to be secondary."
Naruto stared at him.
"...The technique has to be secondary."
"Yes. You're not going to use wind nature as your primary action in combat. You'll use it as the secondary action while your primary attention is on the threat."
"So I need to be able to do it without it being the thing I'm thinking about."
"Yes."
Naruto thought about this.
He thought about the census.
About how the big thing happened at the edge while the attention was on something small.
He thought about what the small thing was in combat.
"The opponent," he said slowly. "My attention should be on you. The wind nature happens at the edge."
"Yes."
"Same as the birds."
"Yes."
"I've been training it backwards," Naruto said. "I've been making the technique the main thing."
"For the foundation training, that was correct," Sasuke said. "You needed it to be the main thing to develop the clean form. Now that the form exists, you need to move it to the edge."
Naruto looked at him.
"How long have you been thinking about this."
"Since Tobirama described the exercise," Sasuke said. "The logic was immediate."
"You didn't tell me yesterday."
"You needed to discover it in the session."
"Why?"
"Because if I'd told you, you'd have tried to implement it conceptually instead of finding it through the training. It works better when you find it."
Naruto stared at him.
"That's very strategic."
"It's practical."
"It's BOTH---"
"Level four," Sasuke said. "Ready?"
Naruto gathered chakra.
"Ready," he said.
Attempts five through eleven:
Five: Sasuke attacked. Naruto's attention moved to the attack. Wind nature collapsed.
Six: Same result.
Seven: Naruto held the entry angle. Wind nature reached terminal. Sasuke's strike landed on his arm. Wind nature completed but Naruto stumbled.
Eight: Naruto took the hit, completed the clean form, recovered. Three seconds from contact to completion.
Nine: Sasuke used Sharingan. Naruto's attention almost moved. He found the sleeping bird on the low branch. Wind nature held. Sasuke's second strike caught his shoulder. Clean form completed before impact.
Ten: Sasuke attacked twice. Naruto completed the form between strikes.
Eleven: Sasuke attacked three times in quick succession. Naruto completed the form on the third.
They stopped.
Both of them breathing harder than baseline.
Naruto had a developing bruise on his left arm from attempt seven.
He looked at his hand.
"That was the technique being secondary," he said.
"Yes."
"While you were hitting me."
"Yes."
"And it worked."
"By attempt eight," Sasuke said. "With refinement."
Naruto held his arm.
Not seriously hurt.
The specific ache of being hit by someone with good aim.
"How was the perception layer?" he said.
"Useful." Sasuke was already writing. "Reading intention fields under combat pressure is different from reading them in training. The data from attempts eight through eleven is going to be significant for the cultivation."
"How?"
"Because the intention field was cleaner under pressure than in low-stakes conditions," Sasuke said. "Your wind nature technique's intention resolves more clearly when something is actually at stake."
Naruto looked at him.
"...Because I actually have to decide," he said.
"Yes. In low-stakes conditions, you can hesitate. Under pressure, you can't."
"So pressure improves the clarity."
"For both of us," Sasuke said. "The technique's intention is clearer. My perception of it is sharper."
Naruto thought about that.
He thought about what Tobirama had said.
The exercise will benefit both of you.
"Okay," Naruto said. "Same tomorrow."
"Different level structure," Sasuke said. "We've established what works. Tomorrow we vary the timing and angle."
"You're already planning tomorrow's attacks."
"I'm planning the data collection structure."
"That's the same thing."
"It's---"
"Sasuke."
"What."
"You're planning tomorrow's attacks."
"...The timing and angle variations are for data purposes."
"You're excited about it."
"I'm interested in the research outcomes."
"Those are the same thing."
Sasuke looked at him.
"Go get the bruise treated," he said.
"It's fine."
"Sakura will lecture you if you let it set."
"She's at Tsunade's ground."
"She'll find out."
"How would she---"
"She always finds out."
Naruto looked at his arm.
He thought about Sakura's record-keeping habits.
"...I'll go to the medical station," he said.
"Good."
He started walking.
"Sasuke."
"What."
"Good session."
Sasuke was already writing the data notes.
"Yes," he said. "It was."
