Hokage's Office --- Konoha
The weekly observation report arrived at nine in the morning.
Standard format.
Standard header.
Kakashi's specific handwriting, which was neater than most people expected and slightly more formal than his speech.
Hiruzen poured his tea.
He read the report.
Team 7 Weekly Observation Report
Submitted by: Hatake Kakashi
Week: Two post-sealing
Seal maintenance status: Stable. Toneri's diagnostics confirm standard maintenance readings. No anomalous resonance detected.
Kaguya window estimate: Array reinforcement holding at projected rate. Revised estimate: three to four months before next maintenance requirement. Toneri and the research group are developing the monitoring framework.
Research collaboration (Toneri/Tobirama/Sasuke/Jiraiya/Naruto): Active and productive. The data compilation from the activation is proceeding. Toneri's integration into the group has been faster than anticipated. Attribution: Naruto explained everything using ramen analogies. This apparently works.
Hiruzen paused.
He looked at that sentence.
This apparently works.
He kept reading.
Individual status:
Uzumaki Naruto: Wind nature training day twelve. First clean form achieved on attempt 96. Entry angle resolution confirmed. Secondary Rasengan modification stable and reliable across standard training conditions. Sage Mode foundation: stable at two-minute holds. Rate of improvement suggests stable form access within eight to twelve days. Nine-Tails cooperation: ongoing. Rate of internal gate cooperation exceeds any historical precedent for jinchūriki development.
Note: The above is described as a normal Tuesday by the subject.
Hiruzen read that note twice.
He continued.
Uchiha Sasuke: Six Paths seed cultivation at 71% clarity. Intention-perception now reliable at one kilometer radius under standard conditions. Calibration precision improving daily, partly due to Naruto's wind nature attempts providing consistent data points. The interaction between Naruto's development and Sasuke's perception layer appears to be multiplicative rather than additive. See: compounding.
Haruno Sakura: Third week of apprenticeship. Tsunade has not formally described her as exceptional. She has, however, begun assigning her the exercises that come after exceptional. Bilateral split: 58 seconds. Healing pulse: 26 minutes. Strength application: boulder-splitting reliable across seven attempts. She informed me this morning that she intends to break Tsunade's expected timeline on every milestone. I believe her.
Note on Tsunade: She hasn't smiled in three weeks. She does, however, check Sakura's log before she arrives each morning to see the previous day's numbers. I've seen her do this. She doesn't know I've seen her do this.
Hiruzen set down his tea.
He thought about Tsunade checking the log each morning.
He kept reading.
General observation:
The three of them are in the training ground by six every morning without coordination. They don't discuss arrival times. They simply arrive. I've observed this for two weeks. There is no schedule. It appears to be the natural result of three people who have decided to do something and are doing it.
The post has three marks on it now. The Rasengan fracture (Naruto), a Chidori burn (Sasuke), and a diagonal wind nature cut (Naruto, day twelve). I have no tactical analysis to add to this. It's simply worth noting.
Hiruzen looked at that paragraph.
He thought about the post.
He kept reading.
Summary assessment:
Team 7 continues to develop at a rate that suggests the original evaluation structure I designed for them was appropriate for where they were and is no longer appropriate for where they are. I am adjusting my instructional approach accordingly.
Based on current trajectory, I expect Team 7 to surpass my ability to meaningfully instruct them within approximately eighteen months.
This is not a complaint.
It is the best possible problem for a teacher to have.
Hiruzen set down the report.
He sat with it for a moment.
He looked at the window.
At the arena below.
At the scroll, still floating where it had always been.
Gold faded now.
Just paper.
He thought about teaching.
About what it was for.
He thought about Kakashi.
Who had been Minato's student.
And Naruto's teacher.
And had written it is the best possible problem for a teacher to have in a formal weekly report.
He thought about the chain of it.
From the First Hokage training the village's early shinobi.
To Hiruzen training the Sannin.
To Jiraiya training Minato.
To Minato dying to give Naruto a chance.
To Kakashi teaching what he could while he could.
And now: Tobirama giving technical guidance to a twelve-year-old who typed in all caps.
And Tsunade checking a student's log before she arrived.
And Jiraiya making notes in his notebook and not explaining them.
He thought about what teaching was for.
It was for this.
The next generation surpassing you.
Not despite you.
Because of you.
He looked at the report.
He thought about Kakashi writing this is not a complaint.
He thought about the specific grace of someone who understood what success looked like and was willing to name it even when it meant acknowledging their own diminishing necessity.
He picked up his pen.
He wrote his response.
Noted.
Well done, Kakashi.
He set down the pen.
He looked at the window.
He was smiling.
Not broadly.
Just --- smiling.
The specific smile of someone who had spent a lifetime building things and was seeing one of them stand up on its own.
He picked up his tea.
He drank it.
Konoha --- Streets
Kakashi received the response through the standard channel.
Two words.
Noted. Well done, Kakashi.
He read it while walking to the training ground.
He kept walking.
He thought about the report.
About the thing he'd written at the end.
He'd almost cut it.
It was personal in a way that weekly operational reports weren't supposed to be.
He'd kept it because it was true and because truth belonged in reports even when it didn't fit the format.
It is the best possible problem for a teacher to have.
He'd meant it.
He thought about Minato.
About what it had felt like to watch a student become extraordinary.
He'd only seen the beginning of that --- Minato at fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, the Flying Thunder God coming together, the specific genius of a boy who reinvented techniques as naturally as breathing.
He'd only seen the beginning.
He thought about what Jiraiya had seen.
The whole arc of it.
He thought about what he was seeing now.
Three people in a training ground every morning.
A post with three marks.
A rate of development that was going to make eighteen months look generous.
He thought about it is the best possible problem for a teacher to have.
He thought that was true.
He thought it was the truest thing he'd written in a long time.
He arrived at the training ground.
Naruto was attempting wind nature.
Sasuke was watching the intention field.
Sakura wasn't there --- she was at Tsunade's ground --- but her presence was in the training log sitting open against the post.
She'd written her yesterday numbers in the margin before she left.
Kakashi looked at them.
Bilateral split: 58 seconds. Healing pulse: 26 minutes. Note: Tsunade said the diagnostic chakra applications start tomorrow. I told her I was ready. She didn't disagree.
He thought about that last sentence.
She didn't disagree.
He thought that was probably the most Sakura sentence he'd ever read.
He sat at the edge of the training ground.
He opened his book.
He didn't read it.
He watched.

[Kakashi Hatake: I haven't told you what was in the report.]
[Might Guy: I DON'T NEED TO KNOW!! THE RESPONSE WAS WELL DONE!! THAT'S ENOUGH!!]
Kakashi looked at the chat.
He thought about thirty years of Guy showing up loud enough that the silence couldn't win.
He thought about he kept showing up louder than the silence.
He thought about the Eternal Rival Seal.
He felt it, faintly, in his chest.
The warmth of knowing someone was there.
He sent: Thank you, Guy.
[Might Guy: OF COURSE!! WE ARE ETERNAL RIVALS!! YOUR VICTORIES ARE MY VICTORIES!!]
[Might Guy: ALTHOUGH I NOTE THAT I ALSO HAD A VERY GOOD WEEK AND NOBODY SENT ME A REPORT ABOUT IT!!]
[Kakashi Hatake: What did you do this week?]
[Might Guy: LEE HELD THE SIXTH GATE STABILIZATION SEAL FOR FOUR MINUTES WITHOUT EXTERNAL SUPPORT!! FOUR MINUTES!! KAKASHI!!]
[Kakashi Hatake: ...That's extraordinary.]
[Might Guy: IT IS!! THE POWER OF HARD WORK AND YOUTH!!]
[Rock Lee: GUY-SENSEI!! I HEARD MY NAME!!]
[Might Guy: LEE!! I WAS TELLING KAKASHI ABOUT YOUR FOUR-MINUTE HOLD!!]
[Rock Lee: THE POWER OF YOUTH FLOWS THROUGH ME EVERY DAY!! GUY-SENSEI!!]
[Might Guy: LEE!! YOSH!!]
Kakashi set down the chat.
He watched the training ground.
He thought about the report.
About the best possible problem for a teacher to have.
He thought about Lee holding the Gate Stabilization Seal for four minutes.
About Sakura's she didn't disagree.
About Naruto's diagonal wind nature mark.
He thought about what eighteen months looked like from where he was standing.
He thought: well done was right.
Not for anything he'd done specifically.
For being here.
For showing up every morning.
For writing the honest thing in the report.
For understanding what the best possible problem looked like and being glad about it.
He thought that was enough.
More than enough.
He watched Naruto throw attempt one hundred and three.
It was clean.
Slightly cleaner than ninety-six.
He made a note in his own log.
He kept watching.
Group Chat:
[Uzumaki Naruto: kakashi-sensei.]
[Kakashi Hatake: Mm.]
[Uzumaki Naruto: you're doing the watching thing.]
[Kakashi Hatake: I'm always doing the watching thing.]
[Uzumaki Naruto: you usually read at the same time.]
[Kakashi Hatake: ...]
[Kakashi Hatake: The book can wait.]
[Uzumaki Naruto: ...]
[Uzumaki Naruto: okay.]
[Uzumaki Naruto: one hundred and three. it was cleaner than ninety-six.]
[Kakashi Hatake: I know. I saw.]
[Uzumaki Naruto: you saw from all the way over there?]
[Kakashi Hatake: I've been watching you train for months. I know what clean looks like.]
[Uzumaki Naruto: ...]
[Uzumaki Naruto: kakashi-sensei.]
[Kakashi Hatake: What.]
[Uzumaki Naruto: well done.]
A pause.
[Kakashi Hatake: ...I'm the teacher.]
[Uzumaki Naruto: yeah.]
[Uzumaki Naruto: well done anyway.]
Kakashi looked at the chat.
He looked at the training ground.
He thought about the chain of it.
From teacher to student to teacher.
Going both directions simultaneously.
He thought about Naruto learning to count birds from his father's street corner method.
He thought about how things passed forward.
He thought about well done going both directions.
He put the chat down.
He watched.
