Chapter 242 - Toneri Comes to Earth. He Finds the Darker Patch.

Southern Gate --- Konoha

Seven forty-five in the morning.

Not dramatic.

Toneri arrived the way most things arrived when they were finally happening after a long time of being anticipated: quietly, and slightly to the left of where he'd expected to be standing.

He'd expected the eastern gate.

Naruto had said the southern gate specifically.

The darker patch.

Old repair work.

Shoulder height on the left side.

He was at the southern gate.

He looked at it.

The wood was old.

Well-maintained.

The color of something that had been exposed to many years of weather and had decided to stay standing anyway.

He moved to the left side.

He found the darker patch at shoulder height.

He looked at it.

He put his hand on it.

He stood there.

He'd spent twenty years on the Moon looking at Earth.

Small.

Blue.

Real in the way that things looked real from a distance.

He was standing on it now.

The ground was under his feet.

Not stone the way the Moon Temple's floors were stone.

Different.

Soil beneath the paving.

The specific give of Earth under Earth.

He could feel it.

He stood with his hand on the darker patch and felt it.

He thought about twenty years of window views.

He thought about Naruto saying when you come through that gate, that's how you'll know you're actually there.

He was there.

He stood for a while.

Not doing anything.

Just --- there.

A Konoha ANBU on the gate spotted him and moved to intercept.

Then stopped.

Because the Hokage had issued a very specific protocol update two weeks ago with a description of a pale young man with white hair who might arrive at the gates unannounced.

The protocol said: Do not intercept. Notify Hatake Kakashi. Offer directions to Ichiraku Ramen if asked.

The ANBU notified Kakashi.

Then returned to position.

Toneri stayed at the gate for another four minutes.

Then he took his hand off the darker patch.

He walked into Konoha.

Konoha --- Streets

He hadn't known what to expect.

The records described Konoha.

Mission reports mentioned it.

The chat showed him the training ground and the shop and the arena.

He hadn't known what it would feel like to walk through it.

It felt: full.

Not crowded, exactly.

Full in the way that living places were full.

The specific density of many people's daily choices occupying the same space over many years.

He could feel the natural energy here.

Different from the Moon Temple's ancient structured energy.

Older in some ways, younger in others.

Specifically shaped by the people living in it.

He walked toward the ramen shop.

He'd looked up the location through the chat records.

Naruto mentioned it approximately every third message.

He passed the training ground.

He could see the split post from the street.

Three marks on it.

He knew all three.

He kept walking.

He was passing a woman with vegetables when she smiled at him and nodded.

He nodded back.

He wasn't sure if that was correct.

It seemed to satisfy her.

He passed a child chasing a dog.

He passed a man arguing with a vegetable vendor about the price of something.

He passed an old man sitting outside a building feeding birds.

He stopped.

He looked at the old man feeding birds.

He thought about he counts birds to be still.

He thought about the census.

He kept walking.

Ichiraku Ramen

Bai Yan saw him from three blocks away.

Not through the Anchor.

Just --- saw him.

The specific quality of Toneri's movement.

Someone who had spent twenty years in a space with no crowds learning to navigate a space full of them.

He set down the ladle.

He went to the front of the shop.

"Ayame."

She appeared.

He pointed.

She looked.

She went to the back and started a fresh pot.

Bai Yan straightened the counter.

Set out a menu.

Positioned the stool at the end where the light was best and the angle gave a view of the street.

He thought about start with the miso.

He thought about Naruto explaining ramen through chakra analogies.

He waited.

Toneri came through the shop entrance at seven fifty-three.

He stood in the doorway for a moment.

Looking at the counter.

The stools.

The steam from the kitchen.

Bai Yan was behind the counter.

They looked at each other.

"Bai Yan," Toneri said.

"Toneri," Bai Yan said. "Welcome."

He said it the way Teuchi said it.

Not formally.

Just --- you're welcome here.

Toneri sat at the stool at the end.

The one Bai Yan had positioned.

He looked at the menu.

"Naruto said to start with the miso," he said.

"Yes," Bai Yan said. "That's correct."

"He said I'd understand everything from there."

"Also correct." Bai Yan was already making it. "He's not wrong about ramen."

Toneri looked around the shop.

At the counter worn smooth by years of elbows.

At the pictures on the walls.

At the specific warmth of a place that had been doing the same thing well for a long time.

He thought about the Moon Temple.

He thought about what it would look like to a visitor.

He thought: probably similar.

A place doing the same thing well for a long time.

Different materials.

Different purpose.

Same structure.

The miso arrived.

He looked at it.

Steam rising from the bowl.

The smell of broth.

Noodles beneath the surface.

He picked up the chopsticks.

He tried them.

He'd read about chopsticks.

He managed adequately.

He took the first bite.

He sat with it for a moment.

"...Oh," he said.

"Yes," Bai Yan said.

"This is---"

"Yes."

"The broth."

"Ayame's recipe," Bai Yan said. "Teuchi's original. She's refined it."

Toneri ate in silence for a moment.

He thought about what Naruto had said.

The best versions have broth that took hours to make and the secret is you don't rush it.

He thought about the array.

About twenty years of maintenance.

About doing something carefully for a long time because it mattered.

He thought about how that tasted the same whether it was broth or sealing work.

"I understand the analogy now," he said.

"The ramen-as-Sage-Mode analogy?" Bai Yan said.

"All of them." He took another bite. "He wasn't just explaining Sage Mode. He was explaining a way of doing things."

"Yes," Bai Yan said.

"Taking time and attention and not rushing and letting the quality arrive at the edge."

"Yes."

"He applies it to everything."

"He does." Bai Yan refilled the water cup. "He learned it from his father. Who learned it in a different form."

Toneri was quiet.

He ate.

He sent a message.

Group Chat:

[Moon Temple (Toneri) @Naruto Uzumaki: I found the darker patch.]

Konoha --- Team 7's Training Ground

Naruto was mid-attempt.

Wind nature.

The sleeping bird on the low branch.

He felt the chat notification.

He held the clean form to completion.

He looked at the message.

I found the darker patch.

He stared at it.

He read it again.

"TONERI'S HERE!" he shouted to the training ground.

Sasuke looked up.

"What."

"TONERI! HE'S IN KONOHA! HE FOUND THE DARKER PATCH! HE'S AT ICHIRAKU---"

"How do you know he's at Ichiraku."

"WHERE ELSE WOULD HE BE?! HE'S NEW AND I TOLD HIM ABOUT THE MISO---"

He was already running.

"NARUTO." Sasuke said.

He stopped.

"You have a bruise from yesterday's session."

"IT'S FINE---"

"And you're in the middle of training."

"TONERI IS AT ICHIRAKU---"

"I know," Sasuke said. "I read the message." He picked up his bag. "I'm coming with you."

Naruto stared at him.

"You're---"

"He's part of the research group," Sasuke said. "It's practical to meet him in person."

"That's---you want to come."

"I want to confirm my in-person observation data matches the remote perception data."

"SASUKE."

"Let's go," Sasuke said.

He walked out of the training ground.

Naruto ran to catch up.

Ichiraku Ramen

Toneri had finished the miso and was on his second bowl when the footsteps came.

Two sets.

One loud.

One precise.

He looked at the entrance.

Naruto came through first.

Slightly out of breath.

Training clothes.

A developing bruise on his left arm.

He stopped in the doorway.

He looked at Toneri.

Toneri looked at him.

They'd seen each other before.

On the Moon.

In the array chamber.

But that had been in the context of the mission.

This was --- Ichiraku.

This was the miso bowl on the counter.

The steam from the kitchen.

The specific afternoon light that came through the shop's open front.

This was the thing Naruto had been protecting.

Naruto grinned.

The real one.

"You made it," he said.

Toneri looked at him.

At the grin.

At the training clothes.

At the bruise.

"Yes," he said.

"How's the miso?"

"...I understand the analogy," Toneri said.

Naruto's grin got bigger.

"Yeah," he said. "I told you."

He sat down at the counter.

Not at the far end.

Right next to Toneri.

Sasuke sat one stool over.

On the other side.

He looked at Toneri.

"The perception data from the activation," Sasuke said. "I have questions about the array's response to intention field changes."

Toneri blinked.

He looked at Sasuke.

Then at Naruto.

"He does that," Naruto said. "He starts with the research. He's like Tobirama but twelve."

"I'm not like---"

"You have the same energy," Naruto said. "Precise. Doesn't do small talk first."

"I do small talk."

"When?"

"...When it's warranted."

Toneri looked between them.

He was quiet for a moment.

He looked at Sasuke.

"The perception data," he said. "What specifically?"

Sasuke began explaining.

Toneri listened.

Naruto ordered his bowl and ate and listened to them talk.

He thought about the array chamber.

About we're not doing this alone anymore.

He thought about Toneri at the southern gate with his hand on the darker patch.

He thought about what it meant that Toneri had come.

He thought about the ramen shop.

The counter.

The seat.

He thought about how the specific things were always bigger than they looked.

Ayame appeared with a fresh pot.

Refilled Toneri's cup without being asked.

Toneri looked at the refilled cup.

He looked at Ayame.

"Thank you," he said.

"You're welcome," she said. Simply. The way she said everything important.

She went back to the kitchen.

Toneri sat with the fresh cup.

He thought about always room at the counter.

He thought about Naruto explaining ramen through chakra analogies.

He thought about how some things translated across any distance.

He picked up the chopsticks.

He had a second bowl to finish.

He had research questions with Sasuke to answer.

He had, apparently, an invitation to come back.

He thought that was enough.

He thought it was considerably more than enough.

He ate.

Group Chat:

[Moon Temple (Toneri): I'm at Ichiraku Ramen. The miso is as described.]

[Uzumaki Naruto: I'M RIGHT NEXT TO YOU]

[Moon Temple (Toneri): I know. I can see you.]

[Uzumaki Naruto: then why are you messaging me]

[Moon Temple (Toneri): ...It seemed appropriate to document.]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Toneri has arrived in Konoha and is at Ichiraku Ramen.]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: This is worth noting.]

[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: TONERI IS IN KONOHA!!]

[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: ON EARTH!!]

[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: AT A RAMEN SHOP!!]

[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: THIS IS WONDERFUL!!]

[Uchiha Madara: ...]

[Uchiha Madara: Welcome to Earth, Ōtsutsuki Toneri.]

[Moon Temple (Toneri): ...Thank you, Uchiha Madara.]

[Uchiha Madara: The ramen is better than it sounds. I've read enough of the chat to know this.]

[Moon Temple (Toneri): Yes. That's accurate.]

[Uchiha Madara: ...Good.]

[Uchiha Madara: Nine years and nine months and twenty-seven days remaining.]

[Moon Temple (Toneri): ...Until the rivals ranking?]

[Uchiha Madara: Yes.]

[Moon Temple (Toneri): You're tracking it.]

[Uchiha Madara: I'm monitoring the timeline.]

[Moon Temple (Toneri): I see.]

[Moon Temple (Toneri): I'll add it to my research notes.]

[Uchiha Madara: ...Good.]

[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: MADARA AND TONERI ARE TALKING!! THIS DAY KEEPS GETTING BETTER!!]

[Uchiha Madara: HASHIRAMA---]

Naruto read the exchange next to Toneri.

He looked at Toneri.

"Madara said welcome to Earth," he said.

"I read it," Toneri said.

"That's---"

"Significant," Toneri agreed.

"Yeah." Naruto looked at his bowl. "He's invested."

"In the rivals ranking?"

"In everything," Naruto said. "He counts down every morning. Izuna told us."

Toneri absorbed this.

He thought about Uchiha Madara.

Who had tried to use Kaguya's chakra as a tool.

Who had planned a war.

Who was now counting down to a rivals ranking involving two twelve-year-olds.

He thought about what the scroll had done.

He thought about the next chapter being everyone's.

"How's the research compilation going?" Naruto asked.

"Tobirama's organizational structure is efficient," Toneri said. "The data from the activation is more complete than I expected. Sasuke's perception records are particularly detailed."

"He documents everything," Naruto said.

"Yes. I've noticed." Toneri paused. "It's a good quality in a research collaborator."

Naruto looked at Sasuke, who was still writing data notes.

"Yeah," he said. "He's pretty good."

Sasuke didn't look up.

"I heard that," he said.

"I meant it as a compliment."

"I know."

"Does that feel different?" Naruto said. "When it's a compliment."

"...Marginally."

"THAT'S TOBIRAMA-SPEAK FOR YES---"

"That is not---"

Toneri watched this exchange.

He thought about twenty years of no one to talk to.

He thought about Bai Yan saying the Earth is louder than you expect. But you adjust.

He was adjusting.

He thought it was going to be fine.

He ate the last bite of his second bowl.

He set down the chopsticks.

He thought about the southern gate.

The darker patch.

His hand on the wood.

He thought about that's how you'll know you're actually there.

He thought about being actually there.

He was.
