Chapter 239 - Wind Nature, Week Two. The First Clean Form.

Konoha --- Team 7's Training Ground

Day twelve.

Seven-twenty in the morning.

Naruto was on attempt ninety-six.

He'd lost count of how many he'd done since Tobirama's reverse the terminal spiral correction.

He was tracking them anyway.

Not because he expected the numbers to matter.

Because Tobirama had said document everything and he'd been doing that.

Attempt ninety-six.

Entry angle decided before entering terminal stage.

Exit point defined.

Attention on the entry.

Precision developing at the edge.

He threw it.

The wind nature chakra moved.

He felt something different this time.

Not the familiar two-seconds-then-dispersal pattern.

It kept going.

Not wild.

Not unfocused.

Clean.

Like something that had been trying to find its shape for twelve days had finally found it.

He didn't notice at first because he was watching the entry angle.

That was the whole point.

Give the attention the small thing.

The precision arrived at the edge.

The clean form held.

He came back to himself and looked at the post.

There was a new mark on it.

Diagonal.

Sharp.

The kind of mark wind nature made when it actually worked.

Different from the Rasengan's split.

Different from the Chidori's burn marks on the other side.

This was his mark.

"That's it," Sasuke said.

Naruto turned.

Sasuke had been watching from his position across the ground.

The Sharingan's perception running.

He'd seen the intention field resolve two seconds before the technique landed.

He'd said nothing for those two seconds.

He'd waited for Naruto to see it himself.

Naruto looked at the mark.

He looked at his hand.

He said: "...oh."

Not loudly.

Not with the full-body excitement of his usual breakthroughs.

Just: oh.

The specific oh of something arriving that you'd been working toward for twelve days and had started to think you understood and now actually understood.

He stood with it for a moment.

He held the token.

The warmth was there.

He thought about how this was going to combine with the Rasengan eventually.

About the Rasenshuriken that didn't exist yet.

He thought about what twelve days of ninety-six attempts led to.

He thought about the census.

About patience and attention.

About giving the attention somewhere small.

He thought about Tobirama saying everything works better when it has a foundation.

He looked at the mark again.

"Sasuke," he said.

"Mm."

"Did you see it before it landed?"

"Two seconds before."

"What did it look like?"

Sasuke thought about how to describe it.

"The intention field resolved," he said. "The wind nature chakra stopped being a thing you were doing and became a thing that was happening." He paused. "It looked like--- like the technique knew where it was going."

Naruto held that.

"Because I decided first," he said.

"Yes."

"The whole time I was deciding in the middle of it," Naruto said. "Today I decided before."

"Yes."

Naruto looked at the mark on the post.

He thought about wind nature and Rasengan and the inward rotation and what Tobirama had said about the Rasenshuriken being the combination.

He thought about how far that was.

He thought about how far this morning was from attempt one.

"Okay," he said.

He gathered chakra for attempt ninety-seven.

"Document first," Sasuke said.

"Right---" He pulled out the log. "Hand position. Chakra entry. What did the perception see at the resolution point?"

"The terminal spiral completed at the entry angle rather than the exit," Sasuke said. "The exit became the result instead of the decision."

Naruto wrote this down.

"That's the difference," he said.

"Yes."

He finished the note.

He set up for ninety-seven.

"Again," he said.

He threw it.

The clean form held.

Slightly less clean than ninety-six.

Still clean.

"Good," Sasuke said.

"Not as clean."

"First clean attempts are always cleaner than the second. You're chasing ninety-six. Stop chasing it. Do the same thing you did."

Naruto thought about this.

"I'm thinking about it," he said.

"Yes."

"Which is the problem."

"Yes."

"So I should---"

"Stop thinking about it," Sasuke said. "Do the census if you need to."

Naruto looked at the birds.

There were four in the stand visible from here.

One asleep on the low branch.

He found the sleeping one.

Counted it.

He gathered chakra.

He threw attempt ninety-eight without thinking about attempt ninety-six.

It was cleaner than ninety-six.

Sasuke watched the intention field through the perception layer.

He didn't say anything for a moment.

"Better," he said.

"Yeah," Naruto said.

He was smiling now.

Not the performing grin.

The real one.

Slightly quieter than usual.

The specific smile of someone who has just understood that the thing they've been building is actually being built.

Jiraiya arrived at eight-fifteen.

He'd been in the Sage session stand doing his own work.

He had his notebook.

He walked into the training ground.

He saw the new mark on the post.

He stopped.

He looked at it for a long time.

He looked at the other marks.

The Rasengan fracture from the first secondary rotation attempt.

Clean split down the middle.

The Chidori burn mark on the far side.

Sasuke's from a session last week.

And now the diagonal wind nature mark.

Sharp.

Clean.

Three different techniques.

Three different people.

On the same post.

He looked at the marks for a while.

Naruto was setting up for attempt ninety-nine.

Sasuke was in his calibration position.

Neither of them was watching Jiraiya.

He opened the notebook.

He wrote something.

He closed it.

He stayed for an hour.

Watching without interrupting.

Making occasional notes.

Then he left.

Naruto looked up when he heard the footsteps going.

"Jiraiya-sensei?"

"Going back to my own work," Jiraiya said over his shoulder. "Keep going."

Naruto watched him leave.

He looked at Sasuke.

Sasuke was already back to his session.

"He was looking at the marks," Naruto said.

"Yes," Sasuke said.

"For a long time."

"Yes."

"He wrote something."

"Yes."

Naruto looked at the marks on the post.

He thought about what was written on them without words.

The split.

The burn.

The diagonal.

Three people.

One post.

Every morning.

He thought about what Jiraiya had written in the notebook.

He didn't ask.

He went back to training.

Group Chat:

[Uzumaki Naruto @Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Tobirama-sensei. Attempt 96. First clean form. I documented the hand position and entry point. Sending the log.]

He sent it.

A pause.

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: ...]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: The entry angle resolution you described. That's the mechanism I've been waiting to see confirmed.]

[Uzumaki Naruto: for the rasenshuriken?]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: For the next stage of wind nature development. The Rasenshuriken requires the clean form as a stable foundation. You've established that foundation.]

[Uzumaki Naruto: ...so i can start the next stage?]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Not immediately. The clean form needs to be reliable across varying conditions. Distraction. Fatigue. Combat pressure.]

[Uzumaki Naruto: how do i test that.]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: You continue the training under progressively difficult conditions.]

[Uzumaki Naruto: what kind of difficult conditions.]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Have Sasuke attack you while you attempt it.]

[Uzumaki Naruto: ...]

[Uzumaki Naruto: sasuke is going to enjoy that too much.]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Probably. The data will still be useful.]

[Uzumaki Naruto: sasuke.]

[Uchiha Sasuke: I read the message.]

[Uzumaki Naruto: tobirama-sensei says you get to attack me while i attempt wind nature.]

[Uchiha Sasuke: ...]

[Uchiha Sasuke: Starting tomorrow.]

[Uzumaki Naruto: you agreed too fast.]

[Uchiha Sasuke: This is valuable training.]

[Uzumaki Naruto: YOU AGREED TOO FAST---]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: The exercise will benefit both of you. Sasuke's precision work benefits from having to calibrate against a moving target.]

[Uchiha Sasuke: Yes. That's why I agreed.]

[Uzumaki Naruto: that's ALSO why you agreed.]

[Uchiha Sasuke: ...]

[Uchiha Sasuke: Tomorrow at six.]

[Uzumaki Naruto: i'm bringing defensive seals.]

[Uchiha Sasuke: Good. It'll make the data more interesting.]

[Uzumaki Naruto: SASUKE---]

Pure Land:

[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: HAHAHA!! SASUKE IS GOING TO ATTACK NARUTO FOR TRAINING PURPOSES AND IS VERY CALM ABOUT IT!! MADARA!! DID YOU SEE?!]

[Uchiha Madara: I see it.]

[Uchiha Madara: Nine years and ten months remaining.]

[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: HAHA!!]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: ...He's counting by months now.]

[Uchiha Izuna: He's been counting since yesterday. He updated when he woke up this morning.]

[Uchiha Madara: I'm tracking the timeline.]

[Uchiha Izuna: You woke up and immediately updated the countdown, Nii-san.]

[Uchiha Madara: ...]

[Uchiha Madara: I'm a strategic thinker. I track timelines.]

[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: YOU WOKE UP AND THOUGHT ABOUT NARUTO AND SASUKE'S RIVALS RANKING FIRST THING IN THE MORNING!!]

[Uchiha Madara: I think about MANY things first thing in the morning---]

[Uchiha Izuna: You said "nine years and ten months" before you said good morning to anyone.]

[Uchiha Madara: IZUNA.]

[Uchiha Izuna: It was the first thing you said today.]

[Uchiha Madara: ...]

[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: HAHAHAHA!!]

Jiraiya's notebook:

He'd written three things.

The first: Diagonal wind nature mark. Day twelve. Attempt 96. His mark on the post.

The second: Three marks now. Three people. One post. Every morning.

The third, below a gap he'd left for himself to think in:

That boy's father would have cried seeing this. So I'm doing it quietly for him.

He closed the notebook.

He put it in his coat.

He went to make tea.
