Without bathing, Riley Stones threw on her clothes as fast as she could. Worry sat heavy on her face as she moved around the room, trying not to think too hard about what was happening.
Her mind felt messy and rushed. She picked up her hairbrush and walked toward the sink, meaning to brush her teeth with it.
"That's not your toothbrush," Lilian said.
Riley hissed and threw the brush back on the bed. She changed her mind about brushing her teeth at all. The car that would take her to the Blackwood mansion was already waiting outside.
From the way Silas sounded on the phone, this felt like life and death.
"We'll talk later," Riley said as she hugged her friend, then rushed out of the room. She wore a big black shirt and blue jean trousers, not caring how she looked.
"Make sure you tell me everything when you get there," Lilian said as she followed her to the door.
Lilian opened it, and Riley stepped outside, walking straight into the Mercedes waiting for her.
