Chapter 17 - Chapter 17 - "Not again.."

Ren paused outside Kai's office having just returned from the company's beach trip, files clutched tightly to his chest. He could hear the low hum of the air conditioner and the faint click of Kai's keyboard, each sound sharpening the knot in his stomach. Taking a slow breath, he knocked lightly.

"Kai… you wanted these reports?" he asked, voice careful.

The door swung open almost immediately, and Kai's sharp gaze met his. His expression was… closed. Serious. Distant. Something in the set of his jaw made Ren hesitate before stepping inside.

"Yes. Leave them there," Kai said, gesturing toward the desk without looking up. His tone wasn't harsh, exactly—but it wasn't warm either.

Ren placed the files down carefully, watching Kai's fingers skim through them. There was a tension in the air that hadn't been there during the trip—the soft, teasing intimacy replaced by silent pressure.

"I… thought we could go over these together," Ren said softly, trying to bridge the growing distance.

Kai's eyes flicked up, sharp and controlled. "Now isn't a good time, Ren. I have other things to handle."

Ren froze. The words cut more sharply than he expected. "Other things…? You mean… work?"

Kai's gaze was steady, unflinching. "Yes. Work. Things that can't wait."

Ren's chest tightened, a mix of frustration and hurt rising in him. "So… what we had on the trip? That… doesn't matter anymore?"

Kai's jaw tightened. "Ren… don't make this about that. It's not fair. You know I care. But there are priorities here."

Ren swallowed hard, heat rising to his cheeks. "Priorities… always seem to come first with you."

Kai's fingers paused over the keyboard, tension visible in the set of his shoulders. "That's not fair either. You knew what my life is like when you… when you got involved."

Ren's hands curled into fists at his sides. "And I still got involved. But I didn't think it would feel like I'm constantly competing with… everything else."

Kai finally looked at him fully, eyes intense and unwavering. "Ren… it's not a competition. But I can't stop being who I am. I have responsibilities. And sometimes… that means I can't give you everything you want, even if I want to."

Ren's throat felt tight. "Then maybe I shouldn't have expected it."

Kai's voice softened, but it was firm. "Don't say that. You shouldn't have to expect less. You deserve… more than that."

Ren's chest ached. "Then why does it feel like I'm… always waiting?"

Kai took a deep breath, running a hand through his hair. "Because… we're trying to make this work in a world that doesn't stop for us. I don't want to hurt you, Ren. But I can't pretend things are simpler than they are."

Ren's eyes burned, frustration and emotion welling up. "You… keep telling me that, but it still hurts. Every time you're distant, every time work comes first, every time I feel like I'm… not enough."

Kai's expression faltered, and for a moment, he looked… unsure. "Ren, that's not true. You are enough. You're more than enough. It's me… it's me failing to balance it all."

Ren shook his head, tears pricking at his eyes. "It doesn't feel like it. And I can't just… ignore it. I can't keep pretending everything's fine when it isn't."

Kai's shoulders slumped slightly, and he closed his eyes, letting out a low sigh. "I know. I don't want this to hurt. I… I thought I was doing the right thing by trying to protect you. But I see now… I'm making it worse."

Ren's voice softened despite his own anger. "Kai… I don't want protection. I want… honesty. I want you, all of you. Even if it's messy, even if it's hard. That's what I… what I want."

Kai's eyes opened, shimmering slightly, and he took a step closer. "Ren…"

Ren backed up slightly, trembling, feeling the walls of the office closing in. "I can't do this if it's always going to be like this. I can't… keep feeling like I'm second place."

Kai's voice dropped, low and raw. "You're not second place. You're the only one I want. Always. But I… I can't stop the world from crashing in around us."

Ren swallowed hard, trying to fight the lump in his throat. "Then… maybe we need to figure out if we can actually make this work. Before it breaks us."

Kai reached out, hesitant, hand brushing against Ren's. "I don't want to lose you."

Ren's voice cracked slightly. "Then… don't let us get lost in the chaos."

Kai's fingers tightened around Ren's hand, a quiet plea. "I'll try. I promise. I'll try harder."

Ren stared at him, torn between frustration and longing. "You'd better," he muttered, voice trembling.

Kai leaned closer, voice soft but firm. "I will. I swear. But… I need you to be patient too. This isn't easy for me, Ren. You make everything harder—and better—at the same time."

Ren's eyes softened despite the ache in his chest. "I don't know if I can do it. But… I don't want to let go either."

Kai nodded, gaze intense, as if memorizing every flicker of emotion on Ren's face. "Then we'll hold on together. Step by step. But… we need to be honest, even when it hurts."

Ren let out a shaky breath, fists unclenching slightly. "Step by step," he repeated.

Kai's thumb brushed over his knuckles, slow and deliberate. "Exactly. Even if we fight, even if it's messy… we don't stop trying."

Ren bit his lip, nodding slowly, the tension in his chest easing just enough. "Even if it hurts?"

Kai's smile was small, almost apologetic. "Especially if it hurts. Because the only way we make it work is by facing it… together."

Ren felt tears prick at his eyes, a mix of frustration, fear, and longing. He wanted to yell, wanted to run, wanted to throw himself into Kai's arms all at once. Instead, he let the tension hang between them, heavy but intimate.

Kai squeezed his hand one last time before letting go, stepping back but keeping his gaze locked on Ren. "We can figure this out. I want us. No matter what it takes."

Ren nodded, trying to swallow the lump in his throat. "Okay. We'll try… together."

Kai gave a small, almost wry smile. "Good. But next time… no storms without warning."

Ren laughed softly, a brittle, shaky sound, the first real warmth in the room since the argument began. "I'll hold you to that too."

Kai's grin softened into something almost tender. "I wouldn't expect anything less."

By the end of the day, tension had eased, though the office air still buzzed with unresolved emotion. They sat across from each other at the hotel lounge, quiet and distant, but every brush of hands, every exchanged glance reminded them that the fire between them hadn't died. It was still there, smoldering—messy, complicated, but alive.

Ren finally whispered, voice soft, almost to himself: "I don't want this to break us."

Kai's hand found his under the table, fingers curling around his, warm and grounding. "It won't. Not if we hold on."

Ren exhaled slowly, the tension easing slightly. The fight hadn't ended, not really. It hadn't even fully begun—but the first step toward understanding, toward compromise, had been taken.

And despite the hurt, despite the chaos, despite the work and the mess of reality pressing in, Ren knew one thing: he couldn't let go. Not now. Not ever.
