Chapter 16 - Chapter 16 - "All couples bicker..right?"

Ren woke to the dull hum of his alarm and the low light spilling across the room, but today felt heavier. The hotel balcony framed a morning that should have felt golden and calm, but instead, Ren's chest tightened with anticipation he didn't quite understand. He rolled onto his side and looked toward Kai's room, just across the hall, remembering last night—the way Kai's hand had held his, the quiet press of lips against his temple, the soft promise in his gaze.

The memory made his heart flutter, but it also made him acutely aware that their stolen moments felt fragile. Something unspoken hovered between them: work, responsibility, the team, the constant whisper of the office waiting for them even here.

Shaking off the tension, Ren dressed quickly. He threw on a casual shirt and shorts, running a hand through his hair, trying to chase away the nervous edge. Breakfast had a different rhythm today—he found himself scanning the room before even sitting, half-expecting Kai to appear and sweep him into some spontaneous plan.

Kai did appear, of course. His hair was still slightly tousled, his sleeves rolled up in that way that made Ren's chest leap, but there was a shadow of seriousness behind his eyes today. Not bad, not unhappy, but different. Focused. Intense.

"You're up early," Kai murmured as he slid the chair beside Ren.

Ren smiled faintly. "I couldn't sleep in."

Kai nodded, quiet. "Good. I like mornings with you."

Ren's heart lifted, but a small tension prickled in the back of his mind. Something was different today.

The day's activities were meant to be light: team-building exercises, low-pressure competitions along the beach, and some free time. But today, Kai's phone kept buzzing, and he kept checking it, his brow furrowing slightly with each message.

Ren felt a pang in his chest—suddenly, the casual intimacy of the past two days felt fragile, almost unreal. He tried to focus on the sand under his feet, the gentle rhythm of waves, the laughter of coworkers, but Kai's attention drifting to his phone made Ren hyper-aware of the space between them.

Kai leaned close at one point, brushing fingers lightly along Ren's as he passed him a bottle of water. "Don't worry," he said softly. "Just… some work stuff."

Ren nodded, forcing a smile, but his stomach twisted. He wanted Kai's attention fully, even if it was selfish. Even if it was a little ridiculous.

By mid-morning, they were paired in a light relay race. Ren tried to focus on the game, but his mind kept drifting to Kai's quiet focus, the subtle tension in his shoulders, the way he'd sometimes glance down at his phone before forcing a smile back to him.

"Ren! Watch your step!" a coworker called, snapping him out of his thoughts just as he stumbled on the sand.

Kai was instantly there, steadying him with one hand at his back. "Careful," he murmured, close enough that Ren could feel the warmth radiating off him.

"I'm fine," Ren panted, though his thoughts had momentarily scattered.

"You almost fell," Kai said, voice soft but firm, eyes locking onto his. "Don't risk hurting yourself for anyone."

Ren blinked, heart thudding. "I… I'm not a child."

Kai chuckled lightly. "I know. But that doesn't mean I can't care."

Ren wanted to melt into him right there on the sand. The wave of warmth mixed with frustration—he didn't want Kai distracted by work, didn't want anyone to pull him away, didn't want to admit how much he needed this—needed Kai—right now.

After the race, free time arrived. Some employees wandered off to explore nearby shops, others lounged under umbrellas. Ren found himself walking along the shoreline again, waiting for Kai.

Kai appeared silently beside him, sliding a hand along Ren's back in a gesture that was both comforting and possessive. "Hey," he said softly.

"Hey," Ren replied, trying to keep his voice steady.

"You're quiet," Kai observed.

"I'm… thinking," Ren admitted, letting a hand brush against Kai's.

"About?"

Ren hesitated. "Yesterday, today… this," he murmured, motioning vaguely between them. "It feels… fragile sometimes. Like… one wrong move and…"

Kai stopped walking, turning to face him. His expression softened, eyes warm. "Ren… nothing can make this fragile if we don't let it. We just need… trust. And patience."

Ren swallowed, feeling the weight of that truth. "Patience. Right. Easy to say."

Kai chuckled softly. "Not easy for me either," he admitted. "But worth it. You're worth it."

Ren's chest swelled. "You… always say that."

"Because it's true," Kai said simply.

They walked in silence for a while, letting the ocean crash around them, letting the waves carry away the tiny cracks of doubt in Ren's mind. Every step, every shared glance, every accidental touch reminded him why this felt so impossible to resist.

Lunch was quiet, mostly spent in playful teasing and soft smiles. Kai leaned in across the table at one point, whispering, "You've got sand in your hair."

Ren groaned. "I'm not a child, Kai."

"You're my favorite child," Kai replied casually, brushing a strand of sand-laced hair from Ren's forehead.

Ren froze. "Favorite…?"

Kai shrugged, eyes mischievous. "Top of the list."

Ren laughed despite himself, but then noticed the faint crease between Kai's brows, the half-smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. Work messages on his phone again, unanswered, but lingering, pulling at him like an invisible tether.

Ren's stomach twisted again. The day that had started so light now felt heavier. The playful bubble of the last two days felt like it could pop at any moment.

After lunch, the resort suggested a quiet kayaking trip along the bay. Ren and Kai were paired, and for a while, the world felt small, contained, just the two of them and the gentle sway of the water beneath the boat.

Ren concentrated on paddling, trying not to notice how close Kai was, how easy it was to reach across and brush their hands together. He tried not to let the warmth of Kai's hand against his own set his nerves alight.

Kai leaned closer at one point, brushing Ren's hair back from his forehead. "You're tense," he observed.

Ren huffed. "I'm not tense."

Kai's eyes softened. "Yes, you are. I can feel it."

Ren looked away, suddenly aware of the ache in his chest, the frustration in his own thoughts. "It's… nothing," he muttered.

Kai didn't reply immediately. He just let their hands brush again, gentle and deliberate. "Ren," he said quietly, voice firm but soft. "We can let work stay at the office. You and I… we have this. Right now. Just this."

Ren's chest tightened, warmth spreading through him like a quiet fire. He finally met Kai's gaze. "Right now," he repeated softly.

Kai smiled faintly. "Exactly. That's all we need."

The tension in Ren's chest eased slightly, replaced by the familiar warmth, the delicate pull of Kai's attention, the quiet promise in the way their hands remained linked.

Evening rolled in, and the resort organized a small bonfire on the beach. Lanterns swayed in the night breeze, and the sound of the ocean mingled with the crackle of flames. Ren and Kai sat close together, shoulders brushing, occasionally leaning into each other in a comfortable intimacy that felt entirely new.

"You're quiet again," Kai said softly.

Ren shrugged, chewing on a piece of roasted marshmallow. "I'm… thinking."

"About?"

Ren hesitated. "About… this. About us. About how quickly everything feels… like it could vanish."

Kai's arm draped lightly around him, protective, grounding. "Ren… nothing will vanish if we hold onto it. We just have to keep walking carefully. Together."

Ren leaned into the warmth of Kai's arm, letting the comfort wash over him. "Together," he echoed.

Kai's fingers brushed lightly against his hand, thumb caressing the back. "Step by step," he murmured.

Ren smiled faintly. "Step by step," he repeated.

They stayed like that for a long time, listening to the ocean, watching the fire, letting the quiet intimacy of the night settle around them. It was peaceful, comforting, and entirely filled with possibility.

Later, as they walked back to the hotel, their hands brushing with the gentle promise of more, Kai whispered softly, "Tomorrow… work calls, responsibilities, everything. But tonight… tonight is ours. Just us."

Ren's chest lifted, feeling lighter. "I… I like that."

Kai's thumb brushed over his hand. "Me too. Very much."

Ren laughed softly. "You're full of promises."

"I plan to keep them," Kai replied quietly.

Ren's heart swelled. "Then… I'll hold you to that."

Kai smiled faintly, intimate and sure. "Good. That's the plan."

They reached the hotel balcony, paused before their rooms, and for a moment, just breathed. Kai's gaze lingered on him, soft and certain.

"Goodnight," Kai murmured.

"Goodnight," Ren replied, cheeks warm.

Kai leaned slightly, brushing his lips against Ren's temple. "Sleep well. Think of me."

Ren's heart clenched in the quietest, sweetest way. "Always."

Kai smiled, stepping back. "Then we're all set."

Ren watched him disappear inside, the faint echo of the day lingering, heart pounding. The ocean whispered beside him, steady and eternal, as if it knew the future was uncertain but held promise nonetheless.
