Chapter 20 - "When did I realise?"

For the first time in years, Kai's shoulders weren't curled up near his ears anymore.

It didn't happen all at once—more like tiny moments that kept building. Ren brushing Kai's hair back from his forehead when he was stressed. Ren quietly covering Kai with a blanket when he fell asleep on the couch. Ren pulling him into those slow, grounding hugs where Kai could feel his whole chest unclench, second by second.

And after that horrible "dinner" with his father—after Ren literally stepped in front of Kai and shielded him, after Kai realized he didn't have to face anything alone anymore—something inside him finally loosened.

One night, Kai was sitting on the edge of Ren's bed, legs curled up, wearing one of Ren's hoodies because he claimed it was warm but actually he just liked how it smelled. Ren came in with two mugs of hot chocolate, set them down, and sat beside him.

Kai leaned against Ren's shoulder.

Not stiffly. Not cautiously.

Just… naturally.

Ren didn't move. Didn't push. Didn't ask. He just let Kai rest there, sliding an arm around him with a gentleness that felt like safety in physical form.

Kai sighed—one of those long sighs that deflates months of tension.Ren glanced at him. "Bad day?"

Kai shook his head. "Not bad. Just… tired. But not the usual tired."

"How's it different?"

Kai's hand found Ren's shirt, lightly tugging the fabric. "Because I'm not tired alone."

Ren didn't say anything for a moment. He just pulled Kai closer, chin resting lightly on Kai's hair.

Kai felt it then—really felt it—how safe Ren was.

How safe he was.

The feeling almost scared him, but in a warm way, like realizing a storm you've lived in for years finally stopped and you're standing in quiet sunlight for the first time.

Kai spoke into Ren's chest, voice soft, honest, completely unguarded.

"I don't think I've ever relaxed like this before."

Ren tightened his hold just slightly. "Then stay like this as long as you want."

Kai nodded, eyes fluttering shut. For once, he didn't have to pretend. He didn't have to be defensive. He didn't have to brace for anything.

He could just be.

And Ren made that feel… easy.
