Chapter 12 - "Plus Ultra"
The tests began immediately.
Aizawa split the class into groups, rotating through each station. Rei's group started with the 50-Meter dash.
"Two at a time," Aizawa announced. "I'll record your times. Use your Quirks however you want."
The first pair stepped up—Iida and a girl with an invisibility Quirk, Hagakure.
"On your mark," Aizawa said flatly. "Go."
Iida's engines roared to life, and he shot forward like a bullet, crossing the finish line in 3.04 seconds.
'Fast,' Rei noted. 'Insanely fast. That's Olympic sprinter level with a Quirk boost.'
Hagakure finished at 5.93 seconds—respectable for someone whose Quirk didn't enhance speed.
Next up were Ashido and Aoyama. Ashido used her acid to create a slippery surface and slid across—6.12 seconds. Aoyama used his Naval Laser for thrust—5.51 seconds.
Then it was Rei's turn, paired up with Ojiro, a guy with a tail.
Rei stepped up to the starting line, taking a breath.
'Alright. 50 meters. How do I maximize this with my Quirk?'
He could web-sling, but there weren't any tall structures here—just open field. Running straight with enhanced speed was an option, but not the most efficient.
'Wait.'
An idea formed.
Rei crouched low, coiling his legs like springs.
"Go!"
Rei exploded forward, his enhanced leg strength launching him in a low, powerful leap. He fired webbing at the ground ahead mid-jump, using it to pull himself forward with even more momentum.
Jump, web-pull, land, jump, web-pull, land.
He covered the 50 meters in massive bounds, each one eating up distance with brutal efficiency.
The timer beeped.
3.89 seconds
'Not bad,' Rei thought, landing smoothly. 'Not as fast as Iida, but solid.'
Ojiro finished at 5.49 seconds using his tail for balance and propulsion.
Aizawa noted the times without comment and moved them to the next station.
---
Next was grip strength.
A simple test—squeeze a device as hard as you can.
Students went one by one. Most scored in the 50-70 kilogram range. Midoriya, who looked nervous as hell, scored 56 kg.
Then Shoji, a guy with multiple arms, scored 540 kg by using all six arms at once.
The class reacted with shock.
Rei stepped up when his turn came, gripping the device with one hand.
He squeezed.
The device beeped.
89 kg.
'Enhanced strength,' Rei noted. 'Better than average, but nowhere near the mutation-type Quirks. That's fine. I'm not trying to win every event.'
What mattered was overall placement. Staying out of last.
---
The tests continued.
Standing long jump: Rei used his leg strength to clear the entire sandbox in one leap, landing well beyond the normal human range. Bakugo blew himself across with explosions. Uraraka made herself weightless and floated across.
Sustained sideways jumps: Rei's enhanced agility and reflexes made this easy—he racked up an absurd number of repetitions in the time limit, his body moving almost on autopilot.
Seated toe-touch: Flexibility wasn't his strongest area, but his training had kept him limber. He scored well enough.
Sit-ups: Enhanced core strength meant he could do sit-ups for days. He maxed out the counter before time ran out.
Throughout all of this, Rei kept one eye on the rest of the class.
Bakugo was dominating most events with raw power and aggression.
Todoroki was quietly demolishing records with his ice and fire combination.
Midoriya... was struggling. Hard.
Every test, he looked more and more panicked. His scores were average at best—sometimes below average. And Rei knew why.
'He can't control One For All yet,' Rei realized, watching Midoriya barely manage a normal grip strength result. 'He's too scared to use it because he'll destroy his body. So he's forced to compete Quirkless.'
'He's going to place last if he doesn't do something.'
But Rei couldn't help him. Not directly. This was Midoriya's test. His trial.
---
Finally, they reached the last test.
Ball throw.
The same one Bakugo had demonstrated earlier.
One by one, students took their turns.
Uraraka made the ball weightless and it floated into infinity—marked as INFINITY on Aizawa's device.
Bakugo threw another explosive fastball—705.2 meters again, consistent.
Todoroki created an ice ramp and launched the ball with precision—697 meters.
When Rei's turn came, he stepped into the circle, ball in hand.
'Alright,' he thought. 'How do I maximize this?'
He couldn't make it weightless. Couldn't explode it. Couldn't freeze it.
But he had webs. And enhanced strength.
Rei wound up, and mid-throw, fired a web line attached to the ball. As the ball left his hand, he yanked the web with all his strength, adding extra velocity.
The ball rocketed forward, the web propelling it even further before dissolving.
Aizawa's device beeped.
487.3 meters.
'Not the highest,' Rei noted. 'But respectable.'
Some classmates looked impressed. Others didn't seem to notice, too focused on their own performances.
Then came Midoriya's turn.
The entire class watched as the green-haired kid stepped into the circle, looking more nervous than anyone had all day.
He wound up and threw.
The ball landed with a pathetic thud.
46 meters.
Barely better than a middle schooler.
Aizawa's expression didn't change, but Rei could see the gears turning in his head.
'He knows something's up,' Rei thought. 'Midoriya scored high enough in the entrance exam to get in. There's no way his Quirk is this weak.'
"Midoriya," Aizawa called out. "You're not using your Quirk. Why?"
Midoriya flinched. "I... I am! I just—"
"Try again." Aizawa tossed him another ball. "And this time, use your Quirk properly. You're wasting everyone's time."
Midoriya caught the ball, hands shaking.
Rei watched carefully.
'This is the moment,' he thought. 'This is where Midoriya realizes he can't avoid it anymore.'
Midoriya wound up again, and this time, Rei saw it—the faint glow of power gathering in his arm.
One For All.
He threw.
The ball exploded forward with a shockwave that shook the field, disappearing into the sky.
Aizawa's device lit up.
705.3 meters.
Exactly one-tenth of a meter more than Bakugo's throw.
The class erupted in shocked reactions.
But Rei wasn't looking at the score. He was looking at Midoriya's finger.
Broken. Swollen. Purple.
'He focused all of One For All into just his fingertip,' Rei realized. 'Minimized the damage to one finger so he could still function. Smart. Desperate, but smart.'
Aizawa stared at Midoriya for a long moment, then simply said, "Good. Next."
But Bakugo wasn't having it.
"OI, DEKU!" Bakugo's voice cut through the field like a blade. "WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?! SINCE WHEN DID YOU HAVE A QUIRK?!"
He started storming toward Midoriya, explosions crackling in his palms.
"YOU'VE BEEN LYING THIS WHOLE TIME—"
Aizawa's capture weapon shot out, wrapping around Bakugo and stopping him mid-charge.
"That's enough," Aizawa said, his eyes glowing red—Erasure activated. "Use your Quirk on a classmate outside of combat training, and you're expelled. Understood?"
Bakugo struggled for a second, then went still, glaring murder at Midoriya.
"Understood," he growled.
Aizawa released him and deactivated his Quirk. "We're wasting time. Everyone line up. I'm announcing the results."
---
The class gathered in front of Aizawa as he pulled up the ranking on his device.
"These are your total scores across all eight tests," Aizawa announced. "I've ranked you from first to last."
A hologram appeared, showing the rankings:
1. Momo Yaoyorozu
2. Shoto Todoroki
3. Katsuki Bakugo
4. Tenya Iida
5. Fumikage Tokoyami
6. Mezo Shoji
7. Mashirao Ojiro
8. Eijiro Kirishima
9. Mina Ashido
10. Ochaco Uraraka
11. Koji Koda
12. Rikido Sato
13. Kyoka Jiro
14. Denki Kaminari
15. Rei Mizuki
16. Hanta Sero
17. Toru Hagakure
18. Yuga Aoyama
19. Tsuyu Asui
20. Minoru Mineta
21. Izuku Midoriya
Rei stared at his placement.
'15th,' he thought. 'Middle of the pack. Exactly where I wanted to be.'
Not high enough to draw too much attention. Not low enough to seem weak.
Perfect.
Midoriya, predictably, was dead last. 21st place. His broken finger and inability to use his Quirk for most tests had tanked his score.
'So that's it,' Rei thought. 'Aizawa's going to expel him, and—'
"Oh, by the way," Aizawa said, his tired expression shifting to something almost amused. "The expulsion was a lie. A logical ruse to make sure you gave it your all."
The class exploded.
"WHAT?!"
"YOU'VE GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!"
"I ALMOST HAD A HEART ATTACK!"
Aizawa smirked. "Of course it was a lie. It should've been obvious if you thought about it rationally."
Yaoyorozu nodded knowingly. "I figured as much."
'She's the only one,' Rei thought, slightly amused. 'Everyone else bought it completely.'
"That's all for today," Aizawa said, already turning to leave. "There are handouts about your curriculum and such in the classroom. Give them a look. Dismissed."
And just like that, he walked away, leaving the class standing there in stunned silence.
---
Slowly, students started heading back to the locker rooms, the tension finally breaking.
Rei walked quietly, processing everything.
'15th place. Not bad for day one. Showed enough skill to be taken seriously, but didn't overshadow the top performers.'
'Midoriya survived the expulsion threat—barely. Bakugo's suspicious of him now. Todoroki and Yaoyorozu are the clear top dogs.'
'Everything's on track.'
As he changed back into his school uniform, Rei overheard conversations around him.
"Dude, that was insane!"
"I thought I was getting expelled for sure!"
"Bakugo's scary, man. Did you see him go after Midoriya?"
"Todoroki barely tried and still placed second. That guy's on another level."
Rei tuned them out, grabbed his bag, and headed back to the classroom.
The first day of UA was almost over.
And he'd survived it without standing out too much.
'Good start,' Rei thought. 'Now let's see what tomorrow brings.'
