Chapter 8 - The Spark Before Dawn

By morning, the storm had passed, but the tension in the air hadn't.

The academy's halls buzzed with whispers — rumors of last night's energy surge spreading like wildfire. Some said a rift had nearly reopened. Others swore they'd seen lights above the dorms, flickering like souls caught between worlds.

Ira walked through the main hall in silence. His uniform collar was loose, and his eyes, half-shadowed by fatigue, scanned the students gathered in small, gossiping clusters. Every whisper seemed to follow him.

"Did you hear? He was there when the barrier flickered."

"They say his mark glows on its own."

"Maybe he's the cause of all this…"

He ignored them. Words were just noise — and he'd learned long ago that silence was the best armor.

Elara caught up with him near the training wing. "They're talking again," she said, falling into step beside him.

"They always talk."

She studied his face, searching for something in his expression. "You didn't sleep."

"Did you?"

A small pause. "…No."

They reached the door to the Arcane Combat Chamber. The heavy steel doors hissed open, revealing a wide circular room lined with runes and glowing glyphs. Inside, the senior instructor, Master Kael, stood waiting with his usual stern gaze.

"Ira, Elara," Kael said. "Good. You're early."

He motioned toward the center of the chamber, where mana seals pulsed under the floor.

"Today's session will test synchronization. You two are… special cases. That bond of yours could be a weapon — or a disaster. Let's find out which."

Elara exchanged a quick glance with Ira. "We're ready," she said, though her voice trembled slightly.

Kael smiled thinly. "We'll see."

---

As the chamber seals activated, the air shimmered with pressure. Blue sparks arced between the runes, humming with restrained power.

Ira and Elara took their positions.

"Focus," Kael commanded. "Match your breathing. Align your mana flow."

Their marks began to glow — faintly at first, then brighter, until thin threads of light stretched between their hands.

Elara's heart raced. "It feels… stronger this time."

"Because the bond is responding to your emotions," Kael said. "Control it — or it will control you."

The ground beneath them shifted, and suddenly, three energy constructs materialized from the runes — training golems made of hardened mana, eyes glowing with crimson light.

"Begin!" Kael shouted.

The first golem lunged forward, fist swinging like a hammer. Ira blocked with a mana barrier, the force cracking the floor beneath him. Elara followed instantly, thrusting her hand out; light spiraled from her palm, slicing through the air and striking the second golem's chest.

It staggered — but not for long.

The third golem circled fast, attacking from behind. Ira turned just in time, summoning a surge of energy that roared from his hand like blue flame. The blast shattered the construct completely — but it also sent a shockwave through the chamber.

Elara gasped as the energy hit her, knocking her backward. The thread of light between them flickered violently.

Kael's voice thundered. "Control it! Your power must flow together — not against each other!"

Ira clenched his fists, breathing hard. "I'm trying—"

The bond pulsed again. Suddenly, his heartbeat synced with hers — faster, louder. Their auras merged, filling the chamber with blinding light.

Elara's voice echoed in his mind.

Ira… I can feel you.

Then stay close, he thought.

The remaining golem charged. Together, they moved — one thought, one motion. Ira's power burst outward like a shield, while Elara's energy shaped into crystalline blades that danced through the air.

The golem exploded in a flash of blue and white. When the light faded, nothing was left but dust and crackling mana.

Kael stared silently, the rune lights dimming. "Impressive," he said finally. "But unstable. If your synchronization fails mid-battle, you'll destroy yourselves before your enemy can."

Ira and Elara exchanged a glance — their marks still glowing faintly, hearts still racing in sync.

"We'll master it," Ira said quietly. "No matter what it takes."

Kael nodded slowly, almost approvingly. "Then you'd better hurry. The headmistress wants to see you both. Now."

---

Outside the chamber, Elara exhaled shakily. "We really could've blown up half the arena."

"Almost did," Ira said, lips twitching slightly.

Despite everything, she smiled. "You smiled. That's progress."

He didn't deny it this time. "Don't get used to it."

As they walked toward the headmistress's tower, the hallway lights flickered again — just like the night of the rift.

Elara frowned. "Did you feel that?"

Ira nodded. "Yeah. The rift's not done with us yet."

And somewhere, deep below the academy, something old stirred awake — drawn to the light of the bond.
