Chapter 14 - Secrets of the Fifth Bond

The convoy arrived back at the academy before sunrise.

Everyone was quiet. The air was heavy with dust and exhaustion.

Ira stepped out of the transport and looked up at the sky — the faint glow of Valenreach still shimmered far away, like lightning trapped in the clouds.

Elara walked beside him, arms crossed. "Do you think the city will calm down?"

"I don't know," Ira said. "But something tells me this isn't over."

They didn't have long to rest. Within minutes, a messenger ran up to them.

"The Headmaster wants to see you both. Immediately."

---

The Headmaster's office was wide and dim, filled with books, maps, and faintly glowing orbs.

Headmaster Orien stood by the window, his hands clasped behind his back. His white robes shimmered faintly with runes that pulsed like breathing light.

He didn't turn as they entered. "You touched the Rift Core."

Neither of them spoke.

Orien finally turned, his sharp eyes landing on Ira. "And it responded to you."

Ira nodded slowly. "It called me the successor of something — the Fifth Bond."

The Headmaster's expression darkened. "Then it's true."

Elara frowned. "What is the Fifth Bond?"

Orien moved toward a table covered in old scrolls and set down a cracked crystal tablet.

He touched its surface, and an image flickered to life — six glowing symbols, each shaped like a pair of linked circles. Five of them were faded. Only the last one pulsed weakly.

"The Bonds," Orien began, "were connections between chosen wielders of Aether. Each pair shared their strength and life. The Fifth was the strongest — but also the most dangerous."

Elara leaned forward. "Why dangerous?"

"The power they shared didn't have limits," he said quietly. "When one lost control, both fell. The last known holders of the Fifth Bond were a warrior named Kairn and a seer named Lyra."

Ira's eyes widened slightly. "Lyra… the spirit we saw in the ruins."

Orien nodded. "She died protecting the world from the first Rift collapse. The man she was bonded with—Kairn—vanished. No one knew what became of him."

Elara looked at Ira. "And now you carry that same bond."

Orien's voice softened. "The mark on your hand is proof. It's the same symbol Kairn bore. You were chosen long before you arrived here."

Ira looked down at the faint glow under his skin. It pulsed once — like a quiet heartbeat.

He swallowed hard. "So… this power—it's not mine?"

Orien shook his head. "It's borrowed. But that doesn't make it any less real."

Elara frowned. "What happens if the bond breaks again?"

The Headmaster sighed. "If history repeats… it could destroy everything near you. The Fifth Bond connects directly to the Rift Core. If it shatters, so will the seal that keeps our world safe."

Silence filled the room.

Finally, Ira spoke. "Then I'll make sure it doesn't break."

Orien smiled faintly — tired, but proud. "I believe you will try. But you can't face this alone."

He turned to Elara. "You are his counterpart now. You share his energy, his strength — and his risk. Protect one another, or neither will survive."

Elara nodded. "I understand."

The Headmaster placed a small silver pendant on the table. "Take this. It's called a Sync Charm. It will help you stabilize your bond. Wear it when you train."

Ira picked it up. The pendant was warm, as if alive.

"Thank you," he said quietly.

Orien stepped back. "You both need rest. Tomorrow, we begin the real training. The Rift is waking, and others have felt it too."

"Others?" Elara asked.

The Headmaster's eyes grew cold. "There are those who seek to control the Rift's power — people who will stop at nothing to claim it. They will come for you, Ira."

Ira clenched his fists. "Then let them."

---

Outside, the morning sun broke through the clouds. Students moved through the courtyards, unaware of the storm building beneath their world.

Elara walked beside him, glancing up. "You know… you're terrible at staying out of trouble."

He smiled slightly. "You knew that when you met me."

She grinned. "Yeah. Guess I did."

For a moment, the world felt normal again.

But deep within the earth — far below Valenreach — something stirred. The broken fragments of the Core pulsed once more, and a shadow moved through the cracks of light.

Its voice echoed faintly:

"The bond returns… and so shall I."
