Chapter 10 - The Night Before Dawn

The academy felt different that night.

Quieter.

Heavier.

The wind drifted through the empty courtyards, carrying the scent of old stone and distant rain. The moon hung pale over the training fields, casting long silver shadows across the cobblestones and reflecting off the crystal spires.

Ira stood alone in the armory, his hands steady but his mind restless. He tightened the straps of his gear—worn leather, scarred from countless battles and long nights of training. His reflection in the steel locker door stared back—tired eyes framed by faint scars, the faint glow of the bond mark just visible beneath his collarbone.

Lyra's words echoed in his mind: If you can't control it… it will consume you.

His fingers paused mid-motion. For a moment, he thought he saw movement in the reflection—a faint outline behind him. Long hair that shimmered like moonlight, eyes soft but filled with sorrow.

Lyss.

He spun around swiftly.

No one was there.

The silence pressed in around him, heavier this time, wrapping tight like a shroud. He closed his eyes and whispered, "You're not her. Not anymore."

The mark pulsed once—a quiet, steady heartbeat responding.

---

A soft knock broke the stillness.

Elara stepped inside, her presence gentle but unmistakable. She wore her travel uniform—dark leather trimmed with silver runes that caught the dim light, her white hair pulled back into a tight braid. Nervous energy seemed to ripple just beneath her calm exterior.

"You're still awake," she said quietly.

"Couldn't sleep," Ira replied, his voice low.

She smiled faintly, stepping closer. "Everything ready?"

"As ready as it'll ever be."

Elara hesitated, then added, "They say Valenreach still echoes with rift energy. That the very air hums there—like the world is watching and waiting."

He looked at her, steady and sure. "We'll handle it. Together."

Her smile softened, but there was sadness lingering in her eyes. "You always say that like it's a promise."

"It is."

The space between them stretched, filled with unspoken fears and fragile hope.

Finally, Elara's voice dropped to a whisper. "Ira, whatever happens out there… I need you to trust me. If the bond starts reacting again, don't push me away."

He met her gaze, the tension in his chest loosening just a little. "I'll try."

"Good."

She turned to leave but paused at the door, looking back with a faint grin. "And Ira?"

"Yeah?"

"Don't die tomorrow. It'd make me look bad."

He let out a quiet laugh, the first in days. "Can't promise that."

She rolled her eyes playfully and disappeared down the corridor.

---

When the door shut, the armory felt colder.

Ira looked down at his hands—the faint glow of the bond mark pulsing softly in rhythm with his heartbeat.

He whispered into the heavy silence,

"Lyss… if you're still in there… don't let me lose her too."

The mark glimmered once more, a soft blue light against the dark.

Outside, distant thunder rolled, low and slow—a promise of the storm to come.
