Chapter 6 - Whispers Beneath the Moon

The night breeze carried the scent of rain.

Ira sat atop the dorm roof, staring at the moonlit courtyard below. The academy lights flickered faintly—ever since the rift, something had changed. The air itself felt heavier, charged with whispers of power and fear.

He leaned back, the cool tiles beneath him slick with dew. Each breath came out as a thin mist, fading into the vast, starless sky. The academy was silent now—no voices, no footsteps, just the low hum of the mana barriers pulsing faintly in the distance.

Footsteps sounded behind him. Light, careful.

"You always find the quietest places," Elara said, climbing up beside him. The moonlight caught in her white hair, turning it silver.

He didn't look at her. "It's easier to think when no one's talking."

"Then I'll talk quietly," she teased.

He almost smiled, but his eyes stayed fixed on the dark horizon. The silence between them wasn't empty—it was alive, filled with things neither of them dared to say.

Minutes passed. The soft wind carried the faint rustle of leaves and the far-off clang of the academy's night patrols.

When Elara finally spoke again, her tone was different—gentler, and unsure.

"When the bond activated in the arena… I felt everything. Your fear, your pain. Even your anger."

He turned toward her slowly. "You shouldn't have felt that."

"But I did," she said softly. "And it wasn't just anger. You were afraid of losing control."

He looked away. His jaw tightened, eyes darkening as memories flickered—blood, shattered glass, and a voice that wasn't hers crying out his name. The kind of memory that burned too deep to fade.

"I don't want to hurt anyone again."

Again.

The word hung between them like fog, heavy and cold.

Elara studied him quietly. "You've been through something, haven't you?"

Ira didn't answer at first. His hands trembled slightly, and for a moment, the mark on his arm pulsed faintly, as if echoing the turmoil within.

Finally, he spoke—his voice low, rough at the edges.

"There was someone before you. Another bond." He paused, the wind catching his words. "It broke… and she didn't survive."

Elara's breath caught, her eyes widening. The confession struck like lightning—soft but powerful. She could almost feel the weight of his guilt pressing on the air around them.

He stood up, turning away from her. His shadow stretched long across the rooftop, the moon behind him like a silent witness.

"That's why I can't let this bond control us," he said quietly. "I won't make the same mistake."

Elara rose too. For a moment, she hesitated, then stepped closer until the wind between them slowed. "Then let's control it together."

The mark on her hand glowed softly, answering his. The faint blue and white lights pulsed in harmony, merging in a slow rhythm that painted the night air with warmth.

For the first time, he didn't look away. His gaze held hers—calm, uncertain, but no longer afraid.

The clouds shifted, letting the full moon spill silver light over them both. The world below seemed distant—just two figures standing on a rooftop, bound by something neither of them fully understood, yet unwilling to let go.

In that moment, the air felt alive again. Not with danger—but with possibility.

Somewhere far beyond the dorms, a faint rumble echoed through the night. Thunder—or something else stirring within the rift.

But for now, they stood in silence, side by side.

The storm could wait.
