Viona's POV
Someone could die instantly if they got pushed from this penthouse on the 99th floor right? Just standing this close to the glass already made my stomach turn and my head start to spin.
I suddenly regretted telling Jane to wait in the lobby. Coming up here alone felt dumber by the second. My eyes caught the glass door at the far end that led out to the balcony. As long as that door stayed shut, I told myself, everything should be fine.
"Why are you standing there?"
A soft, weathered voice made me turn. Veronica Delano stood on the steps that separated the living room from the open kitchen. Elegant as always in a white high-collared dress, arms crossed, watching me like she had already decided how this would end.
"Measuring the height," I said, keeping my voice flat. "Trying to convince myself gravity might not work this far up."
She let out a soft, breathy chuckle and came down the last few steps, heading for the velvet sofa that faced the glass wall where I stood.
