Chapter 58 - Chapter 51: Old Bear's Compromise

"Nonsense!"

Alliser Thorne was the first to break the silence.

He stepped out from the crowd, his face displaying undisguised mockery and hostility.

"Lynn, who do you think you are? The Lord Commander?"

"Burn the bodies of our brothers?"

"This is the most absurd and malicious suggestion I've ever heard!"

Thorne's words immediately resonated with the other Night's Watch members around him.

"Exactly! Othor and Jaremy are our brothers!"

"We cannot treat our brothers with the barbaric customs of the Wildling Tribe!"

"He's mad! He must have gone mad from killing Wildling Tribe members!"

Questions and curses rose and fell.

Those Night's Watch members who had just developed a sense of awe for Lynn now, because of these "treasonous" remarks, were once again filled with hostility towards Lynn.

Lynn ignored the noise.

His gaze remained fixed on Lord Commander Mormont.

He knew that here, only the Old Bear's words mattered.

"Lynn, give me a reason."

Lord Commander Mormont's voice was deep and authoritative.

He didn't directly dismiss Lynn like the others, but chose to give him a chance to explain.

This made Lynn's heart relax slightly.

"My Lord."

Lynn's gaze swept over the two bodies.

"Do you remember what I said before?"

"Beyond the Wall, the Others are awakening."

"Their eyes are like burning sapphires."

"They can make the dead rise again!"

Lynn's words once again quieted the courtyard's commotion.

Everyone was stunned.

Make the dead rise?

This sounded even more preposterous than burning the bodies of brothers.

"What nonsense are you spouting?"

Thorne sneered.

"Do you think this is an old story told to three-year-olds?"

"I'm not lying."

Lynn met Thorne's gaze, then turned to Lord Commander Mormont.

"My Lord, I found the same thing in the Wildling Tribe."

"Their eyes, they were exactly like Othor's and Jaremy's!"

Lord Commander Mormont's pupils suddenly constricted.

He recalled the scene described by the scout he sent to report after Lynn and his men had cleared out the Wildling Tribe.

White bodies, ice-blue eyes.

At the time, he had dismissed it as some rare phenomenon and hadn't paid too much attention.

But now, the same situation had appeared again.

Coincidence?

Once is a coincidence.

Twice... is it still a coincidence?

"Ghost!"

Jon Snow's exclamation drew everyone's attention.

His Direwolf, Ghost, suddenly broke free from his grasp and lunged towards the two sleds.

It didn't attack, it just stared intently at the two bodies, emitting continuous, threatening growls from its throat.

Its entire white fur stood on end, like a porcupine's quills.

It was an extreme vigilance shown only when facing a natural predator.

Arya's Nymeria was the same.

She tightly guarded Arya, baring her teeth towards the bodies and letting out warning growls.

Animals' instincts are far sharper than humans'.

They could sense the evil aura emanating from the two bodies.

The atmosphere in the courtyard grew eerie.

Everyone watched the two restless Direwolves, their hearts shadowed.

"Lord Commander."

Maester Aemon's aged voice slowly sounded.

Though he couldn't see, he could clearly feel the change in the surrounding atmosphere.

"Perhaps, we should be more cautious."

"At the very least, we should tie them up first."

Lord Commander Mormont's brows furrowed into a frown.

He looked at Lynn, then at the two Direwolves.

Finally, his gaze fell upon the two cold bodies.

Reason told him that Lynn's words were too incredible.

But intuition, the intuition of an old warrior, was warning him.

After a long while.

The Old Bear finally made a decision.

"Bring them inside."

His voice carried a hint of unshakeable weariness.

Lynn's heart sank sharply.

"But."

Lord Commander Mormont's tone shifted.

"Don't put them together."

He pointed to one of the bodies.

"Othor, send him to my room."

"I will watch him personally."

He then pointed to the other.

"Jaremy, send him to Aemon's quarters."

"Maester Aemon, examine him carefully for any abnormalities."

"Furthermore," Mormont's gaze swept across the courtyard, finally landing on Thorne's face.

"Tonight, everyone, keep your weapons on you."

"Double the patrol Guards."

This was a compromise.

He neither fully adopted Lynn's seemingly mad suggestion nor failed to take maximum precautions.

Thorne's face showed a look of disapproval, but he dared not disobey the Lord Commander's orders.

"Yes, Lord Commander."

Two Night's Watch members stepped forward, dragging the two sleds into the castle.

As the two bodies were dragged across the courtyard, a chilling gust of wind suddenly swirled up.

It made everyone's cloaks flap loudly.

Lynn watched the two bodies disappear behind the door, his hand on his sword hilt unconsciously tightening.

He knew the Old Bear had made the best choice he could.

After all, he was the Lord Commander and had to consider everyone's thoughts.

But, this was not enough.

Tonight, Castle Black was destined to be a sleepless night.

Lynn walked over to Jon and Arya.

"Stay with your Direwolves," Lynn's voice was very low.

"Tonight, they might save your lives."

Jon looked at Lynn in confusion, but still nodded.

Arya hugged Nymeria's neck tightly.

Lynn said no more.

He turned and quickly walked towards the barracks of his hundred Northmen Guards.

Since the Lord Commander didn't believe him.

Then he could only rely on himself.

He had to be fully prepared.
