Chapter 59 - Chapter 52 No one can sleep tonight!

Lynn did not return to his room.

He walked straight through the courtyard, which was in a state of panic due to the discovery of the bodies, heading towards the temporary barracks of his hundred Northern Guards.

Inside the barracks, Toren and several other squad leaders were distributing the evening meal: black bread and thin stew.

The soldiers gathered around the brazier, discussing in low voices what had happened during the day, their faces showing wariness of the unknown.

"My Lord!"

Seeing Lynn enter, everyone immediately stood up, their movements synchronized.

"All sit down."

Lynn waved his hand and walked directly to the center of the barracks.

"Brothers."

Lynn's gaze swept over each face, faces still bearing the marks of the wilderness and absolute trust in him.

"You all saw what happened during the day."

Lynn didn't beat around the bush.

"Those two bodies, I can guarantee, are definitely problematic."

The expressions on the soldiers' faces instantly turned serious.

The barracks fell silent, with only the crackling of burning wood in the brazier.

The soldiers looked at each other, confusion in their eyes, but more so a reverence for ancient legends stemming from their bloodline.

They were Northmen; they believed in the Old Gods, and they believed in magic.

"Tonight, we have work to do."

Lynn walked over to a simple map, a layout of Castle Black.

"Lord Commander Mormont has placed one body in his room."

"The other is in Maester Aemon's room."

Lynn's finger pointed to two locations on the map.

"Toren."

"Here, My Lord!"

"You take thirty brothers and guard outside Maester Aemon's door."

Lynn's tone was unquestionable.

"Remember, your mission is to protect Maester Aemon."

"He is old and cannot see, he must not be harmed in any way."

"Yes, My Lord!" Toren nodded heavily.

"Harvey." Lynn then turned to another squad leader.

"Here!"

"You take thirty brothers and guard outside the Lord Commander's room."

"Yes!"

"The rest of us, I will lead personally."

Lynn's gaze sharpened.

"Listen carefully to what I say next; this concerns all your lives."

Everyone held their breath.

"If, and I mean if."

Lynn said, enunciating each word.

"You see those bodies move."

"Do not try to stab their hearts with a sword, or cut off their heads. That won't work."

"Then… what should we do?"

A young Guards couldn't help but ask.

"Fire."

Lynn uttered a single word.

"Burn them with fire."

"Only fire can truly kill them."

"I don't care if you use torches, or charcoal from the fireplace, or directly set their clothes on fire."

"In short, before they get close to you, make them burn!"

"Do you all understand?"

"Understood!" A unified low roar echoed through the barracks.

"Very good." Lynn nodded.

"Now, everyone, check your weapons, and get the lamp oil and torches ready."

The soldiers immediately sprang into action.

They wiped their longswords, brought out jugs of lamp oil, and made simple torches from rags.

A tense and murderous atmosphere quickly permeated the barracks.

Lynn walked to the corner and picked up the valyrian steel dagger Ned had given him.

The cold dragonbone hilt strangely warmed to his touch.

He knew that ordinary flames might deal with wights, but their efficiency was too low.

And valyrian steel… a divine weapon rumored to be forged by dragonfire.

It had a natural restraint over these dark creatures.

He carefully tied the dagger to the inside of his calf, the most convenient and concealed position.

Having arranged everything, Lynn walked out of the barracks.

Night had completely enveloped Castle Black.

The cold wind howled on the castle walls, making a ghostly sound.

Most of the castle was dark, with only a few windows still glowing with dim yellow light.

Lynn's figure, like a ghost, silently merged into the darkness.

He did not go directly to Lord Commander Mormont's tower, but first circled around to Maester Aemon's vicinity.

Toren and his men were already in position.

They lurked like statues in the shadows of the corridor, their weapons and torches ready.

Lynn made a gesture to Toren, then turned and left.

He needed to confirm the situation on the other side.

The Lord Commander's tower was the tallest and most fortified building in all of Castle Black.

Mormont's room was on the top floor of the tower.

He arranged for the dead to be near him, not only out of trust in Lynn's judgment, but also because he suspected someone was trying to harm the two men, and he also had a motive of luring the snake out of its hole.

Lynn did not use the main entrance.

He circled to the back of the tower and, like a monkey, silently climbed onto the second-floor window ledge.

From here, he could clearly see the only staircase leading to the top-floor room.

Harvey and his men were also ambushed in the shadows of the stairwell.

Everything was going according to his plan.

Lynn leaned against the cold stone wall, regulating his breathing.

He looked up at the lit window on the top floor.

He knew that Lord Commander Mormont was inside at this moment.

Perhaps drinking, perhaps reading.

But he would never have imagined that sharing a room with him was a monster about to bring death and terror.

Lynn's hand gently pressed on the dagger on his calf.

Now, all he had to do was wait.
