Chapter 102 - Chapter 102: Enrage (Part 4)

"I was up against an impossibly powerful Dungeon Boss, a Fire Dragon, one of the most powerful Monsters we've ever come across in history, only three others of that level have ever appeared.

It seemed like I was all but certain to die, so I figured I might as well go out in a blaze of glory, just recklessly unleash my Magic and run wild.

Which led me to accidentally discover the ludicrously simple way to control it, and while it was still close, I managed to kill the Monster.

I was able to fight with my usual combat skills but with the power boost from my Magic, I usually fought like a wild beast in that state, and the difference was night and day, I definitely wouldn't have survived that battle if I'd been in the hyper-aggressive state my Magic puts me in.

Also, the backlash was a lot less severe, I just got a bit sore and feverish. Afterwards, I couldn't help but think, had I only figured it out sooner, I could've been a much more successful Hunter," She recalled with a wistful sigh.

"I'm quite interested to hear about this too, you never did tell me how you figured it out," Chimed in Charlotte, before adding, "Exactly what kind of training does it entail?"

"Oh, none whatsoever. You just go for it, and if it works, then you're set."

"What? Seriously? Okay, I have to know...how did you do it?" I inquired eagerly, barely containing myself.

"Well, since your ability isn't exactly the same as my Magic, I can't guarantee that it'll work, so keep that in mind and try not to get your hopes up too high.

Alright, here it is...when you feel that swell of intense emotion, don't resist it. Don't fight it, don't push back against it, don't try to stay calm. Instead, embrace it.

Let it surge, no, make it surge! Don't try to bottle it in or put a lid on it, feed into it and allow it to erupt without restraint.

You'll feel overwhelmed, like you're about to black out and drown in those emotions, but even then, keep embracing it, keeping letting it get stronger and stronger...until it comes full circle. And then, you'll be in control."

"What do you mean by full circle? I'm not sure what that means," I replied uncertainly.

"You'll know what it means if it works. And if it doesn't work, then it won't matter anyway. So, yeah, that's all there is to it, pretty simple, right?" She remarked with a smile.

"Yeah, it does sound simple, but it's also an option I never would have considered, it's the exact opposite of what I've been trying to do with my current training," I responded with a wry smile.

"Yes, I doubt I ever would have tried it if I hadn't been in the situation I was in.

While I don't think I'll ever truly get over the regret of how long it took me to figure it out, it is some small comfort to think that my advice might be helping a Hunter of the next generation who's going through the same problem.

Well, I need to get going now, I've got matters I need to attend to. Good luck, young man, I hope it works out for you," She smiled as she glanced at the time.

"Thanks, I hope so too. And thank you for the advice, ma'am, I really appreciate it," I nodded gratefully.

"Of course, don't mention it. Alright, then, Charlotte, I'll be hanging up now, take care of yourself."

"You too, let's talk again soon, old friend," Replied Charlotte, before Frida hung up.

Huh...is it really going to be that simple?

It's kinda hard to believe, especially after all the hard work I've put in over the last month, with minimal results at best.

"What do you think, Chairwoman? You've seen me in that state a handful of times now, think this'll work?" I asked her.

"Well, there's only one way to find out. Let's head downstairs and try it out right away," She suggested with an excited gleam in her eyes.

"I'm pretty eager to try it out too, but...it could be dangerous. I could up in a state of even greater aggression," I pointed out with a frown.

"Yes, that is true...in that case, let's call Rex," She declared, before tapping away on her I-Watch.

The call rang for a while, but he didn't pick up, so she called him again. And then a third time. And then a fourth...when he finally picked up.

"What?" Rex's voice echoed out, sounding wary.

"I need you to come to the Union building ASAP. I know you're not busy, you took a day off today, didn't you?"

"How did you-...? No, I don't wanna. Days off are precious, don't wanna waste it."

"Ah, is that why you ignored my calls?" She surmised dryly.

"...yes. I only answered because I thought it might be an emergency when you kept calling. But you don't sound that urgent, so I'm hanging up-..."

"Hold on, at least let me explain. Kai is going to try something different today, and for safety reasons, I need you here."

"Wha...? My next session with him is in two days, why should I-...?"

"Because if this works, you'll never have to spar against him again."

"...fine. I'll be there in ten-...no, fifteen minutes. Maybe twenty. Definitely less than thirty. Probably."

With that, he hung up before she could say anything else.

"I don't know what he's complaining about, even when he does come to spar against you, all he does is run away the whole time. Your Devour and Drain Skills when combined are a natural enemy to his Magic, but still," She sighed in exasperation.

"I mean, I'm not complaining. I don't want to hurt him, and I'm grateful that he's been helping out at all," I replied with a wry smile.

"I suppose you have a point. Alright, let's head down to the basement and wait for him there, shall we?"

"Sure, might as well, I guess."
