Chapter 114 - FINALE -Deleted scene: The alternate ending

Original Ending - Too Sad

Why it was deleted: Test readers HATED this ending. It was too tragic. They wanted happy-ever-after, not bittersweet tragedy. This was completely rewritten.

Original Ending - Rian's POV

I'm ninety years old when Luca dies peacefully in his sleep.

Human lifespan. Even bonded to me, he couldn't live forever.

"I'm sorry," he whispered before going. "That I'm leaving first."

"Don't be sorry. You gave me fifty years. That's more than I deserved."

"Promise me something?"

"Anything."

"Don't follow immediately. Live. For our children. Grandchildren. Great-grandchildren." He squeezed my hand. "Live, Rian. Really live."

"I promise."

But promises are hard to keep when half your soul is gone.

One Year Later

I'm a ghost. Barely existing.

"Grandpa, please eat," Kai begs.

"Not hungry."

"You're dying. We can all see it."

"Good." I close my eyes. "Ready to join your papa."

"He'd want you to live—"

"He'd want me happy. I'm not happy without him."

Six Months Later - My Death

I die on our anniversary. Fifty-one years since I claimed him.

Fitting. Poetic. Sad.

"Tell your papa I'm coming," I tell Kai. "That I kept my promise. Lived as long as I could. But I need to be with him now."

"I will, Grandpa. I love you."

"Love you too. All of you." I look at my massive family—descendants of that forced bond. "Take care of each other."

I close my eyes. And don't wake up.

The Funeral - Kai's POV

We bury Grandpa next to Papa. Together finally.

"He never recovered," I tell my children. "From losing Papa. He tried. Lasted eighteen months. But he was hollow without him."

"That's sad," they say.

"That's love," I correct. "Real, deep, consuming love. The kind that doesn't survive separation."

"Is that good?"

"It's real. And real isn't always happy. But it's powerful."

We stand at their graves—two men who loved impossibly, desperately, eternally.

"Rest well," I say. "Both of you. You earned it."

[This ending was IMMEDIATELY rejected by beta readers who wanted them to die together peacefully, not with 18 months of grief separation.

• "Why did you hurt us like this?" "This ruined the whole story," and "Change it or I'm never reading your work again."

The ending was completely rewritten to show them dying peacefully within days of each other after 45 happy years together, then reuniting in the afterlife. Much more satisfying for readers.]**
