Unknown POV
Down on the street Lucas lifted his camera, scanning the rooftop, the phone call he had received still ringing in his head.
" something big is coming. Rooftop, She is about to propose don't miss it".
The caller ID was unknown, but Lucas wasn't stupid. It had to be someone in her inner circle who sold her out.
He rested on his car, adjusting the lens of his camera. He caught the face of a woman sitting alone on the rooftop table, with his lens. Her face was well covered, like always.
But Lucas knew better, Hollywood Star.
Elena Moore.
Ring ring
The sound of his phone brought his attention back.
A part of him was expecting it to be the unknown source from earlier, but when he looked at the caller ID and it was his best friend jay.
He rounded his car, and went inside before picking up the call.
Hey man jay said from the other side.
Don't tell me you are calling to check if I was still alive. Lucas said his eyes still focused on Elena.
I am bored man where are you?
I doubt you are going to believe if I told you.
Are you fucking a girl or what.
Shut the fuck up jay.
So rumor has it that Elena Moore is proposing tonight, and guess who is already there to take pictures?
Wait what. The same Elena Moore. Jay screamed almost bursting Luca's ear drum.
That is a golden opportunity.
Lucas moved the phone slightly from his ear, before he went on talking.
I know right Lucas smirked adjusting his camera.
If you are nice to me I might let you be the first to break the news.
Jay laughed.
I will be waiting.
Yeah yeah and the line went dead.
***
Elena Moore.
She kept staring at the message on her screen, it had been delivered, it showed he was online, but he wasn't saying anything.
I have had enough, she mumbled to herself, as she dailed his number.
Ring- ring.
As she tried to call him,She pulled her hoodie tighter, kept her cap low and sunglasses on. No one could know who she was meeting or what she was doing.
What the heck Ethan ? Please pick up. Just this once.
The phone rang and rang, but there was no answer.
She dropped the phone slowly, trying to hide the feeling of disappointment with a tiny smile.
Each time the door opened, Elena looked towards it, expecting to see Ethan only to be disappointed.
Stop looking she scolded herself over and over again.
She turned her back towards the door, her fingers brushing against the tiny velvet box, while she kept rehearsing her lines.
Then she heard the sound of the door again.
Just one more look and I am done she told herself.
Her breathe caught in her throat, the moment she sighted who it was.
And there he was, looking as handsome as ever.
After all this years he still had the power to make her heart race fast.
He wore a black suit which hugged his body tight.
The button of the white shirt, he wore beneath it left opened, showing a tiny bit of his chest, like she loved.
His hair was a little bit rough, which only made him look effortlessly handsome.
For a moment Elena forgot how to breathe.
At that moment Elena forgot about how he had kept her waiting, how he hadn't responded to her messages.
To her all that mattered was he had come, and She had fallen in love with him again.
The man of her dreams, the man she had loved quietly for so many years, the man who she is ready to risk everything for.
But something unusual caught her attention.
The way he looked at her was totally different.
She was expecting him to look at her, like he usually did, when he saw her, like she was the only thing that mattered in the whole wide world.
Instead his expression was cold, distant and unreadable.
She stood up half way, with her hands opened wide for a hug, trying to close the gap between them, but he didn't hug her.
He didn't give her his usual silly grin that makes her blush.
He only gave her a small nod, he didn't even meet her eyes, he placed both hands into his pocket and walked towards the chair.
He pulled out the chair opposite hers, sat down straight, placed both hands on the table as if he was in a business meeting, not the night she was planning.
After that there was an uncomfortable silence.
Elena knew something was wrong, he was here yes, but not in the way she had imagined it.
She swallowed hard, the speech she had been rehearsing had long gone out the roof.
You are quite she said slowly, is everything okay?
He didn't answer, he just kept staring at everywhere but at her, as if he was trying to make up a word.
Elena forced herself to stay calm, maybe he was going through something he wasn't ready to discuss and he just needed a reminder that she was here, slowly she placed her hands on his like she will naturally do.
But the moment her hands touched his he moved his hand as if hers had burned him.
She didn't know how to feel at that moment, it was like something was taken away from her, she searched his face, for an apology, but there was nothing he didn't even say a word.
She told herself everything was going to be fine, that the surprise was going to take his mood from zero to hundred in seconds.
Elenaa took in a shaky breath and gave the waiter who was standing across the room a signal with her hand, like they had planned.
Her heart was racing, her palms were sweaty, but she told herself that this was it.
This was the moment everything was going to change.
Almost immediately, the door burst open, and the waiter, wheeled in a trolley, covered with a white cloth, on top of the tray sat a tray of food, a fully decorated cake, and gifts she had carefully picked for him.
Behind the waiter pushing the trolley three staffs followed, clapping and singing happy anniversary.
Their voices echoed through the rooftop, cheerful, the opposite of what Elena was feeling.
The waiter stopped the trolley beside their table, she bent slightly to light the candle in the middle of the cake, before walking away.
Elena's heart skipped, as she pushed the chair back, and got up,her lips forming a tiny smile, as she spoke.
"Happy anniversary baby" she said brightly.
She turned towards him, with excitement.
She let herself imagine how the whole thing was going to look in pictures.
But sadly when she looked at his face, like really look at him
His body was stiff, his eyes were distant.
His jaw tightened.....Elena he hesitated.
