The roller coaster had five rows of seats. In the last row were Gin and Vodka, then Heiji and Kudo Shinichi; in the third row were Hitomi's ex-boyfriend, Kishiyama, and his current girlfriend, Aiko; in the row in front sat Kazuha and Ran, and in the front row were the girl whose hand Kudo Shinichi had taken, Hitomi, and her friend.
Kudo Shinichi, of course, hadn't spoiled Heiji's private moment without a good reason. Although his emotional intelligence regarding his own affairs with Ran was nonexistent, his IQ spiked when it came to other people's matters.
The reason he insisted on sitting with Heiji was because of Gin and Vodka, who were behind them.
"Hattori, don't you really think those two behind us look suspicious?"
Heiji looked at Kudo Shinichi with resignation. He really wanted to tell this curiosity-filled kid: "Of course they're suspicious, and it's something big. In the not-too-distant future you'll become their biggest problem."
But, unfortunately, he couldn't say those words.
"What could be suspicious about them? They just like to wear black and sunglasses. These days there are lots of people who try to look interesting — why do you care?"
Kudo Shinichi frowned. It seemed that this Hattori really hadn't noticed. "Well, never mind, it's not like I want to interfere," he thought.
Heiji avoided looking at Kudo Shinichi. That guy's powers of observation were extremely sharp, and at the slightest lapse he could discover something.
Clack, clack~~
The roller coaster began to move, the sound of iron wheels rumbling as it sped outside.
"AAAahhh!!!"
The roller coaster went up and down, sometimes climbing slowly, sometimes spiraling. The thrilling sensation of being suspended in the air prompted screams throughout the ride.
Heiji didn't scream, but he wore a timely look of excitement.
Kudo Shinichi looked at Heiji, speechless. What was so fun about this roller coaster to make him so excited?
Vodka, seated behind Kudo Shinichi, saw Heiji's expression and felt a certain disdain. He couldn't understand how someone like that had caught his brother Gin's attention; it was obvious he was just a high-school brat.
By contrast, that Kudo Shinichi was far more intimidating.
The roller coaster continued its rapid course. After passing through a vertical loop, it plunged headfirst into a dark tunnel.
Everything was black, so dark you couldn't see your hand in front of your face.
Clack-clack-clack~~
The sound of the roller coaster's movement was very loud, and combined with the whistling wind from the high speed and the screams, it filled the whole tunnel.
"Ah!
A brief cry of pain was quickly drowned by the tide of noise. However, there was someone who noticed that extremely short, odd cry.
A flash of sharpness lit Heiji's eyes: "It smells like blood."
Soon, the roller coaster shot out of the dark tunnel.
Suddenly, a ripping scream was heard, full of terror.
Sitting next to Aiko, Kishiyama... his head had disappeared. The cut was clean at the neck and blood gushed out, splattering part of Kudo Shinichi's clothing.
"AAAahhh!!!
At Aiko's scream, Kazuha and Ran, who were sitting in front of them, turned around and instantly joined the screaming, their faces pale.
The roller coaster returned to the starting station.
"Heiji~~!!
Kazuha clung tightly to Heiji, trembling from head to toe. She had seen dead people before, but seeing one so close — and decapitated at that — had truly terrified her.
Heiji hugged Kazuha, frowning as he looked at the headless corpse. Because of Kudo Shinichi's interference, he had completely forgotten about this incident. Otherwise, he would never have let Kazuha sit in that seat.
Ran looked at Kazuha with envy, searching for Shinichi with her eyes, but she couldn't find him anywhere.
Da, da, da~
Footsteps were heard approaching. Inspector Megure arrived at the scene accompanied by Officer Takagi.
"What happened?"
"While we were on the roller coaster, someone's head was cut off," said Heiji calmly while putting his arm around Kazuha.
"Ah, so it's young Hattori! What are you doing here?"
On seeing Heiji, Inspector Megure appeared incredibly enthusiastic.
"I told you, I came to spend the day with Kazuha," replied Heiji with resignation.
"Oh, right, I had forgotten. So, young Hattori, what do you make of this case?" Inspector Megure asked with interest.
"This is clearly an accident, don't waste our time," Gin said coldly from one side.
Heiji shot Gin a look and then shook his head, addressing Inspector Megure: "This was not an accident. It's a murder case."
"It's a murder case."
At the same time, Kudo Shinichi appeared out of nowhere and said the same thing.
"Well, so young Kudo is here too."
Seeing Kudo Shinichi, Inspector Megure exclaimed in surprise, feeling at the same time a wave of relief. With these two high-school detectives present, he'd only have to handle arresting the culprit.
Kudo Shinichi looked at Heiji, feeling a twinge of rivalry: "He hasn't moved from his spot, how can he be so sure it's a murder?"
"Shinichi, where did you disappear to?" Ran scolded him, annoyed.
"Sorry, sorry, I went to collect evidence," Kudo Shinichi apologized, embarrassed.
"But what are you saying? I was terrified too, and you just..."
Suddenly, Ran fell silent, because Kudo Shinichi had already run over to where Heiji was.
"Hattori, do you want to see who solves this case faster?"
Heiji gave Kudo Shinichi a look: "Don't you already know? This isn't fair to me."
In truth, Heiji had no interest in the case at all, because the system hadn't given him any notification. No notification meant no reward, and no reward meant no motivation. Well, the truth was he was simply too lazy to handle it.
"Relax, relax. How about I give you some time to gather evidence?" said Kudo Shinichi, confident of his victory.
"Hey, hey, young Kudo, if you know it, say it already. Don't keep it to yourself," intervened Inspector Megure, who wasn't in the mood for games.
"Kid, if you know it, say it at once. Don't make us waste time," said Gin, with a cold gleam in his eyes.
Kudo Shinichi's heart leaped. He realized that this man in black was indeed very strange.
"Alright, it seems Hattori won't get his chance. The truth is always one, and the killer is...
"The murderer is Miss Hitomi.
Just as Kudo Shinichi was preparing to announce the culprit, Heiji beat him to it, leaving him with a frozen expression on his face.
