The memory of that morning's argument with Kermit lingered in my mind like a bitter aftertaste.
I despised that we had fought. All I wanted were answers. Maybe I had become a little suspicious, but given everything that had been happening to me, I couldn't blame myself for that.
So why did he have to growl at me like that? His beast had been so close to breaking free. He could have easily harmed me.
I prepared myself for my afternoon shift and departed with Lucien and the bodyguard Kermit had assigned to protect me. During the drive, I remained unusually silent, gazing out the window while fighting back tears at the memory of our heated exchange.
Two attempts at dinner together, and both had been ruined. It seemed like fate itself was working against us.
Today I had a complicated surgery scheduled.
