Upon hearing Yecheng's words, Yousuke's eyes lit up. He looked at Yecheng as if he had found a kindred spirit and said, "That's right! Just like in Guardian Heroes! The protagonist slowly grows and eventually becomes a hero. You know the game, right, Yecheng? That super famous Sega game? You must have played it."
"Uh, I think I've heard of it..." Yecheng awkwardly agreed as he looked at the suddenly passionate Isao Yousuke. After they arrived in the city, Yecheng planned to part ways with him.
Yecheng didn't know how many transmigrators existed in this world, but if things followed a typical storyline, Isao Yousuke might very well be this world's "son of destiny." However, based on their current situation, Yousuke's combat ability was... pathetic.
If Yecheng waited for him to become strong and invincible, he'd be waiting forever.
As for whether this world was connected to his original one, if he could ever go back, and if there would be another him in the Shinigami world if he did return, Yecheng was completely clueless.
Yousuke didn't object to Yecheng's suggestion to split up. As a fan of all sorts of games, he understood that if the power gap between two teammates was too large, they wouldn't be able to help each other. In fact, they'd become a hindrance to each other's progress.
Clearly, Isao Yousuke still treated this other world like a game and hadn't yet realized the importance of sticking with a strong teammate.
To prevent the protagonist of this world from dying before he could even grow up due to his lack of skill, Yecheng offered him two pieces of advice.
The first was to find something to temporarily hide his face. To be fair, Isao Yousuke's appearance was more "unremarkable" than "ugly," but in this other world full of handsome men and beautiful women, his looks were pretty much on par with a subspecies orc.
The other point was about Isao Yousuke's cheat, The Universal Orator. Yecheng believed that if the ability was to communicate with all things in this other world, then the so-called "communication objects" might not be limited to visible creatures. If Yousuke could research and understand the ability well, he might stumble upon a surprise.
After offering his advice, Yecheng left. At this moment, he couldn't even help Isao Yousuke with his confusion; he was completely clueless about this world himself. Since Yecheng could understand the local language, he at least avoided the embarrassing situation that Isao Yousuke was in.
As for where to gather information, Yecheng chose the local Adventurers' Guild. In a fantasy world of swords and magic, adventurers are standard, and with adventurers, there must be organizations like the Adventurers' Guild.
With his outstanding looks and excellent conversational skills, Yecheng quickly found the local Adventurers' Guild. With just a few words as a "new adventurer," he captivated the receptionist, a young woman, and left her completely smitten.
This other world was named "Granbahamal." It was basically the same as the real world, populated by humans and other races like elves. They were generally good-looking; even the passersby and ordinary villagers were handsome men and beautiful women. This was why Isao Yousuke was initially mistaken for an orc.
The world's currency consisted of three types: copper, silver, and gold. One copper coin was worth about 10 sen (0.1 yen), and the exchange rate between copper, silver, and gold was 1:10,000.
Yecheng also learned that there was currently no Demon King in this world. This meant that the boss he wanted to defeat was likely another kind of creature. As for the existence of gods, the receptionist didn't seem to know much, as she was just a regular receptionist at the Adventurers' Guild.
One thing did make Yecheng quite happy, however. It seemed that anyone in this world, as long as they had a certain level of knowledge and skill, could use magic. Mana wasn't innate; it could be strengthened through training. There were also "incantations" used to shorten spell-casting time, which involved sealing mana into a charm for a single use.
"Yecheng, this is your adventurer's card. Remember to keep it safe. You can get a replacement if you lose it, but the procedure is quite a hassle. Since you've just registered, you're only a beginner-level E-rank adventurer. Do you want me to find you some low-danger E-rank quests?"
Yecheng had never believed the saying that good looks could put food on the table, but now he was a firm believer. He even had to admit that living off a woman's kindness might be even sweeter.
"Miss Soya, while it's true I'm a new adventurer, please don't underestimate me. I have some combat skills. I just hadn't registered as an adventurer until now. So, could you use your authority to help me get some more difficult quests?"
According to the Adventurers' Guild's rules, adventurers could only accept quests that matched their rank. This was for both the employer's and the adventurer's safety. After all, taking on a quest beyond one's ability had an extremely high mortality rate.
"It's not that I don't want to help you, but it's just too dangerous. I've been in charge of many new adventurers over the years. Many of them claimed to be excellent hunters or to have great talent, and they accepted quests beyond their adventurer rank from me. Unfortunately, their endings were not pretty. Some died at the hands of monsters, while others survived but were left with lifelong disabilities. Yecheng, the world outside is more dangerous than you think, and those monsters are stronger than you imagine. So, how about we just improve your strength step by step?"
Yecheng sighed deeply at her advice. It wasn't that he was in a hurry to raise his adventurer rank, but if he didn't get some source of income soon, he feared he might end up sleeping on the streets.
He and Isao Yousuke were suddenly dropped into this world without any local currency. The adventurers they met were also broke. Their so-called "mental distress compensation" was a big bag of copper coins. Yecheng had thought he hit the jackpot, but after splitting it with Isao Yousuke, his share barely covered the registration fee at the Adventurers' Guild, leaving him with only a few coins.
With a purchasing power of 0.1 yen per copper coin, Yecheng felt that the few coins he had might not even be enough to buy the cheapest loaf of bread...
