One hundred years ago.
The predecessor of Phantom Lord, the Dark Guild Blue Skull's Guild Master, sent his subordinates to Tenrou Island to steal the Tenrou Jade.
Mavis, who resided on Tenrou Island, convinced three treasure hunters—Precht, Warrod, and Yuri—who were also there for the Tenrou Jade, to help her retrieve it.
However, none of the four knew any magic at the time, and they were beaten by Blue Skull, scurrying away in fear.
Troubled by her lack of power, Mavis accidentally met Zeref, who was bathing, by a lake. Not only did she see his entire body, but she also asked him to teach magic to her and her companions.
Thus, the Black Wizard's magic class began.
After a period of teaching, Zeref's curse prevented him from staying long. Before leaving, he imparted powerful magic to Mavis and the three others.
With their new power, the quartet once again attacked Blue Skull.
Under Mavis's brilliant strategy, Blue Skull was easily dismantled and defeated.
The unwilling Guild Master of Blue Skull chose to self-destruct, but before he died, he injected his evil thoughts into the Tenrou Jade. Yuri, unknowingly, touched the Tenrou Jade, activating the evil thoughts within it.
Driven by the evil thoughts, the Tenrou Jade erupted with incredibly powerful Magic Power, causing the devil's skeleton treasured by Blue Skull to "come alive."
To save her companions and innocent civilians, Mavis forcefully used the lost magic, Law, that Zeref had taught her, destroying the devil's skeleton and saving everyone.
However, due to forcefully using Law—which she hadn't fully mastered—with a Magic Power output far exceeding her limits, Mavis's body could no longer grow, remaining permanently in the form of a thirteen or fourteen-year-old.
