My disbelief was written across my elegant features as I processed her words.
I remained perfectly still, my fingers gracefully releasing the porcelain teacup. "Your skepticism doesn't surprise me. But tell me, wasn't it Mrs. Danna Zaid who orchestrated the engagement swap between your family and the Zaids?"
"What are you implying?" Suspicion clouded Madge's expression.
"Consider this carefully, Miss Uriah. If the Zaid family had truly coerced Soren into this marriage, do you honestly think he would remain under their roof?" I allowed a wistful sigh to escape my lips, my eyes taking on a distant quality. "Cobb's father serves as a cautionary tale of what happens when one refuses to comply."
The teacup quivered in Madge's grip.
I pressed my advantage. "Soren refuses to repeat their mistakes. He cherishes the memories you two share, but why corner him? Even with lingering affection for you, marriage will never be an option if you continue this pursuit."
