Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 Family meal 1

It had been an hour since Emma and Alex received their marriage certificate. She sat at her desk, still in shock. It was like a dream. She had made this marriage proposal on impulse. Now she had to accept it. She would prove to that bastard ex-boyfriend that she would live happily with this billionaire husband.

Terrence, Emma's department manager, walked by and knocked on the table in dissatisfaction, "Follow me."

"Huh? Oh, okay, Terrence." Emma quickly regained her composure.

Terrence sat down, rarely smiling, "This week's internship topic, your article got the highest score, so your article will be posted in next week's topic."

Emma sincerely said, "Thank you, Terrence."

She knew that not every weekly topic of the intern would be published. Only the leader had the chance, and Terrence was a talented mentor. He did not hesitate to point out every little mistake and help her fix it.

"Yeah, try to continue to do well next week."

The other mentor reporters also announced this news to their interns. When Emma returned to work, she felt the atmosphere was a little heavy.

Cindy was the first to speak up, her tone full of sarcasm: "Emma, I didn't expect you to be so good. You were chosen to be the company's first reporter."

Emma's appearance had broken the balance between the interns, so it was understandable that they didn't trust her.

"Thank you, it's all thanks to Manager Terrence's careful guidance."

The more she mentioned this, the more uncomfortable she felt.

In the past, Terrence had always been adamant about not teaching new interns or new employees, but this time, he made an exception. What they were most jealous of was that Emma could learn from him.

But this could not be said; otherwise, it would embarrass their reporter mentor.

Someone hinted, "Emma is beautiful, your husband is handsome, and he is also talented. Emma, who knows, maybe you will be promoted to editor in the future."

Didn't this imply that Emma relied on her connections to rise to the top?

She had met many people who were jealous of her, so she did not rush or get angry, but calmly replied: "I am not as good as you say. But I think as long as you try, you will succeed."

After work, Alex went to the company where Emma worked to pick her up, and they went home together.

Mrs. Carter looked at the man standing next to her daughter, her face beaming: "Alex is coming too? Why didn't you tell me earlier? Let me buy some more food to treat you."

Alex shook her head: "No need, just some daily food is fine. Emma and I came here today because we have something important to tell you."

Mrs. Carter was stunned, then smiled and said, "This kind of formality? You make me so worried."

Emma and Alex looked at each other, then she held out the red book she received this morning in front of Mrs. Carter. She gently said, "Mom, we've already registered our marriage."

Alex naturally took her little hand, their fingers intertwined, her voice warm: "We just registered our marriage this morning. There was something urgent, so we didn't have time to tell you."

Mrs. Carter: "..."

She really wanted her daughter to get married, but this was too hasty. They haven't even discussed the dowry with the Knights yet.

How about getting married just like that?

Mrs. Carter forced a smile, "Alex, you sit down first. Emma and I will go inside and talk for a bit."

After saying that, she pulled her daughter's hand and walked into the room with a dignified expression.

Closing the door, she asked in a serious voice, "Are you crazy? You were still hesitating yesterday. What are you doing today?"

Emma raised her eyebrows: "Mom, you urged me to get married yesterday, are you regretting it today?"

Mrs. Carter choked up: "I don't regret it. But you are really my silly daughter. We haven't discussed the dowry with the Knights yet. What's the rush?"

Looking at her appearance, she wanted to carve the words "sell your daughter for money" on her forehead.

Emma sneered: "Mom, that's not important. You were the one who hurriedly arranged for me to go on a blind date. I've already helped you solve a big problem in your heart."

"What nonsense are you talking about? Who said there was no dowry? Without a dowry, isn't it useless to marry?"

But Emma was determined not to let Mrs. Carter have her way. When she agreed to the arranged marriage with Alex, she had no intention of accepting any money from the Knight family. If Alex's words were true, she would get more than she had imagined. The relationships and resources around him were all great interview topics.

Relying on his influence, she would also fulfill her role as "Mrs. Knight" in front of his father.

Emma couldn't help but sigh in her heart. She had firmly opposed marriages for the benefit of the family; now she realized, these kinds of marriages could be more sustainable.

"Mom, aren't you going too far by taking advantage of a child?"

Mrs. Carter was so angry that she reflexively raised her hand, but a knock on the door interrupted her.

Emma chuckled, full of sarcasm. This mother seemed to always know only one trick: control by violence and attack by reason.

Mrs. Carter glared, but as soon as she opened the door, her expression immediately changed, revealing a bright smile: "Alex, we're done talking."

Alex glanced at Emma, as if to check if she was okay. Seeing that she was still okay, Alex felt relieved. "Auntie, my father wants to meet you at the Emperor's Restaurant this weekend. I wonder if you're free?"

"Free, free, I have time." Mrs. Carter replied immediately without thinking.

He smiled slightly, stretched out his long arm to place it on Emma's shoulder, and pulled her closer.

Emma was forced to step closer to him, clearly feeling the warmth from his palm spreading over her shoulder. His hand gently caressed her hand, making her heart stop beating.

Looking up at the man with gentle eyes and a gentle smile, she heard a warm voice, but each word carried determination:

"Tonight, Emma and I will go home first. We will come pick you up on the weekend."

Emma felt her nose sting. Even though it was just an act, it seemed like this was the first time in many years that she felt the feeling of being protected by someone else.

Mrs. Carter looked at the backs of the two people hugging each other as they left, thinking to herself: It seemed like things weren't as she imagined.
