Chapter 2 - Prologue 2

The pointy skyscrapers that seemed to pierce the heavens slowly crumbled as the floating island sank to the bottomless surface.

The last of mankind in City A watched the yellow dusty afternoon sky from the city square.

There was no electricity. No flashing billboards. No flying cars. No food. No water. No atmosphere.

Mankind had thoroughly lost.

The ones at the square were people the Cyborgs deemed a waste of ammunition and were ones left to witness the last of humanity.

Among the crowd were children, elderly, war veterans and normal adults of the society.

They all had tears running down their faces. The children sobbed uncontrollably, not understanding the situation fully but out of hunger and helplessness.

The adults rubbed their backs and hugged them closer, acting as their last shields.

Watching the crowd from a rooftop, a man lit a cheap cigarette and took a puff.

He may seem different than the rest, but the dried tears on his face spoke a whole different story.

"Is this what an apocalypse looks like?" The man said in a hoarse voice as he turned away from the crowd, watching the skyscrapers collapse and the sky island starting to accelerate to the bottom.

His clothes fluttered in the wind and as moments passed, his feet lifted off from the ground.

The children cried harder and the adults did their best to protect them, but it was to no avail.

Being in the middle of the city, metallic debris fell from the buildings and wiped out the last of mankind.

The man with the cigarette was still alive, witnessing the horror with his own two eyes.

His vision had dimmed and he seemed to have lost all will to live. Though, he could not understand why he was still grabbing onto a handle and trying to survive.

It was a futile attempt. The sky island would fall and City A would be pulverized.

It did not matter where he held on or loosened his grip. Only one fate awaited him.

Yet, he still could not understand this emotion.

"…life is a fascinating creation of the Dao."

A soothing voice suddenly entered his ears.

The wind was so strong that he could not turn his head to look around. He was already at his wits end while grabbing the handle.

"…and man is an even bigger fascination."

The sky island was about to crash on the ground. The buildings had all collapsed and the foundation of City A was destroyed.

The man couldn't hold on anymore either.

He saw a blurry figure appear in front of him, but his grip on the handle loosened.

He caught a red glimpse of the figure before everything eventually turned dark.

With him, the last of mankind perished.
