Chapter 40 - FAMILY GROW'S

Two Months Later

"There's a situation at the orphanage," Serina said, finding Kieran in the library.

He looked up from reports about seal deterioration. "What kind of situation?"

"Twin infants. Fae. Their parents died in a border skirmish. They're maybe six months old. Too young for the academy, too young for most foster situations." Serina's expression was careful. "The orphanage asked if you and Rhydian might—"

"Infants?" Kieran's heart jumped. "Twins?"

"I know you have three already, and with the Sealed Ones—"

"Take me there. Now."

Through the bond, Rhydian felt his urgency. What's wrong?

Nothing's wrong. Everything might be right. Meet me at the orphanage.

On my way.

Orphanage - Twenty Minutes Later

The twins were impossibly small. A boy and girl, with silver fae markings already visible on their skin. They lay in a shared crib, holding hands even in sleep.

Kieran's breath caught.

"They won't separate," the orphanage director said quietly. "We tried individual cribs. They screamed until we put them back together. They're bonded. Twin soul bond. Extremely rare."

Rhydian appeared beside Kieran, took one look at the sleeping infants, and Kieran felt his husband's heart melt through their connection.

"Their names?" Kieran asked.

"They don't have any yet. Parents died before naming them."

"Can we—" Kieran looked at Rhydian. Through the bond: Thoughts?

I'm already attached. How are you doing this to me?

I'm not doing anything. They're just—

Perfect. They're perfect. And we're taking them home.

"We'll take them," Kieran said aloud. "Both of them. Obviously both of them."

The director looked relieved. "I hoped you'd say that. They need stability. Love. They need—"

"A family," Rhydian finished. "They have one now."

Kieran carefully picked up the boy. He stirred but didn't wake, tiny hand curling around Kieran's finger. Rhydian took the girl, cradling her with surprising gentleness for someone with claws.

"We have five children now," Rhydian said wonderingly.

"We have five children now," Kieran agreed, smiling. "The others are going to be excited."

"Or jealous."

"Probably both."

Shadowkeep - That Evening

"BABIES!" Elara shrieked when they came home with two infants.

"Inside voice," Kieran reminded her, but he was smiling.

Finn and Mira approached cautiously, curious and uncertain.

"These are your new brother and sister," Rhydian said. "They need a family. We're it."

"They're so small," Mira whispered, gently touching the girl's hand. "What are their names?"

"They don't have any yet. We thought—maybe you three could help choose?"

That got their attention.

"Really?" Finn asked.

"Really. They're part of our family. You should have input." Kieran sat on the couch, letting the children gather around to see the twins. "Any ideas?"

They spent an hour debating names—ridiculous suggestions from Elara ("Sparkle and Rainbow!"), practical ones from Finn ("Something strong. Warrior names."), thoughtful ones from Mira ("Names that mean hope. They survived losing their parents. They're hopeful.").

Finally, they agreed.

"Theron," Finn declared for the boy. "It means hunter. Like Papa Kieran used to be."

"And Lyra for the girl," Mira added. "It means lyre, but it also sounds like our Lyria. Who's been helping with everything."

"Theron and Lyra," Kieran tested the names. They felt right. "Perfect."

The twins woke then, beginning to fuss. Kieran and Rhydian exchanged panicked looks—they'd fought Sealed Ones but infant care was new territory.

"I'll get bottles," Serina said, appearing with supplies. "You two look terrified."

"We are terrified," Rhydian admitted.

"Good. Healthy fear keeps babies alive." She demonstrated feeding techniques while the three older children watched with fascination.

"Can I help?" Elara asked eagerly.

"Carefully," Kieran said, letting her sit beside him while he fed Theron. "Support his head. Just like that. Perfect."

Through the bond, Kieran felt Rhydian's overwhelming emotion. Five children. Their family had doubled in size in six months.

"We're insane," Rhydian sent.

"Completely. But look at them."

Five children. Three who'd needed a home. Two who needed a family. All of them theirs now.

"Worth it," Rhydian agreed. "Every sleepless night will be worth it."

Midnight - Master Bedroom

Theron and Lyra's cribs were set up in their room—the twins too young to be far away. Both infants were crying. Simultaneously. Loudly.

"How do people do this?" Rhydian asked, rocking Lyra desperately.

"I have no idea," Kieran said, trying to soothe Theron. "Maybe we made a mistake. Maybe we should have—"

"We didn't make a mistake," Rhydian said firmly. "We're just learning. Like we did with the others."

"They were older. These are babies. Actual infants who can't tell us what's wrong!"

A knock. Finn entered, looking half-asleep. "Do you need help?"

"You should be sleeping," Kieran said.

"Can't sleep with them crying." Finn approached Theron, made a soft growling sound. The infant immediately calmed, staring at him with wide eyes. "Werewolf thing. Babies find it soothing."

Mira appeared next with Elara. "We can help too. Take shifts. You two look exhausted."

"You're children. You need sleep—" Rhydian started.

"We're family," Mira interrupted. "That means we help. All of us. Together."

Kieran felt tears prick his eyes. Their older children, stepping up without being asked. Taking responsibility. Being family.

"Okay," he said. "We take turns. Two hour shifts. Everyone gets some sleep."

They worked out a schedule. Finn's werewolf sounds calmed both twins. Mira's gentle humming worked too. Elara was best at diaper changes, somehow.

By dawn, everyone was exhausted but both twins were sleeping peacefully.

"We survived night one," Rhydian said, collapsed on the bed beside Kieran.

"Only about six thousand more to go."

"That's still not helping."

"We'll manage," Kieran said, pulling him close. "We have help. We have each other. We have five amazing children who actually want to be family. That's—"

"Everything," Rhydian finished. "That's everything."

Through the bond, love and exhaustion mixed.

Five children. Two infants. Three Sealed Ones trying to break free. War approaching.

Their lives were chaos.

Their lives were perfect.

"I love you," Kieran said.

"I love you too. And our insane family. All of it." Rhydian kissed him softly. "Worth every sleepless night."

"Every tantrum."

"Every diaper."

"Every moment of terror that we're doing this wrong."

"We're doing it right," Rhydian said with certainty. "Because we're doing it together. All seven of us. That makes everything right."

Through the bond, absolute truth.

They'd face the coming storm. They'd protect their family. They'd fight with everything they had.

But first—they'd sleep for two hours before the twins woke up again.

Parenthood. Somehow scarier and more rewarding than godhood.
