Chapter 39 - PREPARING FOR TOMORROW

Three Months Later

"Again," Kieran said, watching Finn practice defensive stances.

"I'm tired!" Finn complained, but he reset his position anyway.

Despite promising the children wouldn't fight, Kieran and Rhydian had agreed basic self-defense was necessary. Just in case.

"One more set, then break," Kieran promised. "Show me what you'd do if someone grabbed you from behind."

Finn demonstrated the escape technique—twist, drop weight, slip free, run. Perfect execution.

"Good. Now—"

"Papa, can we stop? Please?" Finn's voice cracked. "I know you're scared. I feel it. But I'm just a kid. I don't want to spend all my time preparing for war."

The honesty hit Kieran hard. Through the bond, he felt Rhydian's guilt from across the castle where he was drilling Mira on vampire combat techniques.

"You're right," Kieran said, sitting on the training mat. "I'm sorry. I'm projecting my fear onto you."

Finn sat beside him. "I'm scared too. But I also want to—I don't know. Be a kid while I still can? Play with my sisters. Study normal things. Not think about monsters every second."

"You're very wise for eight years old."

"Nine next week," Finn corrected. "I want a birthday party. A normal one. With cake and games and friends. Not weapons training disguised as celebration."

Kieran pulled him into a hug. "You're absolutely right. Birthday party. The most normal, excessive, ridiculous party the Shadowlands has ever seen. Deal?"

"Deal." Finn hugged back tight. "Thanks, Papa. For listening."

That Evening - Family Dinner

"So," Rhydian said, clearly uncomfortable. "Finn's birthday is coming up."

"Next week," Elara supplied helpfully. "He's going to be nine! That's almost double digits!"

"That's not how math works," Mira said, but she was smiling.

"We want to throw you a party," Kieran said to Finn. "A real one. What do you want?"

Finn's eyes lit up. "Really? Not training? Actual party?"

"Actual party," Rhydian confirmed. "Cake, games, friends, presents. The works."

"Can I invite the kids from the academy?" Finn asked eagerly. "There's this vampire boy, Cassian, and a human girl, Luna, and—"

"Invite whoever you want," Kieran said, happy to see his son excited. "This is your day."

"And can we have chocolate cake? The really good kind from the bakery in the city?"

"Done."

"And can Papa Rhydian not be scary for one day?" Finn asked hopefully.

Rhydian looked offended. "I'm not scary."

All three children stared at him.

"I'm protective. There's a difference."

"You growled at Cassian when he said hello to Finn," Mira pointed out.

"He was too close. Personal space is important."

"You threatened Luna's father when he came for parent meetings," Finn added.

"He looked suspicious."

"Papa Rhydian, you threaten everyone," Elara said matter-of-factly.

Through the bond, Kieran felt his husband's indignation and reluctant acceptance.

"Fine," Rhydian said. "One day. I will be un-scary. For your birthday. But if anyone actually threatens you—"

"Then you can be scary," Finn agreed. "But only if there's real danger. Not imaginary danger."

"I don't imagine—" Rhydian stopped at Kieran's look. "Fine. Real danger only."

"Thank you!" Finn bounced excitedly. "This is going to be the best birthday ever!"

Watching his son's joy, Kieran felt some of his constant anxiety ease. They were preparing for war, yes. But they were also living. Creating memories. Giving their children the childhood they deserved.

That mattered. Maybe more than anything else.

One Week Later - Birthday Party

The gardens were transformed with decorations. Twenty children from the academy ran around playing games. The chocolate cake was massive. Finn was radiant with happiness.

"You did good," Lyria said to Kieran, watching the chaos. "This is exactly what they needed. Normalcy."

"He deserves it. They all do." Kieran spotted Elara teaching a group of younger kids a game. Mira was talking to Cassian—the vampire boy—looking more relaxed than usual. "They deserve to be kids."

Dante appeared with Cade. "Speaking of kids—when are you two having more? Three seems like just the start."

"We're not—" Kieran paused. Were they? They'd never discussed it. "I don't know. Maybe?"

"You should," Cade said. "You're good at this. And the kingdom could use more royal heirs. Succession planning and all that."

Through the bond: Did you hear that?

I did. Thoughts?

I'm terrified of three. More seems insane.

But also?

A pause. Then: Also kind of perfect. Our family feels incomplete. Like there's room for more.

Kieran felt the same way. Three children had filled holes in their hearts they hadn't known existed. Maybe there was room for more love. More chaos. More family.

"We'll think about it," Kieran told Dante. "Right now, we focus on the three we have."

"Fair." Dante grinned. "But I'm calling it now—within a year, you'll have at least one more."

"That's not—"

"Papa Kieran! Papa Rhydian!" Finn ran up, breathless and beaming. "Come play with us! We're doing relay races!"

They let themselves be pulled into the games, joining the chaos of children's laughter and competition. Rhydian even managed to not be scary, though several parents still gave him wary looks.

During cake, Finn blew out his candles with his sisters on either side, all three making wishes together.

"What did you wish for?" Elara asked.

"Can't tell or it won't come true," Finn said. But he looked at Kieran and Rhydian with such love and gratitude that words weren't necessary.

Later, after the party ended and guests left, after presents were opened and three exhausted children were finally in bed, Kieran and Rhydian collapsed in their room.

"That was—" Rhydian started.

"Perfect," Kieran finished. "Absolutely perfect. We gave him a normal birthday. A happy memory. That's what matters."

"Even with Sealed Ones threatening to break free. Even with war coming." Rhydian pulled him close. "We gave them today. That's—that's everything."

Through the bond, peace and contentment flowed despite the threats looming.

"Dante thinks we should have more children," Kieran said.

"Does he?" Rhydian's voice was carefully neutral. "What do you think?"

"I think—maybe he's right. Our family doesn't feel complete yet." Kieran turned to face him. "Would you want more? If we found kids who needed us?"

"I'd want whatever makes you happy. Whatever makes our family stronger." Rhydian's smile was soft. "If more children find us, we'll have room. Always room for more love."

"Even with war coming?"

"Especially with war coming. We fight for them. For our family. For the future." Rhydian kissed him. "However many that includes."

Through the bond, love and hope and determination mixed.

The Sealed Ones were coming. War was inevitable. But tonight, they had peace. They had family. They had each other.

And that was enough.

More than enough.

Everything.
