Chapter 14 - Why did it have to be vampires(1)

I ended up killing so many zombies and blood moths that I lost track of time. The moment the others ran off, they all turned their attention to me. In the end, I managed to level up to level 4, but I didn't unlock any skill from my bloodline.

By the time I was done, the halls were paved in blood with bodies sprawled across the floor. A strong sense of relief washed over me, but I couldn't rest yet. There was something else left to do.

I decided to go after the others who were heading to the exit. I walked along the halls and went down the stairs. As I passed through the second floor, I noticed there were little to no zombies. They had all been killed, creating an ominous path ahead.

As I neared the exit, I heard sounds of chatter ahead. When I came upon the scene, what I saw was just as expected. The student council president was bleeding out on the floor, with a stab wound in her stomach similar to the one Jason had.

The vice president was also dead. His decapitated head was lying halfway across the room, and not far from him was Damien's body, which looked like it had a bullet wound in the head. The only person alive was Liora, who had a stony expression on her face as she stared down life and death.

Victor stood in front of her with an attack aimed at killing her. In the next second, I heard what sounded like a small explosion, then a tiny red dot zipped through the air at lightning speed and pierced her in the chest.

Her legs went weak, and she collapsed to the ground. Just before the attack, Liora had attempted to dodge, so the attack barely missed her heart. If she hadn't moved, I would have intervened and stopped the attack from killing her.

Realizing the attack didn't kill her, Victor charged up another attack to finish her off, and that's when I decided to let my presence be known. The moment I revealed myself, a sly smile bloomed on Victor's face while Isabella stared at me coldly with two daggers in her hand.

"So you're not dead after all, huh? Your sister seemed pretty confident that you had died."

"As you can see, she was wrong," I said as I approached him. "If you'll excuse us, I think it's just about time for us to leave."

"Ha! You're more humorous than you look."

I sighed. I almost forgot how much of a pain it is to deal with vampires. If they aren't homicidal maniacs, then they are batshit crazy. There is no in-between with these creatures.

"Tell me something," he continued. "You don't seem surprised. Why is that?"

"..."

"How did you manage to figure it out?"

"If I tell you, will you let us leave peacefully?"

His cheerful smile faded, replaced by a cold, icy glare. I could feel his killing intent from halfway across the room. Fighting this guy would prove to be a pain, so I opted for diplomacy.

"I figured it out by listening to your heartbeats, especially during the times when someone gets killed," I explained. "When a normal person sees or hears about someone dying, their heartbeat fluctuates, at least a little bit. The two of you heart rates never fluctuate. They're always at the same level. That alone told me you guys weren't normal, even though I didn't know for sure you were vampires. That was more of a guess. The everyday students aren't as narcissistic as you so it wasn't hard to guess."

It is said that every vampire has some personality disorder. In this case, Victor was the narcissist.

Victor's smile returned.

"So that's it. You guessed, and you're even stupid enough to tell me your trait in the process. I don't think a strong sense of hearing will help you out of this one."

"No it won't."

Normally, werewolves are born with a specific trait that gives them enhanced supernatural abilities. For example, one werewolf might have a strong sense of smell, while another might have superior hearing. That's why we formed packs to combine these traits. Making us stronger to face off against other supernatural creatures. My sister Liora, for one, has superior agility compared to those in my pack.

But for whatever reason, I was different. I was an all-rounder, a jack of all trades. I had multiple traits. Victor was assuming I only had one trait, and that trait was my sense of hearing which I just told him about. There was no doubt in his mind that he could beat me in a fight, while I would rather not exert the energy. I knew he was formidable. Call me a coward but I would rather face dumb opponents like zombies. I wasn't one for picking hard fights.

Victor raised his hand, and a small orb of blood began to form. It was his signal that he was done talking.

"Let's negotiate," I urged.

"I'm done talking. Blame yourself for being born a weak werewolf."

With those words, the blood in front of him exploded. The attack propelled through the air at lightning speed, heading directly toward me. The moment it got close, I swatted my fist at it, causing an explosion. In the chaos that ensued, I made my move.

In the next instant, I was standing in front of Isabella. She reacted immediately, swinging her dagger at my throat but I grabbed her hand with ease and restrained her from behind.

Victor watched with an unimpressed look on his face.

"Last time, let's negotiate. I'll let her go if you back down."

Victor didn't utter a word; instead, he raised his hand once again.

"You're grasping at straws. That girl is nothing more than a servant. My family has many more of them. Stop cowering and fight properly."

"I would rather not."

"Then so be it."

Without the slightest hesitation, he launched another attack. I shoved Isabella to the side and sidestepped the attack with ease. Victor wasted no time from there, and in a flash of dark energy, he appeared in front of me, throwing a punch aimed at my mid-section.

The blow managed to slip past my defense, and I was knocked several feet back into a wall that shattered from the force. A wave of pain washed over me as I was propelled inside an empty classroom. My head was swimming and there was a loud ringing sound in my ear.

"Mongrels should know their places."
