Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: The Unseen Threat

After dropping the girls off at Elena's house, Ron said goodbye and drove straight to Stefan's place.

"Stefan, open the door," Ron called, knocking firmly.

"Ron? What are you doing here?" Stefan asked, surprised as he opened the door.

"Relax. I'm not here to kill your brother like I promised — not yet, at least. I just want to make sure you both actually leave in two days. You know things are complicated with Caroline, and your brother's already on edge. Better if I keep an eye on you both." Ron said as he walked right in without waiting for an invitation.

Stefan sighed. "Fine. I'll get a room ready for you."

Ron waited only a few minutes before Stefan finished tidying up the spare room. Without hesitation, Ron went straight in and crashed for the night.

By the next morning, things were already getting interesting.

"So, have you thought about where you'll go?" Stefan asked Damon over breakfast.

"No idea. Maybe London. Catch up with some old friends," Damon replied casually.

"Damon, you don't have any friends," Stefan shot back dryly.

"You're right, brother. I only have you. So, where are we going?" Damon said with a smirk.

"We aren't going anywhere. I'm staying as far away from you as possible," Stefan snapped.

"Oh, come on. We're brothers! We could travel the world, maybe even join some TV show," Damon joked.

"Sure, sounds fun. Seriously though — where will you go? Because you can't stay in Mystic Falls," Stefan pressed.

Before Damon could respond, there was a knock on the door. Stefan opened it to find Liz Forbes, Caroline's mother and the town sheriff.

"I need to see Damon," Liz said bluntly.

Before Stefan could call him, Damon appeared, gesturing for Liz to follow him outside. They spoke privately in the backyard. Ron watched quietly, noticing Stefan's expression grow darker by the minute. When Liz finally left, the tension in the room was thick.

"What did you do this time? Another killing spree?" Stefan growled, grabbing Damon by the collar.

"Relax. First — don't touch me. Second — if I had killed someone, you wouldn't know. And third — there are other vampires in town," Damon snapped, pushing Stefan's hand away.

"That's impossible," Stefan said, shaking his head.

"Apparently not," Damon said, his tone serious.

"Who could it be?" Stefan muttered.

"Could it be your friend Lexi?" Ron asked, leaning against a wooden chair.

"No. Lexi left yesterday morning," Stefan replied firmly.

"Then the other option is that Damon's lying. You still trust him, Stefan? Maybe you two should just skip town," Ron said, tapping the chair thoughtfully.

"Hey, it's not our problem," Damon said quickly, noticing the rising tension. "We're leaving soon anyway."

Ron hesitated for a moment, then shrugged. "Fine. But I'm not taking any chances. I didn't see you leave last night, Damon — maybe you went out the window?"

"I'm staying," Stefan interrupted. "If there's another vampire in Mystic Falls, we can't just walk away. Elena could be in danger."

"Suit yourself," Ron said coldly. "But I'm not changing my mind. You both need to be gone tomorrow."

"Got any ideas, Damon?" Stefan asked, still hoping for help.

"Leave it to the grown-ups, Stefan," Damon said with a smirk and walked away.

Bored, Ron decided to head to school. Honestly, if his original "mission" didn't require him to stay enrolled, he would've dropped out long ago.

At school, he saw Stefan and Elena talking quietly together and decided not to interrupt. Instead, he stretched out on the grass by the field and dozed off — exhaustion from sleepless nights finally catching up with him.

When he woke up, the sky was already dark. The school was still lit, but he didn't bother going inside. Instead, he headed for his car, planning to grab some dinner.

Driving down the road, he noticed another car speeding past — and his eyes widened. Behind the wheel was Logan Fell, the news anchor Damon had killed.

Ron instantly realized what that meant — Logan was now a vampire. And worse, Caroline was in the passenger seat, unconscious, with blood smeared on the window.

He floored the gas, swerving ahead to block Logan's car. Before he could even step out, Stefan and Damon arrived, dragging Logan out of the driver's seat.

"Caroline, are you okay?" Ron called, grabbing a wooden stake from his car. He opened her door, checked her pulse, and quickly used a healing charm to stop the bleeding.

"How is she?" Stefan asked, rushing over.

"She'll be fine. Take her home," Ron said, helping lift her gently.

Damon, meanwhile, was on Liz Forbes' still-connected phone. "Sheriff, it's Damon. Caroline's safe — we're on Elm Street."

After hanging up, Ron turned to Logan. "So. Who turned you?"

"I told you — I don't know," Logan muttered.

"That iron rod in Damon's hand says you'd better remember," Ron warned, as Damon lifted the weapon from Logan's trunk.

"You're working with them?" Logan said incredulously.

"I'm not working with anyone," Damon said coolly. "But you pissed me off — and I want you dead. Now, who turned you?"

"I don't know!" Logan shouted again.

"Wrong answer," Damon said, raising the iron rod.

"Wait! I know something! You think you're the only one who wants into that tomb? There's another way in!" Logan blurted out in panic.

"Enough with the crap," Ron snapped. He'd wanted answers, but instead Logan was babbling about the sealed tomb — the one with 27 vampires trapped inside. Ron wasn't taking any risks.

He drove the wooden stake straight through Logan's heart.

"Ron! What the hell?" Damon yelled, shoving him backward — but it was too late. Logan was dead, again.

"You seriously have time to question me? Stefan's not around, and you're still standing here?" Ron shot back, gripping his stake. He was seconds from finishing Damon off when Liz Forbes' car screeched to a stop nearby.
