Chapter 16 - First encounter

The library of Aurelian Academy was quiet, sunlight spilling over shelves of ancient texts and modern volumes alike. Aiden had come to study, seeking a brief escape from the ever-watchful eyes of the students and the recent attention from Victor and Ophis.

He didn't notice the soft footsteps approaching until a voice spoke, calm yet authoritative.

"You're Aiden, correct?"

He looked up. Crimson eyes, sharp and calculating, fixed on him. Ophis Tepes Elderblood stood there, her presence undeniable. Her aura was powerful, but controlled — unlike the raw, commanding force of Victor, hers was precise and intentional.

"I… yes," Aiden replied cautiously, unsure how to respond to someone of her status.

Ophis tilted her head slightly, a faint smile on her lips. "I've heard much about you. Your abilities… they are unusual, even for someone so young."

Aiden frowned, feeling a familiar tightening in his chest. "Abilities?" he asked carefully, unsure how much she knew. "I… I'm just a student."

She laughed softly, a musical sound tinged with amusement. "You underestimate yourself. But that is understandable." Her gaze softened slightly, almost curious. "Do not worry. I am not here to test you… yet."

Aiden swallowed, unsure what to say next. He could sense her power, but there was no malice in it. Only interest — and perhaps a faint recognition of what lay dormant inside him.

"I… thank you," he said finally, unsure if he meant it for her words or simply for not being attacked.

Ophis gave a subtle nod, stepping back. "I will be around," she said lightly. "Observe carefully. One day, you may realize that the world is far larger — and far more dangerous — than you think."

With that, she turned and walked away, leaving Aiden staring after her, a strange mixture of curiosity, awe, and unease stirring in his chest.

By the time he left the library, his friends were waiting for him. Their expressions were a mix of teasing and concern.

"So… what's going on with you and Selene?" one asked, smirking.

Another nudged him. "Yeah, we've noticed. You two are always together lately. Are you dating or something?"

Aiden froze, cheeks heating. He glanced at Selene, who smiled faintly but said nothing. His chest tightened, a mixture of nervousness and determination forming inside him.

He didn't answer just yet. But in that moment, he knew… he wanted to ask her. Soon.
