Cane's POV
The name hung in the air between us. Tabitha. I saw the recognition flash in Stephanie's eyes. She saw it on my face. She already knew that this was a matter that was huge and dangerous. I tried to shut it down. Fast.
"Don't worry about that name," I said, my voice coming out rougher than I meant. "I'll handle it. You just focus on getting better."
But I wasn't fast enough. Her eyes, those sharp, knowing eyes, narrowed. She wasn't the scared girl I remembered. She was a woman who had been fighting her own wars. "You know there's no way I'm letting this go, Cane. Not after everything. Start talking. Now."
"Stephanie! Please, let me handle this. You're already hurt as it is and getting involved will only bring more hurt and pain so let me handle this. Just get well for the kids and...." I was talking too much and it only have me away more.
"Cane. Don't do that. I want to know everything."
