Across the black webbing stretched between the skyscrapers, a taunting message had been woven in stark white strands:
"Spider-Man, if you've got guts, come stop us!"
Clearly, this was the challenge left by the Black Symbiote and Sandman for Spider-Man himself.
Among the many black webs hanging in mid-air, a yellow taxi dangled precariously.
Inside, in the back seat, sat Mary Jane, her face filled with panic and fear.
She was the woman deeply loved by this world's version of Spider-Man — the one Peter called the Bully Spider-Man.
That nickname came from Peter's memories: after this Spider-Man had donned the black symbiote suit, his personality had turned arrogant and aggressive. He even once boasted about "throwing sand in the eyes of people he didn't like."So, to tell them apart, Peter had decided to call him "the Bully Spider-Man."
It was just a code name — nothing more.
"Spider-Man now faces a deadly challenge," a reporter's voice rang out below the building."Can he prevail in this heart-stopping showdown? Let's wait and see!"
Below the skyscraper, police cars had formed a wide perimeter. Crowds of onlookers and news crews filled the streets — all eyes in New York were fixed on this spot.
In some ways, the Bully Spider-Man resembled the blond Spider-Man Peter had met in another universe.Both were loved by the citizens they protected.
The blond Spider-Man had toys and merchandise;the Bully Spider-Man had front-page headlines and public admiration.
A year earlier, during a battle with Doctor Octopus, the Bully Spider-Man had stopped a runaway train with every ounce of his strength.His mask had been torn off in the process — his face revealed to dozens of witnesses.
Yet, not one of them exposed his identity.
A year later, his secret was still safe.That alone spoke volumes about the city's gratitude and loyalty.
They were protecting him — in their own quiet way.
Peter couldn't help comparing him to the Amazing Spider-Man of Earth-120703, who had been so misunderstood.Both fought to protect people, but one was celebrated while the other was shunned.
Maybe the Amazing Spider-Man simply hadn't had enough time to win the city's heart.
The Bully Spider-Man, at least, had years of heroism behind him — even earning a Medal of Urban Honor.
Among all the Spider-Men Peter had encountered, this was the only one with such a distinction.Even the blond Spider-Man hadn't received that honor — or if he had, it wasn't among the fragments of memory Peter possessed.
Now, Peter crouched atop a rooftop, his sharp eyes scanning the opposite building.
He needed to locate the Black Symbiote and Sandman quickly — free Mary Jane, and then fight without restraint.
If they threatened her safety mid-battle, the half of him that carried the Bully Spider-Man's emotions would definitely hesitate.
But no matter how hard he looked, he couldn't find either of them.
Spider-Sense.
Peter closed his eyes and held his breath, sending out his Spider-Sense like a radar pulse.
This was a technique he had developed himself — an active, sweeping use of his precognitive ability, similar to sonar.
As his awareness spread outward, anything with hostile intent would light up in his mind.
It was far more effective than waiting passively for danger to strike.
Ironically, he had been inspired to refine this skill thanks to the teachings of the Ancient One and Doctor Strange.
They had shown him that beyond the material world lay a mysterious, magical realm — radiant and infinite.
The Ancient One had told him he would never grasp magic unless he first let go of his rigid understanding of reality.
Peter had chosen a different path.
Through Doctor Strange's astral projection training, he had learned to perceive the Spider-Sense on a deeper level.
And really, wasn't the Spider-Sense itself a kind of "mystic art"?
The only downside was the strain it put on his mind.
Prolonged use could cause fatigue, headaches, or worse —but for now, the advantages outweighed the risks.
As Peter expanded his radar-like perception across the entire building, something flickered into focus.
There!
A humanoid presence — brimming with hostility — somewhere inside the structure.
It had to be either Sandman or the Black Symbiote.
But where was the other one?
Peter frowned. Oddly, he couldn't detect the second presence at all.
Maybe it wasn't here.
He decided not to wait.
Timing his move, Peter sprinted and vaulted through the air, leaping straight toward the hanging taxi.
Even as he moved, his radar-sense tracked the enemy's position, watching it shift rapidly.
The moment he jumped — the enemy moved too.
But Peter was faster.
By the time he landed atop the taxi, the hostile presence had only just begun to stir.
"Peter! They're going to kill us!" Mary Jane's voice trembled, but seeing him brought a flicker of relief.
Peter hesitated.After all, he was only half the Bully Spider-Man — and from his perspective, Mary Jane was… sort of like a sister-in-law.
He finally said, "Don't worry. I'll get you out of here."
"Watch out!"
Before he could react, Mary Jane screamed.
Peter's Spider-Sense hadn't sounded a warning — even his radar showed the enemy still some distance away.
Then instinct took over.He twisted aside just as a dark blur smashed down from above.
BOOM!
A massive, pitch-black figure crashed onto the taxi, tearing off its roof in a shower of shattered glass.
Mary Jane shrieked, diving under the driver's seat just in time to avoid the blow.
The taxi rocked violently, swaying on its web line as she cried out in terror.
Peter grabbed the frame to steady it — and looked up.
The attacker loomed before him: a black, muscular creature with only its eyes and jagged grin glowing white.
Its fanged mouth gaped open as if ready to swallow him whole.
Peter knew that face.
It was the very same Black Symbiote Suit that had once corrupted the Bully Spider-Man himself.
