The ground suddenly split apart. The street ahead folded upward like a giant ruler being bent in half — the left side collapsed inward, while the right side lifted high into the air.
A small car turned the corner and drove straight into the warped section of road — only to vanish, as if it had been squeezed into another world entirely.
No… Peter realized with a shock — this was the other world!
He stared wide-eyed at the surreal scene before him.
"What the hell is going on?!" Peter shouted.
Strange shrugged. "Ah, that's just how it is. This is the Mirror Dimension — you can think of it as a perfect copy of the real world. It looks exactly the same, but everything here is fake."
"Fake?" Peter glanced up — an entire building was folding and crashing toward him. His Spider-Sense screamed in alarm.
He stomped down hard and leapt forward dozens of meters.
BOOM!
The building slammed into the ground behind him, shattering into rubble.
"You call that fake?" Peter turned around and glared.
Strange rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. "Uh… the attacks are real."
Peter: Thank God for my Spider-Sense. Otherwise, you'd have just gotten me killed!
After running for a while longer, Peter glanced behind him — the three enemies were nowhere in sight.
He finally set down the two men he'd been carrying under his arms. It was uncomfortable for all of them — very.
"So, gentlemen," Peter said, catching his breath, "can you tell me what's going on now? Because I'm still completely lost here."
Strange looked at him seriously. "Are you sure you want to get involved in this? Your abilities are impressive, yes — but the world of sorcery is nothing like what you're used to. We're up against fanatics trying to summon the greatest evil beyond this world into reality. It's extremely dangerous."
Peter frowned. "The greatest evil beyond this world? Wait… does that have something to do with that dark sky I saw?"
"You saw it?" Mordo asked in surprise. "You can perceive the Dark Dimension?"
Peter shook his head slightly. "I'm not sure. But I have something I call my Spider-Sense. When I passed through here earlier, I sensed — or maybe glimpsed — a vast curtain of darkness covering the entire real world, slowly moving closer. That's why I came to investigate — and that's how I found you."
"...!"
Mordo and Strange exchanged looks, both inhaling sharply.
This oddly dressed young man (Peter: Excuse me, have you looked in a mirror?) clearly had real power.
Neither of them had ever seen the Dark Dimension with their own eyes, but they'd read descriptions of it in ancient texts.
Peter added, "Also, I'm a provisional member of the Avengers, personally approved by Iron Man. So, if this really is that dangerous, I think you could use my help — and I won't hesitate."
Both Strange and Mordo nodded. Having Peter's abilities on their side would definitely help.
As for the Avengers…
Mordo, who'd spent most of his life training at Kamar-Taj, had only heard of them vaguely.
But Strange, before becoming a sorcerer, had been a world-class surgeon — and he knew very well who the Avengers were. He'd even helped treat victims during the Battle of New York years ago.
So when Peter mentioned being an Avenger-in-training, Strange's trust in him rose immediately.
Then, Strange began to explain the situation.
He and Mordo both came from a place called Kamar-Taj, disciples of the Sorcerer Supreme.
As for what a "sorcerer" actually was — the explanation was simple enough.
The Avengers protected the world from physical threats.Sorcerers protected it from mystical ones — from beings like Dormammu.
Dormammu was the ruler of that very Dark Dimension Peter had glimpsed.
A man named Kaecilius had betrayed Kamar-Taj and turned to Dormammu's cult, trying to bring the Dark Dimension into the real world.
They had already destroyed the London Sanctum and killed its guardian.
Now, they had come to New York, intending to destroy this sanctum as well.
Strange and Mordo had come to stop them.
Just then, the world around them began to twist and rotate again.
"Damn! It's Kaecilius — he's found us! We have to move!" Strange's expression changed drastically.
Peter extended his hands.
Strange and Mordo looked at him in confusion. "What are you doing?"
Peter grinned. "Aren't you two getting on the Spider-Man Express?"
"Uh… I'd rather not," Strange said firmly. "No offense, but being carried like that isn't exactly comfortable."
Mordo shook his head in agreement.
"Fine," Peter muttered, disappointed.
Not that he enjoyed holding two grown men under his arms — but come on, they were sorcerers!
Running with two wizards in hand — that had to be one for the bucket list.
Peter's mind really did work in mysterious ways.
"Let's go!" Mordo snapped, wasting no more time as he sprinted forward.
Strange and Peter followed close behind.
They'd barely taken a few steps when the ground beneath them began to twist again.
The entire street tilted rapidly — what had been a flat plane now angled sharply downward.
Strange and Mordo cried out as their footing gave way, both of them plunging down.
But Peter moved easily — he flicked his wrists, shooting out two strands of web that stuck to their robes, halting their fall instantly.
Both sorcerers froze midair, then looked up at him.
"How are you standing on a vertical wall like that?" Strange finally managed to ask.
Mordo said nothing, but the astonishment in his eyes said everything.
Peter replied as if it were obvious. "Why do you think they call me Spider-Man? Spiders climb walls. Pretty normal, right?"
"…When you put it that way, it does make sense— Wait, no it doesn't! Spiders can climb walls because they're spiders, but you're human!" Strange screamed internally.
Then again, he'd only been a sorcerer for half a year, most of that spent training in Kamar-Taj — his worldview was still catching up.
With more experience, he probably wouldn't even blink at this kind of thing.
WHOOOSH!
The ground flipped over completely, becoming the ceiling.
At the same time, skyscrapers folded like paper fans and tilted down toward them.
"So this is how sorcerers fight?!" Peter shouted, half in awe. "That's amazing!"
He yanked the webs tight, pulling Strange and Mordo back up toward him. Ignoring their protests, he once again clamped them under his arms and sprinted forward.
"Gentlemen!" he called, grinning as chaos unfolded all around them. "Do you have a way to counter this stuff? We can't just keep running forever, right?"
