Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Bar Brawl Initiation

Chapter 3: Bar Brawl Initiation

The bar was a dive, the kind of place where the air was thick with desperation and the floors were sticky with spilled dreams. Neon signs buzzed overhead, casting a sickly green glow over chipped wooden tables and patrons who looked like they'd seen better decades. Jax slid onto a barstool, the vinyl creaking under him, and ordered a plate of fries, muttering,

"Gotham gloom's got nothing on this dump."

The fries arrived, greasy and over-salted, but he dug in, the crunch a small anchor in the chaos of his new reality. His jacket was still damp, clinging to his shoulders, and he wiped a bead of sweat from his brow, the bar's stale air doing little to cool him. Across the room, a group of rough-looking types huddled in a booth, their voices low but sharp, discussing something about a "Butterfly stash" and a "safehouse job." Jax's ears pricked up, his old habit of eavesdropping kicking in from years of watching cop shows for fun.

"Amateurs plotting like bad spies," he muttered, smirking as he twirled his knife under the bar, the motion a quiet comfort.

One of the thugs, a burly guy with a scar across his cheek, caught Jax's eye, his glare narrowing.

"You got a problem, pretty boy?" he growled, standing and cracking his knuckles.

Jax's smirk widened, his heart kicking into gear.

"Nah, just admiring your face. Looks like it lost a fight with a lawnmower."

The bar went quiet, the other patrons glancing over with wary interest. The thug's buddies stood, their chairs scraping the floor, and Jax felt the system ping, a cold jolt in his mind.

[SYSTEM: LOW-DANGER DETECTED.]

[SUMMON AUTHORIZED: 1-2 ALLOWED.]

[CUMULATE: 1.]

"Time to paint this place red," Jax said, his voice low with anticipation.

He triggered the summon, focusing on the need to end this quickly and quietly.

[SYSTEM: SUMMONING: KIMIKO.]

[COMMAND: TEAR THROUGH QUIETLY.]

[DURATION: 4 MINUTES.]

A flash of light, subtle enough to blend with the bar's flickering neon, and Kimiko appeared beside him, her petite frame radiating silent menace. Her dark eyes locked onto the thugs, and she moved like a shadow, her hands a blur as she disarmed the first one, snapping his wrist with a sickening crack. The thug screamed, but Kimiko was already on the next, her movements fluid and brutal, a silent storm of violence.

Jax didn't sit idle. He grabbed his barstool, swinging it with more force than he expected, his new agility making the motion feel almost effortless. The stool connected with a second thug's chest, sending him crashing into a table. The third lunged at Jax, but Kimiko intercepted, her regeneration kicking in as a knife grazed her arm, the wound closing almost instantly.

"Holy shit, you're a tank," Jax said, grinning despite the chaos.

Kimiko didn't respond, just gave him a sidelong glance before slamming the last thug's head into the bar counter, knocking him out cold. The fight was over in seconds, the bar's patrons staring in stunned silence. Kimiko vanished as her timer ran out, leaving Jax standing amid the wreckage, his pulse pounding with a mix of adrenaline and satisfaction.

[SYSTEM: SUMMON COMPLETE.]

[RESIDUAL ECHO: +1 CONSTITUTION.]

[CURRENT STATS: STRENGTH 1, AGILITY 2, CONSTITUTION 2, WILLPOWER 1.]

[ACHIEVEMENT: FIRST BLOOD. +10 SYNERGY POINTS.]

Jax felt the echo settle into him, a faint toughness in his bones, like he could take a punch better now. He tested it, lightly punching the bar's wall, the impact stinging less than he expected.

"Not bad," he muttered, then noticed the thug's wallet on the floor, stuffed with cash.

He pocketed it, the bills crinkling as he grinned.

"Superhero land, blood included."

[SYSTEM: LOOT ACQUIRED.]

[+5 SYNERGY POINTS FROM CONTEXT.]

He grabbed a handful of fries, shoving them in his mouth sloppily, the grease smearing on his chin as he reflected on the thrill. The bar's patrons went back to their drinks, pretending nothing had happened, but Jax caught a whispered word from a dazed thug: "leaks." His eyes narrowed, a spark of curiosity igniting. The cash would buy gear, and the heist talk pointed to a safehouse—his next move. As he left the bar, his shirt still stained with coffee and now a few specks of blood, he felt the system's weight and the pull of this new world. Evergreen was a mess, but it was his mess now, and he was starting to like it.

[SYSTEM: CUMULATE RESET TO 0.]

[PROCEED TO SAFEHOUSE FOR NEXT OBJECTIVE.]
