Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Infiltrating the Team

Chapter 4: Infiltrating the Team

The rain battered Evergreen like it had a personal grudge, turning the streets into a glistening maze of neon and muck. Jax Reed trudged through the downpour, his boots squelching with every step, the looted cash from the bar brawl stuffed in his pocket, crinkling against the damp fabric of his jeans. His leather jacket clung to his shoulders, heavy with water, the faint stains of coffee and blood now blurred by the storm. He twirled his rusty pocketknife, the blade catching the flicker of a streetlight, a nervous habit that steadied his racing pulse. The thrill of the bar fight still lingered, Kimiko's durability echoing in his bones, making him feel like he could take a hit and keep swinging. But the thug's whispered "leaks" and talk of a safehouse had sparked a fire in him, a need to chase the chaos of the Butterfly remnants.

"Sarcasm levels rising, and my socks are a swamp," he muttered, shaking water from his tousled brown hair. "Universe, you owe me a dry day."

The trail led to an A.R.G.U.S. safehouse on the edge of town, a hulking warehouse surrounded by rusted chain-link fences and flickering sodium lamps. The system pinged in his mind, its cold, clinical voice slicing through the rain's relentless patter like a scalpel through flesh.

[SYSTEM: QUEST ALERT.]

[INFILTRATE A.R.G.U.S. SAFEHOUSE FOR INTEL ON BUTTERFLY REMNANTS.]

[CUMULATE SUMMONS: 1.]

[OBJECTIVE: GAIN ACCESS AND OBSERVE.]

Jax's hazel eyes scanned the perimeter, narrowing at the sight of a side door slightly ajar, its hinges creaking in the wind. The warehouse loomed like a fortress, its concrete walls scarred with graffiti, the air thick with the scent of oil and wet metal. He smirked, twirling his knife faster.

"Time to crash the party," he said, slipping through the door with a theatrical flourish. "Sarcasm specialist, hiring?"

The interior was a labyrinth of stacked crates and flickering fluorescent lights, casting jagged shadows that danced like specters. The air was heavy with dust and the faint tang of gunpowder, a reminder of recent violence. Jax's boots scuffed the concrete, his senses on high alert, when a massive figure emerged from the shadows, all muscle and chrome-plated bravado. Christopher "Peacemaker" Smith, in his garish red-and-blue suit, helmet gleaming like a polished trophy, grabbed Jax by the collar and slammed him against a crate with a force that rattled his teeth. Peacemaker's voice was a profane bellow, echoing off the walls.

"Who the hell are you, sneaking into my op? You got a death wish, asshole, or you just lost? Eagly, check this clown!"

A bald eagle—Eagly, its feathers ruffled and talons glinting—swooped down from a rafter, squawking and flapping its wings in Jax's face, the rush of air carrying a musky scent of feathers and wildness. Jax's heart pounded, but he kept his smirk, his knife twirling in his free hand, the motion a defiant anchor against the chaos.

"Easy, Captain Patriot," he said, voice dripping with mockery. "Just here to help. Heard you're short on chaos experts."

From the shadows, a woman's sharp voice cut through, laced with irritation. Emilia Harcourt stepped forward, her blonde hair pulled into a tight bun, a cigarette dangling from her lips as she adjusted a tactical vest with precise, annoyed movements. Her eyes were cold, scanning Jax like he was a glitch in her system.

"Great, another amateur," she snapped, exhaling a plume of smoke that curled in the dim light. "Get done, or get out. We don't need more messes."

Beside her, Leota Adebayo adjusted her glasses, her expression softer but wary, her hands clutching a clipboard like a lifeline. She stood with a slight slouch, her dark curls framing a face that carried both empathy and caution.

"Think first," she said, her voice measured and deliberate. "Who are you, and why are you here?"

Jax's mind raced, the system's secrecy rule clamping down on his tongue. He couldn't spill the truth about his transmigration or the Supe-Synergy Engine, so he leaned into his cover, flashing a grin that masked the knot in his stomach.

"Let's just say I'm a guy who likes to clean up messes," he said, his tone light but edged with defiance. "Heard about your Butterfly problem and thought I'd offer my… unique skills."

Peacemaker snorted, loosening his grip but keeping Jax pinned, his helmet tilting as he sized him up.

"Unique skills? What, you knit or something? Eagly doesn't trust you, and neither do I!"

Before Jax could fire back, the warehouse shook with a deafening crash—metal doors splintering as a dozen Butterfly-enhanced thugs burst in, their eyes glowing with parasitic energy, their movements jerky and unnatural. The air turned electric with danger, and the system blared in Jax's mind, its urgency spiking his adrenaline.

[SYSTEM: MEDIUM DANGER DETECTED.]

[SELECT SUMMON TO ENGAGE THREAT.]

"Showtime," Jax muttered, his pulse hammering as he triggered a summon, focusing on speed to outmaneuver the swarm.

[SYSTEM: SUMMONING: A-TRAIN.]

[COMMAND: SPEED-BLITZ ENEMIES.]

[DURATION: 4 MINUTES.]

A blur of blue and red exploded into the warehouse, A-Train materializing with a cocky grin, his sneakers sparking against the concrete as he skidded to a stop. His eyes flickered with defiance, a near-rogue glint that sent a shiver down Jax's spine. A-Train cracked his knuckles, his voice a mix of arrogance and irritation.

"Yo, I'm the fastest, not your errand boy!" he shouted, before zipping through the thugs, a whirlwind of punches and kicks that sent bodies crashing into crates with bone-rattling force.

But his control wavered, and he veered off, chasing a fleeing thug into the street outside, nearly causing a pile-up as cars swerved and horns blared. Jax cursed, diving behind a crate, his newfound agility letting him move faster than he expected. He swung his knife, catching a thug in the arm, the blade sinking into flesh with a sickening thud. Peacemaker unloaded a barrage of bullets from a comically oversized gun, his voice booming over the chaos.

"For peace, you parasitic bastards!"

Harcourt fired precise shots from a pistol, her cigarette never leaving her lips as she muttered,

"Chaos costs, newbie."

Adebayo ducked behind a crate, shouting,

"Out of hand!"

The fight was a blur of violence, A-Train's speed turning the tide until he vanished in a shimmer, leaving Jax panting, his body tingling with a new echo of agility that made his movements feel like liquid. The thugs were down, the warehouse a wreck of splintered crates, bullet holes, and smeared blood. Jax wiped sweat from his brow, his shirt sticking to his skin, and felt the system's confirmation.

[SYSTEM: SUMMON COMPLETE.]

[RESIDUAL ECHO: +1 AGILITY.]

[CURRENT STATS: STRENGTH 1, AGILITY 3, CONSTITUTION 2, WILLPOWER 1.]

[ACHIEVEMENT: HEIST FOILED. +15 SYNERGY POINTS.]

Peacemaker glared at Jax, his helmet reflecting the flickering lights, but a grudging respect flickered in his eyes.

"Not bad, cosplay friend," he said, misnaming Jax with a grin that showed too many teeth. "But you're on thin ice."

Harcourt stubbed out her cigarette on a crate, her eyes narrowing as she flicked ash onto the floor.

"You're a liability until proven otherwise."

Adebayo offered a small smile, her empathy breaking through the tension.

"Let's give him a chance. He did help."

The team retreated to a corner of the warehouse, where a folding table was set up with a greasy pizza spread, the cheese congealing in the humid air. Jax grabbed a slice, crumbs falling onto his jacket as he griped,

"Pizza's better than motel coffee, but barely."

He deflected questions about his origins, leaning back in a rickety chair and spinning a half-truth.

"Glitch arrival, let's leave it at that," he said, his smirk hiding the ache of being a stranger in this world.

Peacemaker tossed a crust to Eagly, who caught it mid-air, and grumbled,

"You're on probation, glitch boy. Don't screw it up."

Harcourt's foot tapped impatiently as she lit another cigarette, but Adebayo's nod was a quiet vote of confidence. Jax caught Harcourt on a hushed call as they ate, her words too soft to hear, but her tense posture screamed secrets. A chill ran through him, the system whispering a cryptic warning.

[SYSTEM: RANDOM FLAVOR: SHADOWS WATCH.]

[INTEGRATION SUCCESS.]

[+5 SYNERGY POINTS.]

[CUMULATE RESET TO 0.]

Jax munched his pizza, the grease smearing his fingers, and felt a spark of camaraderie amid the team's wary acceptance. The warehouse was a mess, but it was his mess now, and the thrill of the fight had him hooked. He twirled his knife, the blade catching the light, and prepared for the next step, the system's warning lingering like a storm cloud on the horizon.
