Chapter 2: System Tutorial and First Steps
The rain hadn't let up, a relentless drizzle that turned Evergreen's streets into a slick, reflective maze of neon and grime. Jax's boots splashed through puddles, the cold seeping into his socks as he navigated the unfamiliar town, the system's interface a constant hum in his peripheral vision. His leather jacket clung to his shoulders, heavy with water, and he muttered,
"Sarcasm levels rising, and my shoes are a swamp. Great start."
The bar was still a few blocks away, but the system wasn't giving him a break. The holographic figure reappeared, its monotone voice cutting through the patter of rain like a knife.
[SYSTEM: MECHANICS BREAKDOWN INITIATED.]
[SPECIFIC SUMMONS: LOW-TIER 10 SP, MID-TIER 20 SP, HIGH-TIER 50 SP.]
[UPGRADES AVAILABLE: INCREASED DURATION, IMPROVED CONTROL, TARGETED SUMMONING, ECHO BOOST.]
[POWER MIMICRY: RANDOM CYCLE UNLOCK AFTER VARIABLE SUMMONS.]
[DAILY LIMIT: 1 SUMMON, CUMULATES TO 3.]
[DANGER SCALING CONFIRMED.]
[EXPERIMENT WITH INTERFACE TO INTERNALIZE.]
Jax snorted, twirling the pocketknife he'd kept from the motel, its weight grounding him as he dodged a drunk stumbling out of an alley.
"Random Supes? This is a gacha game from hell," he said, his voice dripping with mock enthusiasm. "What's next, loot boxes for laser vision?"
He focused on the interface, navigating its menus with a thought, the display responding like an extension of his mind. It listed summon tiers, costs, and risks, with a warning about rogue Supes that made his stomach twist.
"So, I could summon Homelander and he might nuke the block for fun. Awesome."
The system stayed silent, its cold logic unmoved by his quips. Jax's mind raced, piecing together the rules: he could summon Supes from The Boys universe, each leaving a permanent boost to his stats, but the stronger ones could break free and cause chaos. He had no Synergy Points yet, so specific summons were out, and the daily limit meant he had to be strategic. The danger scaling intrigued him—more summons in high-stakes fights sounded like his kind of party.
"Let's test this cosmic slot machine," he muttered, stopping under a flickering streetlight. The system had said summons were restricted to needs like exploration or combat, so he focused on his goal: gathering intel at the bar. That counted, right? He triggered the summon option, half-expecting nothing to happen.
[SYSTEM: NON-DANGER SUMMON ACTIVATED.]
[SUMMONING: THE DEEP.]
[COMMAND: FETCH WATER.]
[DURATION: 3 MINUTES.]
[CUMULATE RESET TO 0.]
A flash of light erupted in the alley beside him, and there stood The Deep, in all his ridiculous, green-suited glory, his expression a mix of confusion and indignation. His gills flared as he took in the rain-soaked street, his boots squelching in a puddle.
"Water? Seriously?" The Deep said, his voice a whiny mix of offense and entitlement. "I'm a hero of the seas, not your damn errand boy! The oceans are dying, man, and you want me to fetch a bottle like some intern?"
Jax stared, caught between amusement and disbelief.
"You've got to be kidding me," he said. "I get the fish guy in a desert town? System, your sense of humor sucks."
The Deep crossed his arms, ranting about ocean conservation as he trudged to a nearby vending machine, returning with a plastic bottle of water he thrust at Jax like it was a personal insult.
"There. Happy? Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a planet to save."
Before Jax could respond, The Deep vanished in a shimmer, leaving a wet patch on the pavement. Jax felt a brief, tingling surge in his limbs, like he'd just chugged an energy drink. His movements felt… smoother, more fluid, a faint echo of The Deep's aquatic agility.
"What the hell was that?" he muttered, flexing his fingers. "I'm not swimming anytime soon."
[SYSTEM: SUMMON COMPLETE.]
[RESIDUAL ECHO: +1 AGILITY.]
[CURRENT STATS: STRENGTH 1, AGILITY 2, CONSTITUTION 1, WILLPOWER 1.]
[COOLDOWN ACTIVE: 24 HOURS UNLESS DANGER DETECTED.]
Jax pocketed the water bottle, his socks now thoroughly soaked, and griped,
"Fish therapy in a desert. Perfect."
He resumed his trek, the streets of Evergreen unfolding around him like a post-apocalyptic movie set. Shuttered shops, graffiti-covered walls, and the occasional hazmat truck painted a picture of a town recovering from chaos. He stopped at a vending machine, buying a bag of stale chips that crunched like cardboard.
"Even the snacks are a letdown," he complained, munching as he walked, the salt grounding him in the surreal moment.
Overhearing a group of locals outside a diner, he caught snippets of conversation about "Butterfly remnants" and a "heist gone wrong." His pulse quickened—this was the lead he needed. The bar was close, its neon sign buzzing like a dying insect. As he approached, a strange sensation hit him, a fleeting memory of swimming in deep, dark waters, though he'd never been a strong swimmer.
"System, you planting dreams now?" he muttered, shaking it off.
[SYSTEM: RANDOM FLAVOR: DREAM FRAGMENTS MAY OCCUR.]
[PROCEED TO BAR FOR INTEL.]
Jax pushed open the bar's door, the scent of beer and sweat hitting him like a wave. His knife twirled in his pocket, a nervous tic, as he stepped into his first real test in this strange new world, the thrill of chaos calling his name.
