Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: The Upcoming Entrance Exam

Shinsou Hitoshi looked indifferently at the bespectacled man. His expression seemed to suggest he wanted to humiliate him before he died.

The bespectacled man was clearly angry. He had thought most people would sympathize with him and sigh over his misfortune. Who would have thought a brat would show up at this moment to mock and curse him?

But he wouldn't beat up this kid and then jump. He had to stay on the edge to ensure he wouldn't be rescued.

"People like you are also the dregs of society..." Before he could finish the word "dregs," the bespectacled man suddenly felt his body was out of his control. He couldn't even speak.

"What's happening?" The bespectacled man was shocked. Before he could figure it out, his feet began to move backward, taking him farther and farther from the edge.

Wu Shiyin reacted quickly, rushed over, and tackled the bespectacled man to the ground. At that moment, Shinsou Hitoshi breathed a sigh of relief and took a few sips of the carbonated drink in his hand.

Except for Yang Xiao, no one present knew this was Shinsou Hitoshi's doing. Most people directed their hostility toward Shinsou. To curse someone who was about to commit suicide? His character was truly beyond the pale.

"Get lost; you're not welcome here." A tourist pointed a finger at Shinsou Hitoshi's face. He was highly educated and genuinely didn't want to see someone with dyed hair, a sloppy appearance, and rude words.

The other tourists also looked at Shinsou with disgust, as if no one here welcomed him.

Shinsou Hitoshi didn't say anything, just smiled faintly, and then began walking down the mountain. The purpose of this trip to Mount Fuji was achieved. Next time he came, he would climb directly to the Tenth Station.

Yang Xiao actually wanted to explain on Shinsou Hitoshi's behalf, but seeing the person involved didn't care, he didn't speak up. After all, Shinsou's Quirk needed to be kept secret. If he himself wasn't willing to explain, what could a passerby say?

Only Yang Xiao silently praised Shinsou Hitoshi. This guy looked cool and ruffian-like, but he wasn't a bad person.

At least, Yang Xiao's opinion of Shinsou Hitoshi changed after this incident. To be honest, Shinsou was also someone who worked hard, though his Quirk was considered "weaker" in some aspects.

His Quirk wasn't straightforwardly heroic, which was why he was placed in the General Studies Department upon entering U.A. High. His Quirk was powerless against the faux villain robots because robots couldn't be "brainwashed"—one of the reasons.

Unless Shinsou Hitoshi's physical skills were extremely strong, it would be possible for him to enter the Hero Course.

After Shinsou left, everyone's expressions eased. If Yang Xiao didn't know Shinsou's Quirk, he would also dislike this type of person. This was normal. People only see your surface; no one digs deep enough to understand you fully. That's real society.

"Are you okay?" Wu Shiyin said to the man beneath him. The bespectacled man seemed dazed. After a while, he looked at Wu Shiyin and asked, "What happened?"

The tourists all gathered around, looking at the bespectacled man in confusion. You're asking what happened after what you did?

"Turning back from the wrong path is the greatest deed..." someone said at that moment.

"Who saved me? Was it you?" The bespectacled man looked at Wu Shiyin, then noticed their positions were a bit awkward. After coughing, he said, "Could you move aside?"

"Oh, sure!" Wu Shiyin also realized his posture was inappropriate and immediately got off the bespectacled man. Some people laughed out loud, like Toga.

"You mean you don't remember how you moved back?" After chatting with the bespectacled man for a while, the tourists found he seemed unaware of how he had retreated.

"Yes, I feel like there's a gap in my memory; I can't remember it." The bespectacled man rubbed his forehead.

"If you can't remember, don't force it. Just attribute it to divine will. A new life, a new beginning." Yang Xiao smiled and spoke up.

The bespectacled man didn't say anything. After a long silence, he sighed. "Forget it, it's all over. I've died once. From now on, I'll live the rest of my life differently."

"Thank you, strangers." The bespectacled man looked deeply at the people present, then turned and went directly down the mountain. He wouldn't do such foolish things again—not today, not ever.

The Mount Fuji episode ended just like that. After Yang Xiao and the other two finished their meal, they packed up and went down the mountain. Of course, Yang Xiao carried the food. Toga Himiko was truly like a little ancestor who didn't lift a finger and just ate.

When they returned to the Broken House, Gin told Yang Xiao and Toga they could go home. Tomorrow was Sunday. It was up to them whether to come to work or not. If they came, they'd get extra pay; if not, it was fine.

Yang Xiao didn't need that day's salary. He wanted to train his Quirk because the assessment period for U.A. High School was approaching.

...

A month later, it was time for Yang Xiao to take the U.A. entrance exam. During this month, he had focused on training his Quirk and helping at the Broken House. His relationship with Toga had gradually improved. Otherwise, Toga would easily take advantage of him, which left Yang Xiao quite helpless.

Today was the enrollment day for U.A. High School—strictly speaking, it was the exam day. Those who failed couldn't enroll. Those who passed would be assigned to classes based on their scores or abilities.

For example, the Hero Course had Classes A and B; the General Studies Department had Classes C, D, and E; the Support Course had Classes F, G, and H; and the Business Course had Classes I, J, and K—eleven classes in total.

The most popular Hero Course had an annual admission rate of less than 1/300, as they usually only admitted 36 students through the exam plus 4 recommended students, totaling 40.

Yang Xiao wasn't a recommended student; he just had a spot to take the assessment. The recommended students were Todoroki Shoto and Yaoyorozu Momo, but he wasn't on that list.

Now, Yang Xiao stood at the gate of U.A. High School with a white backpack. From the outside, the school was undoubtedly magnificent, far better than schools seen on TV or in daily life.

It was indeed a higher education institution established to cultivate heroes to fight villains.

Many students had come to report, and Yang Xiao was just one of them. Today, he had asked for leave from Wu Shiyin. These days, he could only help at the Broken House in the evenings. During the day, Toga would have to handle some work alone.

However, Yang Xiao was keeping it a secret from Toga. He wouldn't tell her he was about to enter U.A. High School.

Perhaps the turning point for Toga would come after Yang Xiao entered U.A. High. In short, Yang Xiao wouldn't give up on the idea of pulling Toga out of the darkness. He had to get her out of the darkness, permanently.

So, no matter what happened at school, he would still report to the Broken House as usual after school, at least to keep tabs on Toga's situation every day.
