Chapter 82 - [DEM] 82: Reasons

Next was a genius scientist of the 19th and 20th centuries who manipulated electromagnetism.

An unabashed genius who claimed he could even cleave the stars. One of the great scholars who unraveled the secrets of lightning, heralded in countless myths as divine, and brought electricity to human civilization.

Nikola Tesla.

The world's most renowned saint, whose iron fists could shatter steel with a flash and pierce dragons with a single strike.

The Saint of Dragons - Martha.

One of the successive Hassan-i Sabbah. Feared as the "Hundred-Faced" due to his versatile skills, vast knowledge, and unpredictable mentality, he was a figure who, in modern terms, would be diagnosed with multiple personality disorder.

Hassan of the Hundred Faces.

A figure from the 10th to 11th centuries. Born as the eldest son of the Minamotos, he was the ancestor of the Minamoto and contributed greatly to the development of the Seiwa Genji. He vanquished numerous supernatural entities, such as the Shuten-dōji of Ōeyama, the Tsuchigumo of Kyoto, and the Ushi-oni of Asakusa Temple, earning the title of the Heian era's greatest mystic slayer.

Minamoto-no-Raikou.

And finally, the youngest of the three Gorgon sisters from Greek mythology. Originally a local earth goddess, she was forced to flee to the Shapeless Isle by the schemes of the Olympian gods and the frenzy of her devotees.

Depicted as a serpentine monster capable of turning all she gazed upon into stone.

Medusa.

These were the eight Heroic Spirits summoned by Morpheus.

Each of the eight was chosen for a specific reason.

Take Karna, for instance. The reason was simple: Karna was a powerhouse, an exceptional fighter.

Not only was he formidable, but he was also fiercely obedient, carrying out his Master's orders without hesitation, whether good or ill.

This was precisely why Morpheus summoned Karna.

Then there was Emiya.

This man was not only diligent and tireless but also an excellent cook. Though Morpheus already had Erina and Hisako as chefs, he was curious about the Emiya household's cooking—how delicious it must be for Heroic Spirits to be so enamored with it.

So, he used one slot to snatch Emiya from Alaya's grasp.

Next was the Demon King of the Sixth Heaven, Oda Nobunaga.

Morpheus summoned her to confirm whether, in this world, Oda Nobunaga was indeed a woman.

Beyond that, he was intrigued by Oda Nobunaga's Noble Phantasm.

The Demon King of the Sixth Heaven Papiyas!

It was one of the rare Noble Phantasms effective against divine beings.

This Noble Phantasm transformed her into a Reality Marble that exerted absolute power against those with divinity or mystery. It was a manifestation of the brutal acts she committed in life, such as the burning of Mount Hiei, crystallized by the fear and awe of later generations into a vast, scorching hell.

Those with high divinity struggled to maintain their existence in this space, though for Heroic Spirits with weak divinity, it was merely "a bit hot."

But for gods, it was an undeniable trump card.

Then, Nikola Tesla.

To the world, Nikola Tesla was best known for his rivalry with Edison in the War of the Currents, a genius who invented alternating current.

But those in the know understood that Tesla was a genius among geniuses.

Many hailed him as the man closest to god.

Throughout his life, he created countless inventions, with alternating current being merely the most impactful.

Beyond that, Tesla had many astonishing, even revolutionary, inventions.

However, due to funding constraints, many never saw profit.

Now that Alaya had tasked Morpheus with dismantling the Umbrella Corporation, he saw an opportunity to repurpose it, taking it over as his own.

For that, he needed someone to manage Umbrella.

Nikola Tesla was the perfect candidate—arguably the only one suited for the job.

Morpheus believed that with sufficient funding, Tesla could unleash his inventive prowess, creating groundbreaking technologies.

This could propel human civilization forward in a great leap and elevate Umbrella to new heights.

Then, the Saint of Dragons Martha.

Morpheus summoned her because he was intrigued by her combat techniques.

The Hand of Jacob.

An ancient martial art passed down from Jacob to Moses, and then to Martha.

Mastery of this technique could even allow one to defeat an archangel.

According to legend, a saint who mastered this art once defeated an angel of destruction leading twelve thousand angels.

So Morpheus summoned the Saint of Dragons to test just how formidable her inherited martial art was.

Next was Hassan of the Hundred Faces.

The reason for summoning him was to handle unsavory tasks.

Umbrella had plenty of people who deserved death.

Morpheus had no interest in wasting energy chasing them down. That's where Hassan came in—an assassin who could split into dozens of clones to act simultaneously.

Killing off Umbrella's remnants was right up his alley.

Thus, Morpheus needed Hassan to deal with these shadowy matters.

As for Minamoto-no-Raikou, the reason was simpler.

She was well-endowed.

Morpheus admitted he was shallow—anyone with a large chest caught his fancy, and Raikou was no exception.

Moreover, Raikou wasn't just well-endowed; she was an exceptional fighter.

Especially against yokai, she was practically their natural enemy.

The Shuten-dōji of Ōeyama, the Tsuchigumo of Kyoto, the Ushi-oni of Asakusa Temple—all were legendary yokai, yet all fell to Raikou's blade.

So Morpheus summoned her.

As for the final Heroic Spirit, Morpheus had initially considered summoning Nasuvere's poster girl, Artoria Pendragon, but ultimately chose otherwise.

He picked Medusa instead.

In terms of pure combat strength, Artoria might surpass Medusa.

But Artoria was too rigid and by-the-book.

Morpheus worried they wouldn't get along well.

So he chose Medusa.

Not only was Medusa beautiful, but her tall, elegant figure matched Morpheus's aesthetic perfectly. He had no regrets about passing on Artoria for Medusa.

"Greetings, everyone. I trust that upon your arrival, Alaya has already informed you of the truth."

"From now on, we are comrades. What say you all?"

Morpheus looked at the eight summoned Heroic Spirits with a warm smile.
