The night of the gala arrived. I wore a emerald silk gown with a neckline that was elegant instead of being seductive; the back was bare except for a single gold chain. It made me look powerful.
"Rysa?" Asher called out from outside. "The car will be here in fifteen minutes."
"I know." I didn't open the door. "I'll meet you downstairs."
I heard him walk away, only then I opened the door.
The car drive to the venue was silent. Asher sat on the opposite side of the backseat, staring out the window.
My phone buzzed. It was a text from Lily.
Enjoy at gala. You got this.
I smiled.
Thank you.
I put my phone away and looked up to find Asher watching me.
"Who was that?" He asked.
"How does that matter to you?"
"Everything about you matters to me."
I looked away.
"It was Lily from work."
He seemed like he wanted to say something but stayed quiet. The car stopped at the venue. Cameras were already flashing at the entrance.
Time for the performance once again.
