Chapter 64 - CHAPTER 64

c64: The Arrival of Beerus

In the Universe

Flying at several times the speed of light under Whis's shimmering staff, the multicolored streak of divine energy cut across galaxies like a comet. Ordinarily it would have taken far more than ten minutes to reach the Sacred World of the Kai, but Whis's technique of instant transit compressed the distance, bringing them to their destination almost instantly.

On the Sacred World of the Kai, under the anxious and helpless eyes of the Old Supreme Kai and Shin, the younger Supreme Kai, the two figures finally appeared.

"Boom… boom…"

A sphere of nine-colored light descended from the sky like a meteor, shaking the divine plains. It landed on a vast plateau not far from where the Kais were standing. The aura pulsed for a moment, then the light peeled away, revealing the tall, calm figure of Whis and the purple-furred, sharp-eyed God of Destruction, Beerus.

Seeing Beerus and Whis arrive, the Old Supreme Kai's expression hardened. He immediately grabbed Shin's arm and dragged him forward at a brisk pace.

Before Shin could even react, he was practically hauled across the grass. "A-Ancestor, slow down! Why are you so nervous? When Majin Buu appeared you weren't like this"

"What do you know?" the Old Kai snapped, smacking Shin on the forehead with a quick thump. "Majin Buu is a mere child's toy compared to him! Beerus isn't just any god. He's the one who sealed me in the Z Sword do you understand now? The reason I was trapped in that blade for fifteen generations was because of this guy's temper!"

"What!?"

Shin's eyes went wide, his jaw dropping as he stared at Beerus in the distance. His heart began to pound violently in his chest. The being who could casually seal the Old Kai an act even Majin Buu had never accomplished—was standing only a few feet away. No wonder his elder was so terrified.

Thinking of this, Shin's knees almost buckled. He had thought Beerus's fearsome reputation was exaggerated, but the realization that Beerus had personally sealed the Old Kai silenced any doubts.

"D-Do you think he'll… seal me too?" Shin whispered under his breath, trembling.

"DX…" The Old Kai exhaled, rubbing his temples. "You're hopeless. I'm afraid of Beerus because of his temper but you? What exactly are you afraid of? You're acting like a mortal child!"

"I just… I just don't want to die so early!" Shin squeaked.

"I don't even know what to do with you anymore!" the Old Kai growled. "You've been Supreme Kai for how long now and you still don't even understand the connection between our kind and the Gods of Destruction? You haven't read anything, have you?"

Shin flushed crimson and looked down. "I… I meant to…"

"Forget it." The Old Kai tugged sharply on his ear. "Listen carefully, because I'm only going to say this once. The Supreme Kai is the God of Creation, and the God of Destruction is its counterpart. The universe only survives because these two forces balance one another. That means Beerus and I are linked. If one of us dies, the other dies as well."

Shin's eyes went round. "So… that means"

"That means your life is tied to his now," the Old Kai finished grimly. "I'm nearing the end of my lifespan. You're the contemporary Supreme Kai. That means your life is directly connected to Lord Beerus. If anything happens to him…" He let the words hang ominously.

Shin's face went pale as a ghost. "S-So if he destroys himself in a fight… I"

"Yes. You'll vanish along with him," the Old Kai confirmed, his voice as heavy as a tombstone. "That's why you'd better pray Beerus stays in a good mood today. The fate of your life and Earth itself depends on it."

After listening to the old Supreme Kai's explanation, Shin (the current Supreme Kai) was left speechless. He had never imagined that his very life force was tied directly to that of Lord Beerus, the fearsome God of Destruction. The realization that if Beerus died, he too would perish, left him frozen for several seconds. Then, as though a heavy burden had lifted from his mind, he exhaled in relief.

"Huh… so that's it! Then I guess I don't have to be afraid anymore!" Shin said, smiling awkwardly.

"Idiot!"

The Old Kai immediately jumped up and smacked Shin square on the head with his cane. "Do you really think that just because he can't kill you, you're safe? Don't be stupid! Beerus has countless ways to punish someone without ending their life! When I angered him over something trivial eons ago, he didn't destroy me he sealed me inside the Z Sword for fifteen generations!"

As the Old Kai spoke, the memory returned vividly. Back in the divine ages, a foolish argument between him and Beerus over the quality of some divine creation had ended with Beerus losing patience. Since killing a Supreme Kai would disrupt the cosmic balance, Beerus simply sealed the elder within the ancient Z Sword.

The result?

He remained trapped for millions of years, watching the universe change without him. The "young" Supreme Kai of that era had turned into the Old Kai of legend his hair gray, his patience thin, and his trauma toward Beerus eternal.

Beerus was indeed a vindictive god. He might not kill, but he could find countless ways to make a being's life miserable ways that made death seem merciful.

"Being sealed inside that sword was torture!" the Old Kai grumbled, shaking his head. "No divine food, no celestial TV, not even the joy of watching mortal entertainment! It was worse than hell itself!"

Meanwhile, after landing in the Sacred World of the Kai, Beerus yawned lazily and stretched, taking in the scenery with a disappointed glance.

"Whis, are you sure this is really the Supreme Kai Realm? It looks so barren! No temples, no palaces just rocks and grass. What kind of divine world is this?"

Whis chuckled softly. "Oh, have you forgotten, Lord Beerus? You were the one who destroyed the original Supreme Kai Palace during that argument with the elder over who deserved the last pudding cup. You completely erased the structure from existence. I suppose no one's rebuilt it since then."

Beerus blinked, then scratched the back of his head with a sheepish grin. "Oh? Is that so? Hmph, must've slipped my mind. Anyway, forget about the palace—let's find that old fossil. I need to ask him about this Super Saiyan God I saw in my dream. If he doesn't know, we'll head straight for Earth."

"As you wish, Lord Beerus," Whis replied, smiling knowingly.

Moments later, the Old Supreme Kai appeared, dragging Shin by the arm, both looking pale and nervous. Shin's robes fluttered behind him as he stumbled to keep up, while the elder's face was twisted with both worry and resignation.

Seeing their flustered expressions, Beerus smirked. He couldn't help but remember the satisfaction he'd felt when he sealed that annoying old Kai inside the sword ages ago. The thought made him chuckle.

"Relax, old man," Beerus said, waving his hand casually. "I'm not here to cause trouble. Don't look at me like I'm going to destroy your planet."

The Old Kai froze mid-step. Every word he'd planned to say caught in his throat.

"B"

Before he could get a word out, Beerus turned toward Shin and looked him over carefully. "So, you're the new Supreme Kai, huh? You look young. You do know who I am, right?"

Shin nearly jumped to attention. "O-Of course, Lord Beerus! How could I not know who you are?!"

Beerus stepped closer, his golden eyes narrowing. Shin tensed up instinctively, his palms sweating. But instead of unleashing his power, Beerus smiled faintly, resting a clawed hand on Shin's shoulder.

"Good. You've got better manners than that cranky old coot," Beerus said with a teasing grin, jerking his thumb toward the Old Kai. "You might actually be suited for your job. Keep it up, I'm quite optimistic about you."

Whis chuckled quietly behind him, hiding his amusement with his staff. The Old Kai, meanwhile, could only sigh and mutter under his breath, "Optimistic, my foot… he just doesn't want to admit he forgot who we are again."
