Chapter 6 - I'm off to work. See you in the south

Yukong heard the immense commotion and instinctively turned her head.

Then, she witnessed a shocking scene.

With a single arrow from Leon, all the Borisin from before had vanished without a trace!

As if they had simply evaporated from the world!

Yukong stood frozen, a storm of shock raging in her heart.

The Borisin, after all, were not so easy to kill.

Not only did they possess powerful self-healing abilities, but they also had Lunar-Frenzy as a trump card to empower them!

The combination of the two.

Even for elite Cloud Knights in formation, killing a number of Borisin equivalent to three fleets was by no means as easy as one might imagine!

With such immense power.

If he were truly a soldier of the Fanghu, his name would have long since echoed across the sea of stars, just like the High-Cloud Quintet!

He couldn't possibly be an unknown, a nobody she had never even heard of!

Who exactly was he?

The power of The Hunt could not be faked.

But the strange thing was, if he wasn't from the Fanghu, why would he deliberately pretend to be?

Was it a simple show of a united front, or did he have ulterior motives?

"Cough, cough!"

A few coughs brought her back to her senses.

Yukong had been lost in thought and hadn't paid attention to what her hands were doing.

She hadn't even noticed in time that Caiyi had choked on the Crimson Spring water she'd carelessly given her too much of.

"Yukong... did you come for me..."

Caiyi groggily opened her eyes, murmuring softly.

"The Reignbow Arbiter's... arrows... truly spare... no one..."

Her mind had not yet fully recovered. Seeing the familiar contours of her friend's face,

she thought the Aeon of The Hunt had unleashed its power and that her dear friend had not escaped, but had been caught in the blast.

"No, Caiyi, I'm not dead, and neither are you."

Yukong shook her head. "Help has arrived. A soldier from the Fanghu brought us medical supplies. You'll be able to see Qingni again!"

"Take care now. It's best if you stay put for a while. This war will be over soon."

Leon slung the bowstring diagonally across his shoulder once more.

"Off I go. Time to get to work."

With the longbow on his back, he raised a hand in farewell.

After all, for someone walking the Path of The Hunt, wasn't working for Lan a form of 'getting to work'?

"See you in the south. No time to reply to each of you, see you in the south."

With that, Leon strode away.

He came like a shadow and left without a trace.

Yukong's lips parted, just about to ask his name, but he had already vanished.

She was a step too late. Looking at the footprints left on the ground, she gazed in the direction he had gone and thought to herself.

That's north, not south.

...

...

The Fanghu, location of the Sky-Peering Mirror.

"This is the final moment. There's still time to leave."

So said the man with a carved wooden arm in place of his severed left hand.

"I am indeed not as strong as you, but defending the Sky-Peering Mirror is still no problem."

The current Divination Master of the Xianzhou Yuque, Jingtian, spoke to the woman beside him as he manipulated the Sky-Peering Mirror.

"The Arbiter-Generals of the Reignbow Arbiter have no cowards among them."

The general of the Xianzhou Yaoqing, the longbow-wielding Yueyu, repelled an attacking Denizen of Abundance with an arrow and replied calmly.

"Speaking of which, have you chosen your successor?"

Jingtian chuckled, deciding to make some small talk before death arrived.

Hearing this question, a sharp, smiling face immediately appeared in Yueyu's mind.

She was a monster, just like her.

"Born for battle, to die in battle."

But at the same time, she was her beloved disciple.

She had taught her martial arts, watching with her own eyes as she grew from a slave who could only flee into the capable Qingqiu Guard she was today.

'Time flies so fast.'

Yueyu thought to herself.

She always felt as if not much time had passed.

But in the blink of an eye...

Feixiao had already grown enough to take her place.

"She's been chosen."

Yueyu chuckled, shaking her head to dispel the distracting thoughts, and answered his question.

"That disciple of yours named Feixiao?" Jingtian asked.

"Yes."

Yueyu's eyes held a reminiscent look. "What about you? I remember you chose your successor long ago as well."

"What's the use of choosing?" Jingtian said helplessly.

"My disciple is unwilling to take the position. It's all just empty talk."

He said this, but there was no hint of blame in his words.

"Who was it that couldn't keep their mouth shut and told her?"

Yueyu knew about this Divination Master's disciple.

How could an ordinary person possibly accept the idea of killing their master?

If Feixiao learned that the prerequisite for becoming the Arbiter-General was her own master's death, she would surely be just as unwilling.

"When a master and disciple discuss the Path, there shouldn't be so many unspeakable things."

Although their relationship fractured afterward, Jingtian did not regret his choice at the time.

"I hear your disciple is now the Divination Master on the Luofu?"

"Yes, the student has already surpassed the master."

On this topic, Jingtian felt a small swell of pride. "I'll have you know, it was her idea to request aid from the Reignbow Arbiter this time."

"Bold, isn't she? I taught her myself!"

A smile hung on Jingtian's face; it seemed he was truly proud of her.

"How much time is left?"

Yueyu also smiled lightly, asking when the miracle—bought with the lives of countless fallen soldiers—would arrive.

"Three seconds."

Jingtian announced the countdown to death. "Any last words?"

Three.

"Last words..."

Yueyu murmured, thinking seriously.

Two.

"Then let's make a wish upon a shooting star."

In her final moments, if there was one thing Yueyu was still concerned about, it was undoubtedly her disciple's fate.

A Foxian afflicted with Lunar-Frenzy would inevitably become an enemy of the Xianzhou in the end.

She was, and so was Feixiao.

To sacrifice herself for the survival of the Xianzhou was the best possible ending for her.

Just like being Mara-struck.

If she didn't die on the battlefield, she would have to trouble her former comrades to do the deed.

No one could cure the side effects of Lunar-Frenzy.

This was something Feixiao would have to face in the future, an unavoidable fate.

"May she walk a smooth path, may suffering never befall her."

Yueyu only hoped that such a thing would never happen.

To be treated as an abomination, to have her heart pierced by the newly empowered Hunt...

That would be too painful for her.

One!

The Sky-Peering Mirror erupted in a dazzling light!

Immediately after, a searing heat wave surged forth, like a branding iron searing the skin!

The two knew this was proof of the Reignbow Arbiter's descent.

But strangely, the heat wave appeared for only a moment before instantly retracting, as if nothing had happened at all.

Bang—!

Just as the two were feeling bewildered, the Ketu-Mirage hanging high above their heads suddenly burst apart!

Miniscule bits of rotten flesh, fine as knitted threads, scattered all over the ground!

Startled, Yueyu instinctively looked at Jingtian, wanting to ask something, only to find him looking back at her in surprise. They stared at each other, nonplussed.

What happened?

They both read the same question on each other's faces.

"Did you..."

Yueyu paused, then asked uncertainly, "really summon the Reignbow Arbiter?"

"Don't doubt my abilities as a Divination Master, alright?"

Jingtian told her not to be ridiculous. "You must have felt that heat wave just now. That majesty cannot be faked. The Reignbow Arbiter did arrive."

"Then what about now?"

"It has left."

Jingtian said with a straight face.
